Hard
punk at WOW Hall.
BY
VANESSA SALVIA
On Thursday, April 10, get ready for a powerful
blast of rock and roll as Rocket From The Crypt invades the
WOW Hall. Along with The Spits and The Bronx, this punk
rock show will rock your socks off as only RFTC can.

Rocket
From The Crypt mellows out before playing WOW Hall, Thursday,
April 10. |
As soon as the six-piece, two horn RFTC takes
the stage, the musicians command attention, from their slick matching
outfits to their choreographed moves. It's never been said that RFTC
doesn't have energy and stage presence. Vagrant Records has just released
the band's latest CD, Live From Camp X-Ray. Live is
in fact, not live, but comprises10 songs executed in only 26 minutes
that will permanently sear into your brain.
From the opening strains of "I'm Not Invisible"
to the final notes of "Too Many Balls," the CD is awash in powerful,
raw sexuality and bombast. "Bring Us Bullets" and "Bucket of Piss"
rock as hard as anything RFTC's done in the past. This CD proves to
all naysayers that they are still vigorous, pompous as ever, and not
sacrificing substance for style after more than 10 years together
as a band.
Attention, Zony Mash fans! Luna will host Seattle
duo Guitar Monks Saturday, April 12. Timothy Young, guitarist
for Zony Mash, and Andrei Otraskin became friends in 1994 while Young
was attending Cornish College of the Arts. Their professional collaboration
grew out of this friendship and they have been playing music together
ever since.
Young has performed with many jazz masters
outside of his work with Zony Mash, including Julian Preister, Michael
White, Bill Frissell, Sam Rivers and Stan Getz. Otraskin, from Russia,
has recorded in his native country and toured the U.S. with his band,
The Jungle.
The acoustic duo took five years to produce
Songs For Oblivion. Young and Otraskin say the creative process
cannot be rushed, and they seek to imbue their music with a deeper
meaning — "music as a creation of Spirit and a language for
all people." Their philosophy is "global village guitar music," which
desires to unify many different musical ideas, including ragtime,
Brazilian "choro," classical, jazz and minimalism.
This assessment by Guitar Player magazine
reveals the complexity of their intent, "The pieces often suggest
a meeting of three worlds: the classically informed jazz of Bill Evans,
the crunchy harmonies and virile rhythms of early-20th-century Russian
composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev, and the open-ended virtuosity
of such Brazilian nylon-stringers as the late Raphael Rabello." Acoustic
guitar fans, fingerstyle fans, or those who just want to experience
guitar music a whole new way should enjoy this show
