THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

PRODD
When our photo-guy was listing photos and told us "I've got Prodd," we all took one step back. But in seriousness folks, Prodd's been headlining shows since they opened for Floater in October at the McDonald. Another all-ages event, little AND big chitluns can enjoy this powerhouse of hard rock. Headbanging with Sik 9 and Conception. Friday, WOW Hall.BF

JACKASS WILLIE CD RELEASE
Get out your fake buck-teeth and put on your overalls, Jackass Willie's throwin' a CD release. This ain't "Cajun porch" and it ain't "jug-band," but rather a special breed of music some call "punk grass," and it's fun as hell. Talented harmonizing vocals, demon-speed plucking and a sound akin to that of sweet band Split Lip Rayfield, this is a great show to go party at. Friday, Sam Bond's Garage.BF

WEST COAST RHYTHM KINGS
People get up and dance to this Eugene jump-swing outfit. They also get down. The lead singer tends to come down during his set and toe out some mean tap. Sometimes others join in, sometimes not; sometimes it becomes a competition, two dancers accelerating a rhythm. This event's all-ages in a big hall. A slice of the Eugene swing dance community is sure to be there, and a swing lesson's at 7 pm. Sunday, Agate Hall.BF

GEOFFREY MAYS CD RELEASE
Another CD release, this one downtown, Mr. Mays displays acoustic and electric guitar viruosity as appears on his new album, Journeys Within and Afar, also featuring Don Latarski (guitar), Mark Schneider (bass), Jason Palmer (drums and percussion), Ila Kriegh (vocals) and Ricky Sweum (saxaphone). Four of those five will show up at Paradiso to join Mays in this celebration, a festivity that toasts his new album that was inspired by Mays' travels in western Europe with his duo The Muse. Friday, Cafe Paradiso

Nocturnal Notes
Canyon's cry and Guthrie's influence on Ellis Paul.
BY VANESSA SALVIA

The five-piece known as Canyon will appear Friday at Sam Bond's. The band's second CD, Empty Rooms, was released on Gern Blandsten Records out of New Jersey. Bassist Evan Berodt, drummer Dave Bryson, and guitarist Joe Winkle are joined by two other expert musicians who each play a variety of instruments. Vocalist Brandon Butler also contributes guitar, lap steel and harmonica. Derry de Borgia pitches in with Fender Rhodes, organ and accordion.

ELLIS PAUL PLAYS CAFé PARADISO ON SATURDAY.

Canyon formed in 1999 to give life to the songwriting efforts of Butler and Winkle. All five call Washington, D.C. home, although some of the members migrated there from the Missouri side of Kansas City.

One reviewer says, "fusing the desperado harmonies of the Jayhawks with the... abrasion of Radiohead, Canyon makes music that lives up to song titles such as 'Magnetic Moon,' 'Sleepwalker' and 'Lights of Town.' It's nocturnal and panoramic."

Truly, the Radiohead resemblance is lost on me, but comparison to Minnesota's great Jayhawks is hard to deny, especially on the great "Other Shore," in which guest vocalist Claire Packer adds the perfect touch of balancing female harmony. Butler's pedal steel is haunting, floating above the music of "Sleepwalker" like a chorus of doves. The songs begin slow and sparse, then build up to psychedelic crescendoes, loosening the melody then bringing it back just in time to save it from falling apart.

"Lights of Town" is a gut-wrenching tale of a woman who left behind a broken-hearted lover as she wed someone else she didn't love. As the title suggests, the songs on Empty Rooms do have a wistful quality, but it's tempered by some feeling of hopefulness, even if you have to listen real close to find it. This show will also be a CD release party for Portland band Jack Ass Willie.

Saturday, Dec. 14th finds Ellis Paul in town, appearing at Café Paradiso in support of his newest release, The Speed of Trees. No longer an "emerging" artist, Ellis Paul has found his voice and "settled in," accepting national renown and packing concert halls wherever he goes. This 35-year-old Bostonian has been the recipient of 12 Boston Music Awards and his songs were featured on the soundtrack to the Farrelly Brothers' films Me, Myself and Irene and Shallow Hal.

It's been four years since his last studio recording, 1998's Translucent Soul, recorded for his supportive label, Rounder/Philo Records. Since then, Paul's gotten used to the fame, busily playing concerts all over the nation and developing an extremely devoted fan base.

