THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:
 |
|
Guy Davis
You read it here, you read it there. Wherever you find info on him, it says Guy
Davis is an honest-to-goodness "Bluesman." He's dedicated himself to reviving
the traditions of acoustic blues, bringing it to as many ears as possible with songs
from the great blues masters as well as his own original works. Friday, Cafe Paradiso. |
 |
|
Bill Frisell
The New York Times said "It's hard to find a more fruitful meditation
on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock
and country with jazz and blues, he's found what connects them ..." When he
straps on his axe, it's like Superman rockin' out from within Clark Kent's pajamas.
Thursday, WOW Hall. |

|
David Wilcox
Soulful, poetic and philisophical, David says "The world doesn't need another
song if it's just more notes in fashion. Music is a means to dare people to feel
more alive ... to stir up emotion and wake up hearts. Music is sacred ground for
me." Wednesday, Wild Duck. |

Thursday, May 2, prepare yourself for The White Trash Debutantes.
Since 1989, The Debs have been belting out over-the-top punk rock, worshipping all
things Ramones-ish or other suitably notable late '70s New York punk rock. At one
time fronted by Punk Rock Patty, a wild-eyed octogenarian and "Oldest Living
Punk Rocker," the group has found ways to take freakishness to unimagined heights.
The band has appeared on "The Jerry Springer Show," and at one time issued
a call for disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding to join the band. Old school punker
Ginger Coyote fronts the band now, singing about the "white trash trinity of
sex, beer and TV." The Debs have a new split compilation CD out entitled What's
It All About and future releases are planned to include a Johnny Thunders tribute
album. I can't tell you all the gory details, so you just have to find out for yourself,
at the Downtown Lounge.
Guy Davis, a bluesman and storyteller, will appear Friday
at Café Paradiso. Davis has many years of blues experience under his belt,
allowing him to pull from the full breadth of blues history. Combined with an innate
talent for telling tales, both from personal experience and otherwise, Davis can
really draw an audience into his world.
Sadly, Friday night we must say au revoir to one of Eugene's stalwart
music venues. Specializing in punk rock, John Henry's has been a favorite watering
hole for connoisseurs of punk for nearly a decade. The John Henry's staff promises
to reopen at a new downtown site in a couple months. In the meantime, pay your respects
on this, the last night of era. The lineup for this evening includes The Pass
Out Kings, Wristrockets, Jucifer, and Courtesy Clerks (all
local with the exception of Jucifer). This will be an increasingly rare chance to
see the beloved Wristrockets perform, plus there may be an unadvertised surprise
during the evening.
You know you've missed them! The Satin Love Orchestra reunites!
For the first of many more sweat-filled and feverish nights to come, check 'em out
at the Wild Duck, Friday. After a two-year hiatus, SLO members were still available
and interested in re-forming. They've added a new selection of funk and disco hits
to their already packed repertoire. All but one original member will be present on
stage, and newly added percussionist Rich Sellers and trombonist Matt Moressi increase
the group to 10.
Minneapolis's Man Planet will appear at the Downtown Lounge
Saturday, along with Alter Ego. Man Planet looks and sounds like it'll be a cool
show, although all I can tell you is it's something about Devo and Weezer in bed
together with the movie Tron and a can of Reddi-Whip. Think like Servotron
and The Causey Way with a Rush-like prog-rock groove.
At the Alamo Saturday, Mariamarkandrew will appear, a group
that comprises members of local bands Chevron and Mine Thirtyseven. Alamo Conspiracy,
Some Cheap Christ and Tapioca Tugboat will also be there. Some Cheap
Christ is relatively new on the scene, for fans of Fugazi or Christie Front Drive.
This show's at 9 pm and it's free!
Gutenberg College hosts Jim and Jennie and the Pinetops
Sunday night. For Bluegrass fans, this show will be a pleasure. Jim and Jennie's
vocal harmonics are great, and the sound is old-time bluegrass wrapped around original
tunes. If you like this music, don't forget about Sam Bond's ongoing Bluegrass Jam
every Tuesday night!
Attention children of the P.! The McDonald hosts George Clinton
along with original members of both Parliament and Funkadelic Sunday
night. An undeniable architect of funk music, Clinton masterminded the two interrelated
groups Funkadelic and Parliament. Starting with the doo-wop of his earliest group
The Parliaments (named for a pack of cigarettes and then later changed to Parliament
after the band lost rights to the name), to the funky soul of Clinton as a solo artist
today, his music has influenced millions. On the strength of his wild personality
and talent, he has ushered funk music into the 21st century. Few among us can carry
the groove as well as he can!
