PELLETGUN
CD RELEASE PARTY
Pelletgun finishes off their west o' the Mississippi
tour at the Downtown Lounge. Eugene's premier indie-noise-pop
band has been on tour with Mine Thirty Seven, who will also
be on the bill, along with Wet Confetti from PDX. This is a
CD release party for P-gun's new album recorded up at Jackpot
records of Elliott Smith fame. I wouldn't miss it if you threatened
to shoot me in the booty with a ... Sunday, Downtown Lounge.

SICK
OF IT ALL
It's punk rock! Sick's touring their new album,
Live in a Dive, the latest in a series of live recordings
being issued by San Francisco-based Fat Wreck Chords. Their
new tunes draw from every part of their discography, from lyrics
of alienation, channeled rage and the emotional release they
display in their live performances. Playing their anti--lullaby
with Blood for Blood, Most Precious Blood and 18 Fatal Strikes.
Wednesday, WOW Hall. —BF

CASEY
NEIL
Casey brings acoustic guitar
playing and singing, straightforward folk, Celtic tunes, Celtic-inspired
rock, and near-punk acoustic rave-ups to Sam Bond's. Some of
Neil's music celebrates the beauty and strength of nature and
those who fight and risk their lives to protect it against those
who would destroy it. Playing with the Riffbrokers and Peter
Wilde. Friday, Sam Bond's Garage. —BF

THE
DANGED
Local rock 'n' roll Messiahs
perform in this unofficial bonus addition to the Eugene Celebration
at the ressurected Good Times. Two Bucks Short, Itchy-Itchy
and the Courtesy Clerks share the bill in a full evening of
hard-hitting ram-a-jam-bam. Their album, The Highway to Heck,
displays their self-heralded "swamp rawk 'n' roll, sexy, souped
up rockabilly." Saturday, Good Times. —BF

Costello's
Wednesday show features rocking new tunes.
BY
VANESSA SALVIA
The only thing cruel about Elvis Costello's
new CD, When I Was Cruel, is making us fans wait so long for
it. We haven't seen an album of original Costello material since 1996's
All This Useless Beauty (and those songs were originally penned
for other artists).
 |
| ELVIS
COSTELLO PLAYS MCDONALD THEATRE ON WEDNESDAY. |
Since that time he has done just as he pleased, leaving
some fans in the lurch with his decidedly non-rocking collaborations
with Burt Bacharach on 1998's Painted From Memory and last
year's pairing with opera singer Anne Sofie Von Otter on For The
Stars.
The 15 original songs on Cruel are a return
to his more astute and electric songwriting. At 47, Costello's voice
is still as rich and passionate as ever, no matter what he's singing;
the spit polish of the fiery "Tear Off Your Own Head (It's A Doll
Revolution)" or the subtle crooning of the seven-minute title track.
He gives us the gamut of emotions and musical style:
the thorny, guitar-driven angst of "Daddy Can I Turn This?;" the rhythmic
mood and a wink from a naughty girl on "Spooky Girlfriend;" and a
horn-punctuated, taunting, smooth "Episode Of Blonde." The title track
is buoyant but mysterious.
As one reviewer from CMJ Magazine said, "To
be this wise and wicked is a dangerous thing." Costello himself declared
on his official website, "After singing so many ballads in the last
few years, it was time for a rowdy rhythm record."
This CD was produced by four individuals identified
as The Imposter: Elvis himself, Ciaran Cahill, Leo Pearson and Kieran
Lynch. Costello drafted two fellow Attractions to join him in the
studio and on tour for this CD — Steve Nieve plays keyboards
and Pete Thomas kicks in on drums. The addition of Cracker's bassist
Davey Faragher instead of Attractions bassist Bruce Thomas was a bit
of a surprise. The horn section consists of Ku-umba, Frank Lacy and
Roy Nathanson.
Costello was UCLA's artist-in-residence until just
recently. He also performed the kick-off concert of the season with
the Charles Mingus Orchestra, and he wrote lyrics for six Mingus compositions.
One of them, "Invisible Lady," was recorded for an upcoming C.M.O.
release.
Costello also wrote a full orchestral score, called
Il Sogno‚ to accompany an adaptation of A Midsummer
Night's Dream that will be performed at UCLA by the Italian dance
company Aterballeto. The London Symphony Orchestra will perform that
score, in London, and the Deutsche Grammophon label will record it
for future release.
Oct. 1 is the release date for Cruel Smile,
a collection of b-sides, re-mixes, rarities, and live versions of
songs from When I Was Cruel, hand-picked by Costello. One last
thing, Elvis Costello and the Attractions have, for the first time,
been nominated for inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Costello is a vital, stunning performer and I wouldn't want to miss
this concert in the intimacy of the McDonald Theatre. Opening Wednesday's
show will be Phantom Planet.
Other events: Cafe Paradiso will host singer/songwriter
Michael Cochram's CD release party Friday. Goldenboy
will appear at Downtown Lounge Tuesday. Goldenboy Shon Sullivan recorded
with Spain on their latest, I Believe, and toured with Elliott
Smith. Tuesday's WOW Hall show, Trance Zen Dance, will bridge
fire dancing, performance art, spoken word, and dance beats. Tuvan
throat singer Ai-churek of the group Chirgilchin will
also appear.

