Texas Jazz
A Topaz for Valentine's.
BY VANESSA SALVIA

One of many wonderful entertainment choices you have for your Valentine's Day date this Friday is The Wailers and Topaz at the McDonald Theatre. Of course you'll go to this show to enjoy the Wailers, one of the most renowned and respected reggae bands ever, but go early enough to catch the opening act, Topaz.

Topaz opens for The Wailers at the McDonald on Friday.

Austin-born saxophonist Topaz McGarrigle founded the band Topaz in 1998, and since then it has been gaining fans everywhere, with its mix of Afrobeat, dub, funk and improvised jazz.

The band first began as a collective and now counts among its members some of NYC's finest. Tenor saxophonist McGarrigle, proudly sporting a Texas-style 10-gallon hat, is right up front, along with guitarist Mark Tewarson, winner of the 2001 John Lennon Songwriting Competition. Keyboardist Borahm Lee and Steph Roberson, formerly of DJ Logic's Project Logic, keep the rhythm section charged. Bassist Stu Brooks is active in the NYC band Actual Proof.

Topaz has three CDs so far with two on Velour Records, 2000's Listen, and The Zone, released in 2001. For live shows, the group likes to see its fans dancing and doesn't mind playing far into the night to accommodate them.

"Dancing is the essence of jazz," says McGarrigle. "It brings us to an almost tribal level, where people are interacting with the music instead of just sitting and listening. It recalls jazz's history, when jazz was dance music."

Topaz has toured across the country several times, opening for bands as diverse as Widespread Panic, Karl Denson, Galactic and Sound Tribe Sector 9. On the current tour, Topaz headlines some gigs and joins the Wailers on 18 other dates.

Crooked Fingers will appear Sunday at Sam Bond's. The third full-length from Crooked Fingers, Red Devil Dawn, is the second CD to be released by Merge Records. Never heard of Crooked Fingers? Maybe you've heard of Eric Bachmann, also known as the singer for Chapel Hill, N. Carolina indie rock scene leaders Archers of Loaf. Bachmann formed Crooked Fingers in early 2000 as he emerged from the breakup of Archers.

Bachmann's solo stuff is likely to surprise Archers fans who haven't heard this music before. His approach with CF is much more subdued, but his innate talents as a musician make this new stuff enjoyable, even if it's not what you expect. He offers up somber, introspective songs about the hardships of life rather than weird and noisy pop. His gritty voice draws you into his world — poetic and meloncholy, akin to that of Tom Waits.

Bachmann followed his self-titled debut with 2001's Bring on the Snakes and an EP, a collection of covers entitled Reservoir Songs, in 2002. Red Devil Dawn finds Bachmann becoming ever more comfortable in his new role. The songs on Dawn are drawn more fully, featuring horn and string arrangements.

All of the songs are a little (OK, a lot) warped in their view, such as "Carrion Doves," which contains the lines, "The water is warm, and though we cannot swim, let's wade out past the breaking waves to finish what's begun." There are some actual upbeat songs on the CD, too, like "You Through a Spark," although the lyrics remain on the dark side.

Bachmann produced and arranged Dawn, and was joined by upright bassist Jo Jameson, mandolinist and lap steel guitarist Robert Lloyd Martin, drummer Brian Giblet, violinist Andrej Curty, cellist Viktor Uzur, and trumpeters Randy Anderson and Roger Ruzow. If you enjoy Archers of Loaf, Crooked Fingers will lead you to discover another, more reflective side of Bachmann. If Bachmann is new to you, this show will reward you with impressive songwriting skills and honest delivery.
