THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:
 |

THE
DANGED
Why'd they have to steal my caption?
The Danged might be one of the hardest working rock 'n' roll
crews in the area, playing many gigs in most of the Eugene barrios.
Lead singer and guitarist John Pankl is known to take every
iota of energy the crowd's willing to give, and some they're
not, and transform it into a hurricane of action: creeping
around the floor on his back, leaping from table to table, sliding
down the bannister, back-flips off the speakers, karate-kicks
into the video-poker machines ... Saturday, Good Times.

LOGIC,
THE AFTER-GLOW SHOW
Logic performs at the After Glow Show.
Sponsored by Ground Work Movement, the UO's first hip-hop organization,
After Glow is a new breed of event, featuring not only some
of the Northwest's best hip-hop artists, poetry, urban street
and break dancing (with the Raw Action Break Crew), freestyle
and "turn tableism", but also check this out: All the various
performances are put together into a socially conscious story-line.
Thursday, Mac's at the Vet's Club. —BF

PELLET
GUN
Describing Pellet Gun: Delayed feedback,
sonic sculpture, bouncing bass, electric trains, tasty drumming,
convenience stores, angry beautiful ocean guitar, dead cats,
glorious tumble-down little girls, cloud-rending feedback, fuck-off
'this-is-the-way-it-is' sentimentality, jumping bill-capped
guitarists, stunning drunken harmony, blood, bones, alcohol,
skin, jangle strings, hung-over mornings and fallen down angry
night remembrances. Friday, John Henry's. - BF

SHELLY
JAMES MUSICBOX
Shelly James has a sound big enough
to entertain at the McDonald, so one could expect Luna to be
filled to the brim with her musical verve. A fan of all types
of music, her sound is difficult to classify, but nevertheless
she's got a devoted following of dance-loving concert-goers.
Musicbox is Tom Teutsch on lead guitar, Rich Sellars on drums,
Owen Wright on keyboards, Cal Coleman on bass and Shelley James
on her slippery signature vocals. Saturday, Luna. -

Parrotheads
and Proletarians
Two
unique CD releases to stop your shopping.
BY
VANESSA SALVIA
Greetings everyone! We are firmly in the
grip of the holiday season and hopefully everyone's not feeling too
stressed. If you haven't brushed up on your relaxation techniques
recently and this time of year leaves you with rising blood pressure
as well as rising debt, allow me to suggest the popular pastime of
live music. Nothing slaps down stress like live entertainment. Guaranteed.
Tell stress to take a holiday! Enjoy these weekend entertainment options.
OK, so this first option is not live music, but it
will get you out of the house and into that "monsterific spirit of
the horror-days." On Friday, the WOW Hall continues its film series
Monsterama! with a special showing of Santa Claus Conquers
the Martians! In addition to little green men, the film boasts
robots and an 8-year-old Pia Zadora among its cast. The second fine
feature film shown will be the simply-titled Santa Claus. In
this south-of-the-border classic Santa trounces none other than ...
The Devil! Is there anything Santa Claus can't do? Vintage holiday
cartoons and baby boomer toy commercials will also be played before
and after each feature, making this a fun-filled evening of high quality
family entertainment. Doors open at 7:30 pm.
Maybe a little "Caribbean Christmas" is what you need
to get you in the spirit. Visit Quacker's Last Stop on 7th Street
in
Eugene for a tropical-themed party that will be a lot easier on your
wallet than a plane
ticket to Barbados. Eugene band The Cheeseburgers will be the
musical entertainment that evening, unveiling a brand new CD for the
first time. No Bad Days is a smooth-flowing CD of original
material designed to make you feel good and dance away your troubles
in the "parrothead" tradition of tunes about "boats, bars and beaches."
Drummer and vocalist Clark Lynch, bassist Troy Nichols,
guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist John Powell, and guitarist and
vocalist Dave "Bubba" Thomas have been together going on two years,
playing primarily Jimmy Buffet covers. I can't give you song titles
(they weren't written in on the burned copy I received), but a song
about seeing the sun come up is a funny take on watching that golden
orb appear in the sky after a long night of drinking. Another extolls
the virtues of an across-the-border holiday: a Mexican breakfast,
bloody marys, sangria, siestas and dinner at 5. Tropical attire encouraged
for this holiday event, which will take your attitude to a southern
latitude.
If neither one of these events quite stuffs your stocking
then head to Tsunami Books Sunday for Richard Crandell's CD
release party. Crandell, a Eugene-based acoustic guitarist, will release
One on One. The 16-song, 57-minute CD was composed entirely
by Crandell, and some tracks, such as "The Proletarian Shuffle," have
been heard on local radio stations. Crandell is a talented guitarist
and composer who imbues his songs with distinct moods, from lively
("The Juggler") to patient and reflective ("Liam's Lullaby"). The
compositions are all instrumental, so instead of lyrics inside the
CD cover we get tidbits describing inspirations for the piece and
even details on the technical aspects of the songs, like tuning techniques,
whether or not he used a device known as a capo, and in what key the
songs are played.
Crandell tells us that the title of one of his songs,
"Be Good Or Be Gone," is a sign that hangs over the bar in New York
City's oldest pub, McSorely's. We also learn that "The Proletarian
Shuffle" took life when Crandell watched people in Bonn, Germany struggling
with the "drudgery" of work. It's not all toil and trouble, however,
as he tells us "the bridge ... has to do with rewards: good food,
love, family, friends, fishing, books, community, creativity, swimming,
and so forth. Then back to work." This CD release concert is an afternoon
event, beginning at 3 pm.
