THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

PASS OUT KINGS
If you've always wondered what it'd be like to go to a punk-rock show, try Pass Out Kings, a collection of die-hard punk-rockers who live up to their names. Whether it be quartering rice paper spring rolls and hoovering Mai-Tais in an upscale bar, or wallowing mightily in dive-condition joints while sucking down Pabst Blue Ribbons, these fellows, lead by Reed Gilchrist, push the upper limits of the voice-a-scale, set the ceiling on how powerful lungs can lengthily bellow. Saturday, Wetlands. —BF

DON LATARSKI TRIO
A nationally recognized blues guitarist, the author of many lesson plans and books and reviewed by the national Blues Review when he puts out an album, Latarski's easily at the highest echelon of Eugene's guitar talent We're lucky to have such a blues star playing most weekends. Friday and Saturday, Oregon Electric Station.BF

GAMELAN SARI PANDHAWA
This Eugene-based ensemble specializes in the music of central Java, which they play on authentic bronze and wood instruments made especially for them in Surakarta, Indonesia. Their primary teacher is the gracious and illustrious Widiyanto, who is also the music director for the gamelan at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. Saturday, Cafe Paradiso.BF

TOM HEINL
In Heinl's music one finds an unmatched sloshing of country, western, folk and comedy; unique performances full of unabashed chutzpa; deliveries of musical skill and flawless panache. He drawls the rumor of the good and the bad, the happy and the sad, but always from a positive and humorous outlook; a percolation of life's mysteries into brilliant and highly entertaining stage-born ham-bones. Playing with the uncompromisingly raw and therefore authentic Portland indie-rockers, Thong. See me there. Saturday, Sam Bond's Garage. * BF

ANNEX CAGE DANCE
After scrolling through dozens and dozens of cage dance pictures posted on the annex Website, and after getting tapped on my shoulder by co-workers who embarrassed me and forced me into making a decision, I chose this image. It's one of the tamer ones, and woe unto us if we were not to include an event where so many people seem to be having a good perky time. Rumor has it there's some sort of prize one gets for winning at cage-dancing at this, one of Eugene's newest dance spots. Tight jeans and Abercrombie logos abound; tank, tube and halter-tops as well. DJ-spun music pumps in a dark room, and attitude rebounds from the walls, looking for an escape route. If you're into this kind of thing, don't think, just grab your pager and cell phone and baseball cap and get the hell over there. Friday, Annex.BF

Sound Ideas
Musical ways to spend Christmas gift money.
BY VANESSA SALVIA

Goldenboy
Blue Swan Orchestra, B-Girl Records, 2002.

Goldenboy has delivered an impressive debut with Blue Swan Orchestra. Debut CDs can be shaky, revealing artists who are unsure of their motivation and direction or who rushed to get something recorded. Not this time. Fronted by Shon Sullivan, former Spain member and collaborator with Elliott Smith and Neil Finn, Goldenboy creates beautiful pop songs that emerge from its matrix fully realized and well-formed.

Sullivan, the primary songwriter and vocalist who also plays guitar, piano, electric keys and bass, sings with a soft huskiness that makes the songs melt into your ears. Elliott Smith adds backing vocals on "Summertime," a song that evokes the fullness of summers in memory. Drummer Bryan Bos's drum beats are soft and non-intrusive, giving just the right propulsion to these soothing songs. Bassist and electric guitarist David McConnell sings on "Kittens of Lust" and "Almost Perfect" * just guitar, voice and chamberlin for the first half, then drums and bass enter to rock the song softly to sleep. A short bonus track with a snappy rhythm that suffers only because it isn't a completely finished song caps off a wonderful CD.

ASYLUM STREET SPANKERS

Asylum Street Spankers
My Favorite Record, Bloodshot Records, 2002.

One great thing about Asylum Street Spankers is the fun the musicians are obviously having with these songs. ASS offers a mish-mash of retro styles and vocalists that share singing duties so their CDs have a variety-show feel.

This Llano, Texas band came to fruition at a party in 1994, when members Guy Forsythe, Christina Marrs and Wammo expressed a desire to play 1930s jazz and blues songs. They quickly realized three wasn't enough and now sometimes appear with up to 12 members on stage.

My Favorite Record is the band's 8th release of music that's all over the map * '20s and '30s jazz, swing, waltz and blues * combined with whip-smart lyrics. The band members are unabashed promoters of an herb-friendly lifestyle, and their lyrics reflect this attitude as well as a care-free attitude about sex. Vocalist Christina Marrs can be innocent or seductive, but always playful. She also plays a mean saw; yes, she coaxes amazing sounds from a musical saw. In concert, ASS plays completely without amplification, but it electrifies audiences just the same. As you can tell from the name, the primary ingredient is a subversive humor and a joy of playing that comes across on every one of the recordings.

The The
Compilation Disc, Epic/Legacy, 2002.

Matt Johnson, the Londoner genius behind The The, has over the years proved himself to be a surprisingly versatile artist. He has continually pushed the boundaries of danceable pop, infusing his music with a brooding despair and undercurrent of weirdness. In a joint venture between Johnson's label and Epic, The The's first four Epic LPs have been restored and re-released on CD. You can now find Soul Mining, Infected, Mind Bomb, and Dusk on CD, along with 45 RPM: The Singles of The The.

The extensive CD booklets contain complete lyrics, the LPs' original cover art and rare photos. Mind Bomb, released in 1989, features the unique contributions of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr on all but one song and a guest vocal by Sinead O'Connor.

Loscil
Submers, Kranky Records, 2002.

Locsil is Vancouver, B.C.-based musician Scott Morgan. This is Loscil's second release, recorded at Morgan's home on computer with samples and keyboards. All of the CD's tracks are named after submarines and the final track, "Kursk," is an elegy for the ill-fated crew of that Russian nuclear submarine that became disabled, killing all aboard.

Each track on the CD is murmuring and hypnotic, causing the focus to constantly shift like so many ocean waves. Even the moniker Morgan has chosen reflects the droning nature of his music * Loscil is short for "looping oscillator." Morgan's ambient electronica is ominous and slightly claustrophobic, which fits very well with the concept of Submers.
