Duo returns to WOW, Boogie Chillin' turns to Bourbon.
BY VANESSA SALVIA

Many of you will fondly remember the name Boogie Chillin'. That perennial favorite of Eugene's blues and dance-lovin' community played together four or five nights a week during their three-year reign, but, alas, they broke up about three years ago. Now, a new band shall rise like the phoenix from Boogie Chillin's ashes and take my vote for one of the best band names I've heard in years.

Bourbon Renewal will perform Saturday at Mac's at the old Vet's Club. Bourban Renewal and former Boogie Chillin' drummer Tony Figoli also plays with local brass band Wheel of Meat. Other Boogie Chillin' members Matt Brothers, guitar, and Matt Sonnenfelt, vocals, remain in the new band. New to the group is Dave Clark, local music scene veteran, who is well known for his experience with The Danged, Los Mex Pistols, and Joshua James and the Runaway Trains.

Sonnenfelt says, "It is three parts Boogie Chillin' but bringing Dave in, who's never played blues really, gives it a more raw sound, which is what we want to do, rather than just being a typical blues band."

If dancin' all night to Boogie Chillin' was your thing, Bourbon Renewal will satisfy that itch. The group already has enough material to play the whole night through, not just one short set.

Bourbon Renewal materialized as an idea about a year ago, but quickly faltered, because in Sonnenfelt's words, "Everyone else was busy with other projects, you know, we all had so much going on, that it just fell away." As time went on, however, Sonnenfelt realized Bourbon Renewal was something to be revisited.

"I was at a garage sale and somebody was like, 'Hey, aren't you in that Boogie Chillin' band?' People liked us a lot and thought we should still be playing. After awhile, it definitely made me miss it. We all mutually decided that we would be missing out to not do what we could with it."

When I first spoke with Sonnenfelt three weeks ago he explained that recording was not a priority for the band because of the cost and time commitment. That all changed after a recent trip to Portland.

"We've got a buddy in Portland who has a great old home, an empty home with wood floors and everything." The guys decided it would be a perfect place to record and plan to begin that endeavor soon.

Power duo Quasi is at WOW Hall on Wednesday.

The WOW Hall will welcome Quasi to Eugene on Wednesday. Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes, the power duo behind the magic, maintain a busy schedule outside of their work with Quasi. Weiss commands the drumkit for the wildly popular indie-punk band Sleater-Kinney. Coomes recently released a new CD, his first solo effort, Blues Goblins, on Portland's Off Records.

Blues Goblins consists of Coomes' twisted retakes on classic mid-20th century blues tunes, such as those by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Skip James, among others. As part of Quasi, he and Weiss have developed a sound their current label Touch and Go describes as having "dark, bleak and beaten lyrics that veer into some nasty territory, surrounded by some of the best keyboard-driven pop you've ever wrapped your ears around."

Still reeling from the success of their last Touch and Go label release, The Sword of God, the two are preparing to record a second CD for that label and their sixth as a duo. They hope to release it later this year.

Meanwhile, they are developing new material and plan to play the Austin SXSW music conference in March.
