Arlo Guthrie's career exploded in 1967 with the release of Alice's Restaurant, whose title song premiere at the Newport Folk Festival helped foster a new commitment among the '60s generation to social consciousness and activism. He plays at the McDonald Theatre. See Friday Calendar.


LITERARY ARTS
What if everybody read the same book at the same time? Readin' in the Rain 2003, "When it's Raining it's Siporin" community reading project focuses on Alan Siporin's Fire's Edge, a literary look at skinheads and the people they prey upon. Local libraries, schools, bookstores and community groups will feature readings, discussions, concerts, art exhibits and lectures dealing with the theme "A Community Addressing Hate" through Feb. 28. CONFERENCE
The 2003 Against Patriarchy Conference takes place Jan. 24 to Jan. 26 at locations throughout the UO. The conference strives to "eliminate male privilege, domination and sexism by creating dialogue, educating ourselves, and inspiring action."
