THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

  ABAKADUBI
Oobey doobey, Abakadubi. Aba can play some honestly grooving reggae, but their Duck performance is being heralded as rootsy funk. Aside from practiced grooves, among DubiŠs treasures are smooth-skinned beauties and crystaline voices. Saturday, Wild Duck.

  A.F.I.
Lead vocalist Davey Havok is a man posessed, and only the Eugene punk-rock crowd dares to exorcise him. "Through our bleeding, we are one," the crowd screams as he glides through their ranks, a jungle cat in a pen of hamsters. TheyŠve played with Offspring and Rancid, and now theyŠll play with you. Hope youŠve got a ticket, Ôcause itŠs sold out. Limited door admissions. Wednesday, WOW Hall.

  Abandon Ship
Some groups get together, putt around, do a show here and there, blah blah, but AbandonŠs not some sissy sit-aside and eat-beef-jerky kind of clan. No. This melodic indie rock trioŠs playing their original hard textures and soft sometimes-three-part-harmony grooves for the 20th time since they began gigging this March. Sunday, Tiny Tavern.

  Paul Geremia
For more than 30 years, Paul Geremia has survived solely by the fruit of his musical labors. Having abandoned all other means of support in 1966, he has been traveling far and wide ever since, performing in every capacity from street singing to club and concert bookings, throughout the U.S.A., Canada and Europe. HeŠs a real bluesman. Thursday, Cafe Paradiso.

Academic festivals
University offers wide variety of academic sounds.
By Brett campbell

Spencer Bohren is at Cafe Paradiso on Saturday...
.

The primary purpose of universities is, of course, to educate their students. But since Eugene is lucky enough to host one of the nationŠs finest public music schools É at the UO É the surrounding community benefits. The end of the academic year offers a slew of attractive (and affordable, usually $5) concerts, many of which include much more contemporary, recent, or under-appreciated composers than youŠll find in many classical music concerts.

On Wednesday, May 29, the UO Campus Band and Orchestra will perform a wide-ranging program in Beall Concert Hall featuring the music of Telemann, Holst and Scarlatti as well as less familiar names such as Carter, Himes, Jager, Alvarez, and Washburn. On Thursday, May 30, five UO choirs will sing the music of Villa-Lobos, Grieg, Casals, Britten, Shutz, Tavener and folk music from South Africa and Venezuela. On Saturday, June 1, the UOŠs electronic music program, Future Music Oregon, features new media works by Barry Truax , known for his work in the World Soundscape Project and for contributions to acoustic ecology.

One of the most impressive UO shows of the season happens Sunday, June 2, when various small ensembles perform fetching chamber music. YouŠll hear works by Ginastera, Jolivet, a percussion piece by the fine contemporary American composer Christopher Rouse, Bela BartokŠs lovely †Contrasts˙ for violin, clarinet and piano, as well as flute and piano works by Messiaen and Poulenc.

On Monday, June 3, the UOŠs contemporary music group, Hundredth Monkey Ensemble, plays music of Falla, Takemitsu, and other composers, including UO students. And on Thursday, June 6, the innovative University Opera Ensemble presents scenes from operas by Mozart, Britten, and Bizet, as well music from SondheimŠs Sweeney Todd and BernsteinŠs On the Town.

ThereŠs another university up the road, and on June 1, Bella Voce, the Oregon State University WomenŠs chorus, joins Jubilate, the WomenŠs Choir of Corvallis at the First Congregational Church for an impressively ecletic program. Works include †Tunggare,˙ an aboriginal Australian piece with text meaning †to sing,˙ Gwyneth WalkerŠs †I Thank You God,˙ set to an e.e. cummings poem, works by Venezuelan composer Alberto Grau, an African-American spiritual, an English folk song set to a Yeats poem, and music arranged by Xiaomeng Christina Zhong.

One of the major reasons for the welcome prevalence of contemporary sounds on UO programs is the presence of acclaimed composer and new-music advocate Robert Kyr on the faculty. On Friday, May 24, the Portland new music ensemble Third Angle joins the Oregon Repertory Singers (for whom Kyr serves as composer in residence) for an important concert of KyrŠs works at Reed CollegeŠs Kaul Auditorium. ItŠs well worth the trip to Portland for a show that includes the major new choral work †Waging Peace,˙ with text and music by Kyr, and based on music of Hildegard von Bingen and texts from the Judaic, Islamic, and Christian tradition.

