THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

HONEYBUCKIT
Ho ho! It's Kevin Murphy's (leathered, and who used to have thicker dreads than Bushman) last show. We must all look within, and the front man for this bluegrass/banjo/mandolin/acoustic bass/drums band looked to find ... photography. So off to click pics in California he goes. Hope to catch their last show together, and hope Kevin catches some good waves. Friday, Sam Bond's Garage. --BF

BUSHMAN
When I get home tonight I'm going to ask my wife if from now on she'll call me "Bushman." I like the sound of that. Bush is one of "the great younger singers to come out of Jamaica in the late 1990s. With a singing style compared to Luciano, Bushman linked up with legendary producer Lloyd "King Jammys" James to release two albums, most recently Total Commitment." Jah, Rastafari! Wednesday, WOW Hall. --BF

CAMBALACHE
Currently jamming with a grand total of 11 members, one of the northwest's best salsa bands is going to make your skin jiggle and make your hips wiggle. Who better to lead this hot, hot group other than the authentically named Pancho Chavez, hailing from Lima, Peru? Now if they can't salsa in Lima where can they? Answer: Eugene.Caliente! Friday, Rumba Room. --BF

TONY FIGOLI
Yes, this once inspiring tympani and lead maraca player for the Pistols is helping refill the Vet's Club with music. In a harmonious matching with Skip Jones, the formed duo stages a New Orleans extravaganza that even experienced Eugene club-goers are thinking twice about. Just what they're thinking is up to debate, but I assure you they're thinking something. Will the drinks be stiff? Will the stools be padded? Who can say? What we do know is that Figoli and Jones's blues will be basically benevolent and somewhat boss. Saturday, Mac's at the Vet's Club. --BF

Lizards and Gypsies
Bring us some Kafka.
BY BRETT CAMPBELL

LO'JO PLAYS WOW HALL ON MONDAY.

OK, let's try this again. Last year about this time, I told you all about one of my favorite bands, the

Austin Lounge Lizards, who were scheduled to slither into the Eugene Celebration. One of the smartest, funniest, politically and socially satirical bands on the planet, their sharp humor, reflected in song titles and lyrics such as "Get A Haircut, Dad," "Jesus Loves Me (But He Can't Stand You)," and "Highway Café of the Damned" (Sartre's No Exit set in a diner -- "Waitress, waitress, bring me some Kafka ..."), shouldn't obscure the fact that they're darn good musicians with solid grounding in bluegrass and country. I mean real country, not NashVegas slickery, as their paens to George Jones and Hank Williams as well as pans of pretenders, such as "Put the Oak Ridge Boys in the Slammer" attest.

Then came Sept. 11, and the resultant chaos prevented the band from making it up to Eugene to escape the late-summer Austin swelter. They're again booked for this year's Celebration; maybe the Lizards will get to meet the Slug Queen. Any band that can come up with songs that somehow juxtapose stock car racer Richard Petty with avant garde filmmaker Luis Buñuel, or a manic bluegrass version of Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage" ("The lunatic is on the grass/doink doink d-doink doink doink --) and can draw guffaws and applause from old-fashioned shitkickers as well as hippies should find wide appeal here.

This summer's big musical disappointment was the cancellation of the annual Womad USA festival held outside Seattle. One of the highlights of last year's Womad was the French gypsy troubador troupe Lo'Jo, a collective that can include more than a dozen musicians, dancers, and other performers. Born amid the French street performance scene, Lo'Jo joined up with a street theater ensemble (sort of like the Velvet Underground's relationship with Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable) that included filmmakers, poets, visual artists, DJs, even circus acrobats and fireaters. The tribe has toured Europe and beyond for more than almost two decades, absorbing influences and instruments from Arabic, Roma, African, Spanish and other world music traditions, somehow integrating all these streams into the old French chanson and cabaret traditions.

On Monday, Sept. 16, Lo'Jo brings its danceable Eurofusion music to the WOW Hall. With its ever-evolving lineup, a Lo'Jo show can be hard to predict, but it might include swirling dancers, various North and West African and other percussion (djembe, darbouka, balafon and more). Musical constants include guitar and accordion, Richard Borreau's fiddles, and the thoughtful, evocative lyrics (in French) and fedora of singer Denis Péan. Personally, I favor their more Eastern European gypsy and Moroccan-influenced numbers, especially those featuring Nadia and Yamina El Mourid's lustrous vocals, but any fan of world music and dance should find plenty to enjoy in this vibrant example of European cultural melange. This will be one of the finest world music shows of the year.