The Speed of Trees, produced by Duke Levine, guitarist for Mary Chapin Carpenter, is quieter than many of his past works. The 12 songs on Trees unfold as short stories, with Paul allowing plenty of time for the listener to delve into the tale. His songwriting skills are well honed. Take these lines from "Sweet Mistakes:" "It's a long ride, I can't tell you why/ But there's a place in your pocket where peace can abide./You pull it out, it's a compass, a guide/ And it will put a little soul on you."

Paul felt enough of a kinship with songwriting icon Woody Guthrie that he bears a tattooed portrait of Guthrie on his arm. Paul says the tattoo reminds him "to write honestly, to write songs that reflect reality, to show people the hard side of life but also the softer side."

Guthrie's daughter Nora Guthrie is a friend and fan of Paul's, and invited him to look through Woody's archive of unpublished songs. He found there a lyric for a song called "God's Promise" that had been separated from the music Guthrie penned for it many years ago. Paul took the words and set them to music, with the blessing of Nora Guthrie and The Woody Guthrie Archives. Trees also features guest vocalists Lucy Kaplansky and Jennifer Kimball.

Top-notch Tunes
Good Times gets funky; Russell on jazz.
BY GLENN SHIRES

Northwest funk favorite Porterhouse returns to Eugene Saturday to reveal its newest incarnation at Good Times. The Portland-based band, which previously performed as an instrumental group, recently added 23-year-old vocalist Olivia Warfield — to profound effect. Her phenomenal voice electrifies the listener with all the soul and moxie of a young Aretha Franklin.

Hailing from Illinois, Warfield grew up admiring singers such as Etta James, Tony Braxton and Whitney Houston. All of those influences shine through in her vocal technique, although it should be noted that her compelling hooks and sophisticated lyricism beget a style all her own. Her graceful melodies lend a warm R&B ingredient to Porterhouse's sagacious funk recipe.

Porterhouse's most recent release, Prime Cuts, was recorded prior to the addition of Warfield. Some of the album's cuts are still included in the band's live set. These songs combine elements of various danceable genres, bridging the gap between old school funk, soul, R&B, Latin music, jazz-funk fusion, and Morris Day and the Time-styled '80s funk.

"Prime Cuts is a departure from the neo-retro jazz-funk of our last album," bandleader and keyboardist Joey Porter says. "We are now exploring what it means to play funk and find it in several genres."

Porter, formerly of Rubberneck and Five Fingers Of Funk (and also a former UO student), takes pride in composing songs that harken back to the days of AM radio funk hits.

PORTERHOUSE PLAYS GOOD TIMES ON SATURDAY.

"I think we listen to the best funk, and we model our music after that," he explains in an interview with online 'zine Cosmik Debris. "I was born in '72, and that's when all the stuff I like, the Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder, all that stuff, happened. So we model our music after the right funk instead of, like, Red Hot Chili Peppers, which a lot of new bands are more like."

Also on Saturday, jazz pianist Gus Russell will perform at Lavelle's Tasting Room in the Fifth Street Public Market. Russell tends to play classic jazz tunes interspersed with a few original compositions. He covers the gamut, ranging from Cole Porter and George Gershwin to Miles Davis and "the more accessible Coltrane," with plenty of improvisational moments and enjoyable segues between songs.

With 25 years of experience playing music, Russell has had plenty of time to witness the cyclical nature of the local jazz scene. Fortunately for jazz aficionados, the jazz scene in Eugene is currently more vibrant than it's been for the past 10 years. With numerous local clubs offering live jazz, a fan can find something to check out almost any night of the week.

Russell says that local jazz fans range in age from "just out of college to retirement," although, overall, "it's a much younger crowd than it was 10 years ago. Most people are in their late 20s to mid-40s."

"Jazz audiences are more of a listening crowd," he says. "In my age group, people don't necessarily want to go out dancing every night. They like to be able to sit and talk, to relax and drink wine while they enjoy the music and the ambience."

Like many of his peers, Russell performs solo several times a week. He also plays with the swing outfit West Coast Rhythm Kings, as well as with various other blues, R&B, Latin and jazz combos.

When not performing, Russell remains busy as the co-owner of a recording studio, Project One Audio. In his role as producer, he has composed and recorded music for educational videos and CD-ROMs, for independent films, and even for the Dolby Stereo promos that are shown in movie theaters. (If you've seen the Dolby ads with the Greek or Egyptian-looking temples, you've heard his music.)

As a professional musician, Russell has paid his dues on the Northwest circuit. "I used to do the 'I-5 shuffle' all the time, hitting Ashland and Seattle and points in between," he says. "But as I'm focusing more on jazz and the studio, I'm trying to get out of traveling as much as possible."
