Meaningful Nights
EW turns 21, Flynn, Ship release new work.
BY VANESSA SALVIA

Its Thursday night. Whatayagonnado? Veg out on the couch? How about a night of real fun! Eugene Weekly is finally old enough to drink, and were throwing a party! The WOW Hall is the place to be Thursday night for an evening of free entertainment celebrating EWs 21 years in the community.

Two local bands will provide music: the spicy ensemble Caliente and trip-hoppers Raging Family. Caliente whips the band and the crowd into a salsa-dancing frenzy. The band has performed all over our corner of the country and really knows how to satisfy. Calientes treat bag includes rhythms from South America and the Caribbean.

Brothers Eden and Freeman Corbin of Raging Family blend expert turntablism, hip-hop beats and rhymes with live instrumentation. Theyll be joined by vocalist Emma Powell and Genus Pro.

Ashleigh Flynn joins Abandon Ship in a dual CD-release party Friday at Sam Bonds.

Local businesses Track Town Pizza and Sweet Life Patisserie will donate food. All proceeds of the evening will go to Womenspace. The cake is free; pizza slices can be had with a $2 donation; a $10 donation gets you a commemorative pint glass with all-you-can-drink New Belgium beer and a $6 donation gets you the brand new Eugene Weekly compilation CD, Eclectic Eugene, which features 21 excellent local bands. The CD draws from our wealth of local talent and offers an impressive array of music, from the Eugene Concert Choir to Floater, from Papas Soul Kitchen to Pellet Gun.

The Whats Happening, as you old-timers know the paper, has changed its name and its look over the decades, but one thing that hasnt changed is its commitment to the community. Youre invited to look back on the past 21 years and look forward to 21 more!

On Friday, Sam Bonds will host the CD release parties of both Ashleigh Flynn and Abandon Ship. The three brothers from Abandon Ship, Gabriel (guitar), Damien (bass) and Nathen Lester (drums) have been gigging for about a year and have now produced their debut CD, Abandon Ship. The 13 songs are all original and though they are in a rock vein they defy categorization.

Nathen says they draw influences from many of their favorite bands, such as the Beatles, Radiohead, the Pixies, the Smith, but make the final product unique. We have something different going on. I dont think you can listen to it and go, These guys are a Beatles rip off.

Because all three brothers sing, a big part of their music is three-part harmony. The threesome share songwriting duties and trade off instruments occasionally. The brothers are prolific songwriters and though their debut CD is hot off the presses, they have plans to record a six-song EP in a couple weeks. Thats going to be called Happy Ending. And we have all the songs written for our second record, which were going to record this summer.

The band will be cutting back on its intensive playing schedule in coming months so catch them while you can!

Former Eugene resident Ashleigh Flynn began recording tunes for her second CD before she relocated to Portland in 1999. What has been three years in the making is now finalized as Chokecherry. With this new CD, I decided I wanted to experiment with different sounds, styles and get to know the studio better, says Flynn. Characterized by snappy pop, southern roots, and soulful laments soaring over a swath of percussive acoustics, the 10 tracks on Chokecherry feel more like stories than songs. Theres a lot of characters in here. Theres issues of loss, and love and just being inspired by other peoples stories.

Having grown up in Kentucky, the specter of slavery was something that haunted Flynn. She says the title cut, Chokecherry, was inspired by an image in a Toni Morrison book. In Beloved, the main character is a slave who feels she must kill her baby to prevent her from experiencing the hellish life on a plantation. The mother is whipped and the scars form a tree-like pattern on her back, which she believes is a cherry tree.

Leila Chieko provides some drums and bass throughout the CD. Brian West also contributes drums. Former Eugenean Chris Funk contributes guitar. Carminha Pirahna, member Lara Michelle, joins in on piano and vocals. Asher Fulero of Surrounded by Ninjas provides keyboards. Surrounded by Ninjas will perform some songs with Flynn and will open the show.