While too many composers refuse to look past their own navels, Kyr has often found inspiration in contemporary events; this new work represents his thoughtful artistic response to Sept. 11 and the recent bloodshed in Palestine. Kyr will also conduct the world premiere of his †Violin Concerto No. 3,˙ with Third AngleŠs Ron Blessinger as soloist, as well as his first Violin Concerto, †On the Nature of Love.˙ †Love˙ consists of 13 transformations on the hymn tune, †What WondŠrous Love is This,˙ from the sacred harp tradition of the American South.

Some of the best music IŠve heard at the UO has accompanied dance concerts. On Saturday, June 1, the UO Dance Department features new and recent works by choreographer Jin-Wen Yu, accompanied by music of Arvo Part, Pink Floyd, and dance department music director Christian Cherry, including the premiere of a new collaborative piece created and performed by Yu and Cherry.

Blues Week
Bohren, Motherbug offer sweet sounds.
By Vanessa Salvia

The Melvins play the Wild Duck on Saturday...
.

EugeneŠs delightfully laid-back coffee, tea and good grub establishment Cafš Paradiso (which will remain open and relatively unchanged during the mall re-opening construction) will play host for respected musician Spencer Bohren Saturday night. The Cleveland, Ohio newspaper The Plain Dealer calls him †a living repository of American Music.˙ John Lee Hooker simply says Bohren †is one of us.˙

ThatŠs high praise, but deservedly so, as soon as you hear the first cool notes washing out from BohrenŠs guitar. His new CD, Solitaire, showcases 11 songs performed solo. Artistically melding a love of deeply traditional blues tunes like Blind Willie McTellŠs †Broke Down Engine˙ and Hank WilliamsŠ †Long Gone Lonesome Blues˙ and original, autobiographical songs like †Born in a Biscayne,˙ Bohren takes the listener on a journey throughout the entire breadth of traditional American music. It doesnŠt matter whether he chooses an old National steel guitar, a vintage acoustic, a custom electric or a plaintive lapsteel; in BohrenŠs hands the instrument becomes a divining rod, guiding his hands with its own spirit and intentions.

A Wyoming native, Bohren allowed the siren song of New Orleans to seduce him, living there from 1973 to 1983 and holding regular gigs at lofty places such as TipitinaŠs. In 1997, Bohren moved back to New Orleans, where he is still based today. From gospel, pure instrumental renditions, originals or well-selected covers re-done with obvious love, each Spencer Bohren recording is a one of a kind gem, as is each of his performances. He says each show is unique just as each audience is its own entity. In each show, he shares musical history and anecdotes just as readily as he shares his great blues.

If youŠve heard of Hieroglyphics Ensemble, then you know Will Bernard. He rose to prominence with that influential group, whose first record appeared in 1990. His involvement in other experimental groups includes Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra, Beth Custer, The Coup and many others. His project with Charlie Hunter, T. J. Kirk, received a Grammy nomination in 1997. Bernard debuted as leader of his own band with 1998Šs Medicine Hat. That group, sometimes a four-piece, sometimes a five-piece, gigged for two years until finally morphing into Motherbug.

For Motherbug, Bernard reaches back into an extremely influential era in American music, all the way back to the Bay Area sound of the 1960s and Š70s. HeŠs enhanced MotherbugŠs rhythm section by adding Keith McArthur and Jan Jackson, who previously performed with Bernard under the Pothole moniker. Motherbug modernizes the Bay Area sound, adding elements of electronica, guitar jams, lounge, surf, you name it. Bernard electrifies the good elements of the sound with a †funky urban rhythmic structure˙ while avoiding the wanking that weakened it in the first place. Bassist Keith McArthur is on loan from The Coup, and keyboardist Micheal Bluestein dredges up all sorts of organic sounds, from organ to piano to Farfisa.

You canŠt exactly call Motherbug a jam band, although they do operate in those circles. Motherbug shifts focus too much to be called that É you wonŠt hear them saddle up one chord and ride it for 30 minutes until itŠs sweaty and panting. They keep things moving, fresh and communicative. BernardŠs leadership has created something totally unique: ItŠs truly a multifaceted approach that funks up the rock, rocks out the blues, jazzes the rhythm and blues. YouŠll see, Wednesday at the Wild Duck.

Other noteworthy events: Dustin DiamondŠs Circle of Freaks appears Friday at the McDonald. PapaŠs Soul Kitchen is at Sam BondŠs the same night. Fungus appears Friday at Wild Duck while Avenue of the Strongest is at Samurai Duck. Ed Cole and Friends appear at Sam BondŠs Saturday and Abakadubi performs at Wild Duck. Adema rocks the WOW Sunday. Monday Sam BondŠs welcomes the rockabilly of Cave Catt Sammy.
