THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

  Eddie Money
Mr. Money of '70s Two Tickets to Paradise fame, recently having appeared on posters as Dirt's idol in the Saturday Night Live spin-off film Joe Dirt, is currently working on theme songs for Arena Football. This creator of Walk on Water says he likes having his kids drag him through amusement park openings.
Friday, Foxfire.

  Jackstraw w/Danny Barnes
Anytime. Anytime you see Barnes' name and you've got a minute or an hour or three, you gotta go check him out. He's good solo, but especially with a band, this former Bad Livers frontman is a phenomenal guitar vocalist, and he's tall and makes funny faces. You ain't never seen a banjo played quite just so.
Saturday, Sam Bond's.

  Frank Black and the Catholics
So basically the Pixies are a legendary alternative rock group, right? And they split up and now former-member Black tours with the Catholics, having just put out the 2002 AFIM Indie Awarded "Best Rock Album of The Year." He's joined by other ex-member David Lovering, now a Scientific Phenomenalist, who opens the show like a pissed-off 'Bill Nye Science Guy.'
Monday, WOW Hall.

Jazz and Grunge
Harvey Weinapal and The Melvins land in town.
By Vanessa Salvia

The Melvins play the Wild Duck on Saturday...
.

San Franciscan saxophonist Harvey Weinapel visits Eugene Thursday, May 16. He'll perform at Sam Bond's Garage, where he'll be joined by a deadly duo of players. Portland's Alan Jones, who's played with John Abercrombie, Steve Coleman and Dave Holland, will be joining Weinapel on drums while John Wiitala (who's played with Bobby Hutcherson, James Moody, and Jessica Williams) fills the bass position.

Raised in upstate New York, Weinapel spent two years at Berklee College of Music, then toured Tunisia and spent five years living in Europe, where he performed with the German Radio Big Band. Shortly after leaving Europe, Weinapel went on a whirlwind 10-month world tour with Ray Charles and then settled in New York. Twenty years ago, Weinapel moved to San Francisco, where he's changed the tenor of Bay Area jazz.

Weinapel's music flows freely from his creative spirit; he expressively engages the soul of his music, and brings it straight out for the listener's enjoyment. There's very little show-offy about his approach, but because he communicates such zeal, he is able to pull his audience through to his own unique vision.

On 1999's The Hang, Weinapel debuts four original compositions, explores different types of Brazilian rhythms on three ardent tunes, and displays his bluesy soul on a number called "The Buzzard," which took its name and inspiration from the charter plane he and Ray Charles toured in. Also offering a few cover songs, Weinapel is able to infuse them with his own jocularity and appeal.

If jazz is not your cup of tea, perhaps grunge is, and if any of you out there even pretend to like grunge you have to know about the Melvins. Eighteen years ago, the Melvins blasted out of the same Aberdeen muck that gave life to grunge overlords Nirvana and inspired countless other Seattle-area imitators. Many followed on the path the Melvins steamrolled, but unlike other bands who co-opted their heaviness and combined it with a more radio-friendly approach, the Melvins never have broken into mainstream appreciation. They continually shun song structure, tending instead toward immensities of crushing sludge-rock, sometimes with excruciatingly pained lyrics, sometimes just ominous, formless vocal gurglings. Though they have founded a sound all their own, The Melvins themselves took much of their inspiration from sludgy, doom metal bands of the late '70s, but jettisoned the quasi-mystical or occult lyrics in favor of just plain weirdness, oftentimes purely self-indulgent.

The group has remained relatively stable since its first record came out in 1987. Remaining still are King Buzzo on guitar and vocals, and drummer Dale Crover, along with The Cows' bassist Kevin Rutmanis, who has been onboard since 1998.

The Melvins have two new recordings: a live CD with additional songs by King Buzzo's side project, Fantomas, and Hostile Ambient Takeover. It's another thick slab of free-flowing lava that proceeds at its own pace, sometimes exploding into a shower of pyroclastics.

Opening up for the Melvins this Saturday night at The Wild Duck are Dead Low Tide, featuring Mike Kunka of Enemymine and Godheadsilo on bass and vocals, Murder City Devils' Coady Willis on drums, Spencer Moody vocalizing and Nate Manny on guitars. While the sound breeds familiarity with all ex-bands the members have been involved with, DLT challenges listeners to go beyond expectations. The members pull their years of experience together to create something ferocious and wild, yet also hauntingly beautiful.

Also recommended this weekend: youthful bluesman Dylan Thomas Vance appears along with the Kitchen Syncopators Friday at Sam Bond's. Local folk heroine T.R. Kelley plays Café Paradiso Saturday. Seattle bluegrass iconoclast Danny Barnes performs, along with Jackstraw Saturday at Sam Bond's. On Saturday, The Downtown Lounge hosts Jessie Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, featuring Phil Wandscher (Whiskeytown) on guitar, bassist Bill Herzog (Citizen's Utilities, Neko Case), drummer Kevin Warner, the Walkabouts violinist Anne Marie Ruljancich and Sykes' guitar and crooning vocals.
