THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:
  Robert Hunter
This man is an historic landmark on the road of folk, and rock and roll. He could arguably be called a national treasure, and without argument he is among the best of the modern day minstrels. He's also a poet with friends you might know (he has written lyrics for Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, Phil Lesh and so many more). And now he'll be playing at a converted movie theater (with Grateful Dead connections) near you. Check it out, you'll be in for an evening of pure poetry. Wednesday, McDonald Theater.

  Firewater
Trickeling down into Eugene from New York, Firewater has a bitter burn. Their third album is Psychopharmacology. Self-described as "... upbeat songs about ugly things," they explore dark themes with a wry and comic twist. Wednesday, WOW Hall.

  Tim Mueller
Tim Mueller opens an evening of great music with his heavy-edged folk rock. Joining him are SpiritFarm and Rob Tobias in support of a favorite local cause, KindTree's Autism Rocks! program. Sunday, Sam Bond's Garage.

Funky Monks
McDonald hosts Monks, groovy MMW.
By Brett Campbell

New York City's Madeski, Martin & Wood come to the McDonald Theatre Thursday, April 25...
.

Of all the happy developments in the resurgence of downtown performing arts (Café Paradiso's revival, Luna's arrival, the Shedd's gestation), the most exciting so far is the restoration of the McDonald Theatre as a happening live music venue, with a commendably broad range of acts. On Thursday, April 18, the Gyuto Monks of Tibet bring their harmonic chanting of ritual Buddhist prayers to the McDonald. Well known for their overtone singing (which allows individual singers to emit multiple tones, producing a deep, buzzing sound reminiscent of a didjeridoo), the monks also provide a visual and, to many, intensely spiritual experience that's best encountered live.

The following Thursday, April 25, brings a different kind of "moving" experience to the McDonald. Over the past decade, Medeski, Martin, & Wood have gone from darlings of New York's downtown avant-garde scene to jamband faves to dabbling in hip-hop/DJ rhythms -- all while joining a record label (Blue Note) famous for mainstream jazz. Some jazz purists have dismissed them as mere white-boy funk popsters -- an attitude that's condemned jazz to the cultural margins for the past few decades. I think their irresistible dance rhythms (sparked by Chris Wood's pulsating bass), constant artistic growth and wild experimentation are revolutionizing the organ trio and revitalizing jazz with new, younger audiences and hipper sounds. If you like to groove, you'll be at the Mac for this cool dance concert.

'Tis a pity Natalie MacMaster's visit on Monday to South Eugene High School in Oregon Festival of American Music's Now Hear This! Series conflicts with the Lucinda Williams show at the McDonald. That's a hard choice. Macmaster, a vivacious virtuoso of traditional Cape Breton fiddle music, continues Eugene's remarkable recent spate of phenomenal Celtic fiddling. Her vibrant renditions of jigs, reels, and strathspeys -- including her own vigorous step-dancing -- really sets these bouncy dance tunes aflame.

The Celtic winning streak continues on April 23 when the Battlefield Band invades the WOW Hall. This venerable Scots music outfit melds traditional and rock influences and includes keyboards, pipes, fiddle and welcomes the return of the great singer/guitarist Pat Kilbride.

But again, there's a conflict: That's the same night Portland's superb new music ensemble, Third Angle, brings a very special show to the UO's Beall Hall. During the Holocaust, some powerful music was created by indomitable prisoners in the Nazi concentration camp of Theresienstadt. The Nazis allowed staged performances of some of their music for a propaganda film that tried to hide the murderous truth. Though the composers (some of them students of the likes of Janacek and Schoenberg) didn't survive the genocide, some of their music has recently been rediscovered, performed and published. Third Angle will also perform music of Victor Ullmann, Gideon Klein, Pavel Haas, plus contemporary American composer Paul Schoenfield's tribute, "Sparks of Glory," narrated by Portland actress Michele Mariana.

Another UO concert offers a real change of pace when the Italian singer, percussionist, dancer, actress, and theater group director Alessandra Belloni brings her one-woman show to the Erb Memorial Union's International Lounge on April 25th. She's studied theater with Dario Fo, been in films by Fellini and Mazursky, and won awards from Lincoln Center and Drum Magazine. Using frame drums, tambourines, and singing and dancing, this passionate singer and dazzling percussionist leads a "percussive journey" through the south of Italy. She includes drumming and chants in honor of the Black Madonna, lullabyes, and a tarantella trance dance that originally sought to cure a hysteria supposedly induced by a spider bite.

