Pellet
Gun
Having just been released from a recording
contract with Motown Records, Pellet Gun is ready to rock your
spine with their dynamic blend of sing songy lyrics, unrelenting
macho guitar and thick doses of melodic tenderness. Featuring
Brian Gardiner, David Snider, Tara Jensen and Eric Jensen, Pellet's
indie rock is influenced by Built to Spill, Big Black and Def
Leopard * but not the later Def, oh no, more like the good stuff
before the drummer had his arm chewed off in that unfortunate
aquarium accident. Friday, Samurai Duck.

TR
Kelley Birthday Bash
Everybody's turning out for TR's fourth decade
B-day bash. Among the more-than-modest musical sprinklings of
local celebrities will be Walker T Ryan, Mare Wakefield, Laura
Kemp and Jim Hershey. They all plan to share the stage in celebration
of the smiling Kelley years among us. An auction of TR memorabilia
will benefit the Greenhill Humane Society, and word of an appearance
by Elvis has been leaked. Saturday, Cafe Paradiso. |

Blue
Room Boys
When their manager was recently asked the meaning
behind the name of this group of some of San Fransisco's best
swing-jazz musicians, she said, "You know, I've been handling
them for years and I never thought to ask. Hold on and I'll call
you right back. (Insert the theme-song to Jeopardy here) When
the manager called back she recited the story, but a passing train's
horn blasted it into obscurity. A wrinkled paper, upturned on
an office desk read, "Great for jazz or swing afficionados, great
for kick-ass dancers." Saturday, Luna.

Kelly
Thibodeux
Kelly Thibodeux. "Thibodeux." To pronounce the
"x" is incorrect, but funny. Mr. Ducks plays a fiddle like you
ain't never seen nobody play it. Well, okay, maybe you've seen
some guys do it, but not many. He's faster than greased lightning
with that thing, and he looks like he done come runnin' outta'
a Bayou bog to boot. Maybe that's why they call it Cajun Swamp
Rock. Playing two nights in your neck of themarsh. Saturday,
Wild Duck and Wednesday, Sam Bond's Garage. |

JOHN BROWN'S
BODY, NORTH AMERICA'S REGGAE GODS.
|
Pit
of Doom
Three
bands on bingo, mortal combat.
BY
BEN FOGELSON
Chris Welter of John Brown's Body says being the best
white reggae band of all time is a challenging feat.
"How's it feel being the best white reggae band on
planet Earth?" I asked.
"Well, it's a challenging feat, growing, changing,
maintaining everything we got going."
"What do you think about bingo?"
"Ah," he said, "Wow. An American Institution. I don't
understand it. But to each his own."
"Ever win?"
"Well, no. That's probably my beef with it. I don't
conjure the right spirit."
"So how much ganja did you smoke today?" I asked.
"Ha ha, only a little. But it's still early …"
"If Bob Marley and Jesus Christ were in a pit of doom
and forced into mortal combat armed only with toothbrushes, who would
climb out alive?" I asked.
"I know the answer and I stand behind this 100 percent,"
Chris said, "Jesus and Bob; they'd work together, both get out of
the pit, kick whoever's ass it was that put them in it, and then go
jam together. There's no sense in violence."
"Right on," I said.
John Brown's Body plays mind-blowing reggae June 27
at the Wild Duck.
Steven Bernstein from Sex Mob said that he's
not a musical genius, but he knows which instruments get the chicks.
"Hey Steven. How's life?"
"It's great. I'm feeling lucky. You know Christian
McBride?"
 |
|
STEVEN
BERNSTEIN FROM SEX MOB.
|
"No," I said.
"He's one of the world's best bass players. He says
to me 'Steve, you've done something no-one's ever done before,
you've gotten women to come to your shows.' You know why women
come to my shows? It's because I play songs that people know."
"Right on," I said. "Are you a musical genius?"
"No," he sighed. "Absolutely not."
"Whad'ya think about bingo?" I asked.
"I love it. I love any game of skill."
"Who's badder, Herbie Hancock or Miles Davis?" I asked.
"Miles is dead."
"Oh, yeah." I said. "But who was, like, badder?"
"Well, Miles Davis was the baddest ever."
"OK. So if you threw Miles Davis and Bob Marley in
a pit of doom and forced them into mortal combat armed only with toothbrushes,
who would climb out alive?"
"Miles definitely. Marley was a weed-smoker and Miles
Davis was a coke-head. He'd just destroy Bob. By the time Bob
could say 'peace, man,' he'd be ripped in two."
"Right on. How much ganja did you smoke today?"
"Actually none today. It's just one of those days.
I took my son to see Scooby Doo and dropped him off at school.
I didn't want to show up all wasted. You can't fool the teachers."
"Have you ever had any sexual adventure that somehow
involved any of your instruments? Be honest."
Steven contemplated, re-mumbling the question quietly.
"Well … no. But I'll certainly say that my instruments have
brought me sex."
"Oh yeah?" I said.
"Yeah. There was this one time with a tuba. I left
a show with this tuba and saw a girl I'd never met. I ended up forgetting
the tuba at her house. Yeah, that was a good one, the tuba."
Sex Mob plays ground-breaking jazz June 29 at
Sam Bond's Garage.
Tom Heinl, of "Bingo with Tom and Jivan" says
that Jivan would say that bingo's all about the love.
"Your bingo night at Sam Bond's is massively popular.
What's it all about?" I asked Mr. Heinl.
"Jivan would say it's all about free bingo,"
said Tom. "It's about us giving back to the community. We could spend
a lot of money on a good bingo machine and ping-pong balls, but we're
passing the savings to the people. We're all about big prizes, free
prizes. That's our motivation. People need to understand that
Jivan and myself, we work all month long on bingo. We practice calling
numbers to get the timing down. Most people don't know that a lot
of passion goes into it."
"If we threw Jivan into a pit of doom with Steven
Bernstein and set them to mortal combat armed only with toothbrushes,
who'd climb out alive?" I asked.
"I don't want to slight Steve what's-his-name," said
Tom matter-of-factly, "but Jivan's gonna win that."
"How much Ganja did you smoke today?"
"I never smoke it," said Mr. Heinl.
Tom Heinl and cohort Jivan read bingo-numbers 'till
beer explodes from your nostrils, June 30, Sam Bond's Garage.
