A truly extraordinary rap group, The Coup, led by Boots Riley (son of a Black Panther party lawyer) and Pam the Funkstress, practices extreme political "raptivism" in a fundraiser for the Willamette Valley Folk Festival 2003 at the EMU ballroom. This group is known for both groovy hard-hitting lyrics grown from feelings of oppression (hear their song "5 million ways to kill a C.E.O.") and a soulful style that bridges gaps between rap aficionados and those less keen on the hip-hop scene. See Wednesday.

Chef's Night Out 2003, a benefit for FOOD for Lane County, features numerous varieties of victuals at the Hult Center. Parade through bistro tables, munch on sweets and savories, sample libations in the martini lounge and even win a door prize to the tango melodies of Mood Area 52. See Tuesday Calendar.

In a night of the Finnish and unfinished, Marietta Simpson performs with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra at the Hult's Silva Hall. ESO takes on Finnish composer Rautavaara's Requiem in Our Time, and Mozart's Requiem. Left incomplete at the time of his death, Requiem is Mozart's most famous work, combining choir, orchestra and soloists into a haunting farewell. See Thursday, April 10 Calendar.

Award-winning author and environmental activist Terry Tempest Williams delivers the 2003 Johnston Lecture at 4:30 pm, Thursday, April 10 at Beall Hall. Williams, author of the critically acclaimed Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place, as well as six other titles, will present the free lecture, "Memoirs of an Environmentalist with a Pen: How Writing Intersects with the Politics of Place." Williams twice has testified before the U.S. Congress regarding women's health and environmental links associated with cancer. On March 5, she joined Sam Hamill and William Merwin in delivering 13,000 anti-war poems to Congress. On March 8, Williams was among hordes of celebrities, including writers, activists, musicians and journalists, to be arrested for marching in a peace rally from a public park in Washington, D.C. to the White House.

"Can I tell you what that felt like," wrote Williams to a friend, "to watch Alice Walker, Maxine Hong Kingston, Susan Griffin … handcuffed, photographed like criminals against a white sheet taped to the paddy wagon and taken away? … Our citation is for 'Stationary demonstration in front of The White House (restricted).' A direct quote.'" See Thursday, April 10 Calendar.

The artwork of David Joyce, best known for his mural of flying people at the Eugene airport, is featured in David Joyce: A Retrospective, an exhibit at Maude Kerns Art Center through May 16. An opening reception at 6 pm April 16 highlights Joyce's work, from life-size free-standing photographic cutouts to smaller wall-mounted pieces to large mosaics created from hundreds of separate, tiny images. Here's a detail of Joyce's Man Wearing A Hat. See Friday Calendar and Art in the Galleries.