There's more European traditional music on Friday, April 12th at the Mennonite Church from the Vermont-based world music vocal ensemble Northern Harmony. The group's repertoire spans the dark harmonies of sacred songs from Caucasus Georgia, as well as village songs from Bulgaria, tunes from Corsica and Sardinia, Italian medieval and other early music, and songs from the English countryside. Also featured are tunes from the American shape-note tradition, spirituals and contemporary choral settings of the poetry of Sufi mystic Rumi.

If your tastes run more to European classical music, on Thursday, April 11 at the Hult Center, the Eugene Symphony plays Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole, Kodaly's Golanta Dances, and Dvorak's Symphony No. 7.

Hunter and Williams
And Cole in concert.
By Brett Campbell

Ed Cole...
.

If you think your life lacks a motivating factor, do what Ed Cole has done. He set up a CD release show at Sam Bond's, but had no CD to release. So what did he do? He recorded a CD, which he will debut Thursday, the 11th. I was handed a tape copy still warm from the spools. Cole performs regularly with Activator and semi-regularly with Metal Detector (more on that later!). In February, Activator recorded a full length CD, but it's expected to remain on the shelf until late summer. In the meantime, Cole recorded Rainy Day Manifesto, a solo (nearly) CD of quieter material than what you would hear at an Activator show. The songs "Free Again Tonight" and "Loser Town" pick up the tempo and part the clouds.

"Soul is the Only Thing" is my personal favorite, with a voice and message reminiscent of modern day Lou Reed. Cole received help from Raenie Kane, drumming on three songs, and Eric Jensen drumming on two others. At the show, expect to see familiar faces Billy Barnett on bass, Kane on drums and Jensen on guitar. Dan Jones opens the show and Activator will finish the evening. Metal Detector, which is Cole, along with his son Cosmo on drums and Cosmo's mom Spirit on bass, will rip up the stage with funny originals and coolest covers like the Ramones as part of Sam Bond's "Parents who Rock" concert series, begun last year.

Varnaline tours Samurai Duck Friday, backing up a new disc called Songs in a Northern Key. The band's fourth release solidifies Anders Parker's once-emerging voice.

Songs is its own breed, and Parker imbues it with an honest intimacy and a raw intensity. You'll find yourself at times swimming through dense melodies but after repeated listening you'll be rewarded by surprising warmth. Appearing with Varnaline are friends and mutual fans Centro-Matic. The Denton, Texas band formed in 1995 and released its sixth full-length CD last year, Distance and Clime. Distance is a satisfying, homey, southern feeling CD that also rocks out and knows how to party.

The Dizzy Elmer, Danged, Switchblade Hearts and Sawyer Family show would be a great one to attend Saturday at John Henry's. An evening of hot psychobilly and rockabilly and the all-out manic energy John Pankl brings to the Danged sounds too good to miss!

The McDonald has two big names lined up for this week. First, on Monday, Lucinda Williams. What can I say except she's awesome! Everything she does is great, from the big, open songs that remind me so much of the South where I grew up, to the quiet, heartfelt songs about love, family and how nothing stays the way you want it to. Anne McCue, an Australian who has been compared to an earthy Sheryl Crow, will support Williams.

On Wednesday, the McDonald hosts Robert Hunter, the ubiquitous lyricist for the Grateful Dead's most recognizable songs ("Truckin'," "Ripple," "Box of Rain," and many, many more). He has also informed the music of Dylan, Starship, and Zero, but you already knew that, right? This show will be Hunter as the traveling troubadour, performing a solo set showcasing his poetic lyricism.

That same night, at the WOW Hall, whet yer whistle with Firewater. The band's third release, Psychopharmacology, continues the tradition of creating music "with more humor and beauty," as said by bassist and vocalist Tod A (presumably he means more humor and beauty than that found in his previous band, Cop Shoot Cop). Sample lyric from "Woke Up Down:" Fail me, jail me, feed me into your system/You look a lot like aliens/But you're acting just like animals in a movie/(And this ain't a movie). "Bad, Bad World" is a duet featuring Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields.
