.Circus Act
Rambunctious dollies, Spiv comin' to town.
BY VANESSA SALVIA

dolly ranchers perform at Sam Bond's Garage on Thursday.

On Thursday, March 27 Sam Bond's will welcome back to town the popular dolly ranchers. Hailing from northern New Mexico, the four gals humbly known as "the dollies" have given alternative country music a swift kick in the pants. Though the history of the dolly ranchers goes back only as far as 1998, guitarist Marisa Anderson and vocalist/harmonica player Sarah Jane Moody met on the road almost 15 years ago. The two women continued traveling together, performing along the way. Their band auntflo came about in the mid-'90s as the ladies began taking their music a bit more seriously. auntflo found a home base in Santa Fe, N.M., where Anderson and Moody met up with bassist Maria Fabulosa and vocalist Amy Bertucci. Now calling themselves the dolly ranchers, they took up recording and touring in earnest and have wowed audiences ever since.

The band released their debut, Ten O'clock Bird, to critical acclaim in 2000. Their brand new CD, Escape Artist, is the girls' second recording, released on their own independent label Chaos Kitchen Music. Not only do they have the musical chops to deliver a high quality performance, the four sharpened their stage presence as circus performances in the One Railroad Circus. That's right, they were all circus performers! This zest for performance gives their stage show a little extra zing, in a giggly, Hee Haw kinda way. The band thrives on adventure and spontaneity, and they bring to their performances a wanderlust that enhances their already rambunctious stage presence.

The four sometimes struggle with mistaken impressions, namely that as women playing acoustic instruments they should be well-behaved and soft spoken. When audiences see four women get up on a stage with acoustic guitars and harmonicas and they expect a sound that is soft, emotional, and folksy, the ladies just rip into their songs that much harder, surprising folks right out of their chairs. Lyrics from the song "Too Drunk To Go Home" are just a sampling of some of the raucous thoughts the girls have on their minds: "I'm too drunk to go home, too sober to stay, I'd like to be here — if you'd go away." It's a little bit country, a little bit
bluegrass and a lot of attitude. The dolly ranchers will be joined by Super XX
Man
.

Spiv is coming to town. Never heard of Spiv? Heard of Ken Stringfellow? Heard of the Posies? Big Star? R.E.M.? Of course you have. That's why you'll want to catch Spiv's Friday, March 21 show at John Henry's. Spiv's brand new CD, Don'tcha Know, was produced, engineered and mixed by Stringfellow, a creative force behind all of those bands mentioned above. Stringfellow also performed bass, keys, backing vocals and percussion on the CD.

Olympia, Wash.-based label Pop Sweat-shop released Don'tcha Know, which has only been available since Feb. 25. The CD flies by quickly, at only 37 minutes, but it's loaded with punchy guitars, tight power pop rhythms and more than a touch of arena rock bombast. Song titles like "Everybody's a Rock Star Tonight" and "VIPs of the Street" hint at the flippant humor Barber exposes in his songwriting. Much of Barber's cocksure attitude seems a throwback to the age of glam rock, and the music, while not glammy, does have a feeling of being larger than life.

Spiv, whose name, by the way, is British slang for "one who uses their wits to avoid a real job" is really the brainchild of vocalist and guitarist Chris Barber. Barber wrote all of the songs, enlisted Stringfellow's help to record them, then created a band to tour behind his masterpiece. In addition to Stringfellow and Barber, Don'tcha Know also includes Sean Sippel on drums and saxophone, Toad "Too Tuff" Tobin on drums, and Dehja Clayton providing backing vocals.