Colorado
Bluegrass
Plus
hip-hop, punk at WOW Hall.
BY
GLENN SHIRES
In a week so saturated with musical events,
there should be plenty of options for people of all tastes. Anyone
disposed toward bluegrass music won't want to miss the McCloskey
Brothers Band at Samurai Duck on Thursday, the 19th. Backed by
a sturdy rhythm section, brothers David (banjo) and Todd (mandolin)
McCloskey trade nimble riffs and harmonize with precision. Both have
studied their instruments at assorted prestigious colleges and now
teach music at Colorado universities.

THE
MCCLOSKEY BROTHERS PLAY THE SAMURAI DUCK ON THURSDAY.
|
The Colorado-based quartet combines rootsy, traditional
bluegrass with shades of classic rock and jazz. As evidenced by the
15 cuts on their self-titled CD, the band plays with an infectious
fervor that should appeal to just about anyone looking for a good
time before the Eugene Celebration begins.
The WOW Hall plays host to two musical extravaganzas
in conjunction with the Eugene Celebration this weekend. Admission
is free with a Eugene Celebration pin. On Friday, local hip-hop acts
Ten Thousand Fold Form, Plan B, Nelec, Mist,
Ethic, DJ Caden, Qmulus, Sideffectsinclude,
Conscientious Objectors, DNLT, Hanif and Fury
will rock the hall before headliners the Lifesavas take control
of the room.
Hip-hop concerts in Eugene have a reputation for drawing
massive crowds. Hanif Panni, one of Friday's MCs, has booked local
hip-hop shows since 1999. He says that hip-hop fans have multiplied
in number each year.
"The general public has become more accepting of hip-hop
culture," he says. "You see it in commercials and all kinds of movies.
At the same time, live hip-hop is still very new to a lot of people
in Eugene. It's good to have this show during the Eugene Celebration.
I think we'll draw lots of people who are wondering what's up with
the local scene."
Panni adds that it's an "almost guaranteed" packed
house. "It's a great opportunity for the local performers to express
themselves, because most of them have never performed in front of
a big crowd," he says.
Friday's hip-hop show will be followed by a breakdancing
contest on Saturday. The action happens on Olive St. between Broadway
and 10th. Anybody who wants to perform should sign up by 2:30 pm.
The contest begins at 3 pm.
Local punk bands Blasphemous Abnormality, Capgun
Suicide, Miami Airlines, Bastard Saints, Monkee
Torture, EPD, Thunderslut, The Hellenbacks
and Blue Collar Threat will play WOW Hall on Saturday afternoon.
This concert coincides with the release of Bloodstains Across Eugene,
a compilation CD produced by fledgling label Little Willy Records.
Most of the bands playing the show contributed music to the CD, which
features 30 songs by 15 groups.
"I wanted to help some of Eugene's newer bands gain
some recognition," says Devin Duerst, bassist for the Bastard Saints
and mastermind behind Little Willy Records. "Most people won't go
see a punk show unless they know the bands that are playing. So, I
figured if people like what they hear on this CD, they will be more
likely to support the bands next time they play live."
Bloodstains offers a fine view of what Eugene
has to offer in the vast realm of punk rock. The CD encompasses a
great deal of musical territory, ranging from the three-chord sing-alongs
of the Bastard Saints to the precise, technical compositions of EPD;
the treacherous howls of The Murdaholics to the smiley-faced pop sounds
of Miami Airlines; the warp-speed rockabilly of the Sawyer Family
to the metallic thrash of Blasphemous Abnormality.
One hundred copies of the CD will be given away for
free at the WOW Hall on Saturday. The rest will be sold by Duerst
and the bands at future shows.
Duerst says he hasn't given much thought to the record
label's future. He hopes to re-issue out-of-print albums by acclaimed
bands such as Artless Motives and The Snukas. (Both groups attained
large local followings before breaking up in 1996 and 2001, respectively.)
In addition, he's already working on a follow-up to the compilation.
"Six or seven bands got left off the CD because there
wasn't enough room on the disc," he says. "If I find a few more bands
that are willing to record, Bloodstains Across Eugene Volume II
could be out by next year."