If you crave another French-flavored entrée, try Hot Club Sandwich at Sam Bond's Sept. 18. This Washington-based string band channels the hot jazz epitomized by the violin and guitar-based gypsy swing of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt's renowned Quintet of the Hot Club of France, but adds various other influences, including vocals and original songs.

Back when he was typecast as one of the angry young men of the late '70s punk/ new wave movements, who would have guessed that Elvis Costello would evolve into one of the most varied and interesting singer songwriters of the age? Always capable of powerful, singable hooks (even back in the "Alison," "Pump it Up," "Oliver's Army" glory days), the aesthetically restless former Declan MacManus has likewise broadened his influences. He has collaborated with longtime idols Burt Bacharach and Paul McCartney, putting out a gorgeous string-laden art music concept album called The Juliet Letters with the Brodsky Quartet, and working with classical singer Anne Sophie von Otter. He even took singing lessons and managed to transform his extremely limited vocal range into an instrument capable of expressing surprising nuance. Costello's recent work has revealed a resurgent lyric and musical richness. His Sept. 25 show at the McDonald Theatre offers a chance to see one of the great pop songwriters in action.

Powerhouse & New Wave
This week features Ferrick's force and Von Steins' vigor.
BY VANESSA SALVIA

As we hear the first rhythms of Melissa Ferrick's new CD, we know she approaches her music with vigor. Her voice, message and personality immediately come across. We quickly realize she is a force to be reckoned with.

MELISSA FERRICK PLAYS WOW HALL ON FRIDAY.

Ferrick's tone throughout Listen Hard is fierce and defiant, but also self-questioning and searching. She's not afraid to bare her teeth to us and reveal her strength nor is she afraid to let us see her as being uncertain and defensive. As she questions on "Burn This Guitar," "Would you burn this guitar/ stop all the songs/ silence my voice from singing/ set my soul's desires on overdrive/ so they just disintegrate from spinning," we understand that nothing could stop this powerful voice and intent. She then tells us she's "made a huge mistake/ out here on my own/ I'm the soldier in the quicksand/and I am gasping for air."

Hailing from Boston, Ferrick won the 1998 Lilith Fair Talent Search and won several other Boston-area awards over the last three years. Listen Hard is Ferrick's first release done "in a professional recording studio" since 1995's Willing to Wait, and it's also released on her own label, Right On Records, which she launched in 2000. Longtime drummer Brian Winton joins her in this recording.

Her strength and defiance come across most clearly on "Shatter Me," when she asserts, "You may think I'm being greedy/well for once this might be the case/ but I'm a bona fide independent superhero/ and I'll tell you the truth right to your face/... I will not let you shatter me." Ferrick's approach is emotive and honest, both to herself and to the listener.

Joining Ferrick at WOW Hall this Friday will be local singer/songwriter Jasmine A.S.H.. Jasmine Amanda Smith-Howard played her first show at the Buzz Coffeehouse in April. Her debut CD, Penelope's Diary, is a confessional of the confusing emotions of young love: the ecstasy and the agony, sometimes both at once. On the song "Who's On Your Mind" she reveals to us, "I've been crawling my way through thorns and sticks and stones/ hoping you'll be on the other side/ and you've been drowning in my moans and groans and woes/ but it's not me who's on your mind." Jasmine's light and airy vocals match well with her lilting guitar work.

The Downtown Lounge will be celebrating the birthday of big man on the scene, booker and music biz jack-of-all-trades Rocco for this Saturday show featuring Elysian and The Von Steins. Word is Rocco is passing on his booking mantle at the Lounge. Elysian has evolved over the past four years from a two-piece to a four-piece and specializes in dark and brooding goth. Their ethereal computer beats enhance a shimmering soundscape of "echoing guitars, raw bass, dark voices... and audio samples," plus a beautiful viola. The overall effect on their 2001 release, The Flamingo Yard, is spooky, frequently compared to Pornography-era Cure, My Bloody Valentine, or Cocteau Twins.

A more upbeat act this night is Anaheim's The Von Steins. Proffering a self-described "Newer Wave" style of music, The Von Steins are on their first tour, 'though they are a huge hit in their original hometown of Munich and surrounding areas. The five Germans sprechen sie rock in the vein of Devo, Sprockets, and a contagious unself-conscious zaniness."

They are intent on turning the whole world on to the joys of their '80s synth-rock revival. Said one reviewer, The Von Steins take the "manic rhythms of Devo and color them with the artsy charisma of the Talking Heads and the modern pop-punk urgency of Green Day." Enjoy!
