THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:

The Itals
The Itals have done the reggae from the get go, coming up with many a
great Jamaican hit, such as Herbs Pirate. In that song they sing of years past. "My
caretaker could not afford for I to get an education, so I turn to do some cultivation,
but them pirate, them take 'way all that I cultivate ... Oh yes, me rule me machete."
Not the kind of folks you want to pinch ganja from. Roots. Thursday,
WOW Hall. |

Norma Fraser
When Bob Marley was building up his trenchtown repertoire, Fraser was
there. Before many of the greats signed reggae labels, Norma had already wet her
pen. She's got irie rasta blood flowing through her veins, and she knows how to lay
down some sick, fat, happy irie rasta lyrics. Big Jamaican night. Gonna be there.
Saturday, Luna. |

Wayne Krantz
Trio
Wayne Krantz, ex-sideman with Steely Dan, Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham and others,
gave it up to lead a band in NYC with Tim Lefebvre and Keith Carlock. Deeply grooving
and interactive, highly individualized and innovative, Krantz undermines establishment
complacency at every turn. Born in Corvallis. Monday,
Sam Bond's Garage. |

Tret Fure plays the Unitarian
Universalist Church on Sunday...

Gather 'round all ye reggae fans! The one and only Itals are
coming to town! When and where you ask? The WOW Hall of course, Thursday, April 4th.
They've been around longer than many of their fans, since 1976, and have been delivering
a potent message of unity and spirituality. "Ital" means pure, natural
and unprocessed, which describes their way of life as much as their melodious reggae
music.
Samurai Duck on Thursday hosts Skylab, Brundlefly
and Abandon Ship. The first two bands are from Canada and Abandon Ship is
a threesome from Eugene. Abandon Ship draws influences from just about everybody
in the indie rock world worth namedropping, but doesn't claim to sound like anyone
in particular. We'll have to find out firsthand how original Ship can be.
Vancouver's Brundlefly divulges 12 tracks of intimate pop on its
sophomore disc, By The Way. Musically ranging from melancholic to happy to
serene, the lyrics reveal a kind of creepy undertone. Appropriate, I guess, for a
band that took its name from Jeff Goldblum's character in the 1986 film, The Fly.
Friday's WOW show is The Big Payback Tour, four fab (I refuse
to use the word "phat") hip-hop groups: One Man Army, of the group
Binary Star; Owazaar, of Typical Cats (from Chicago); The Boom Bap
Project and Ol' Dominion.
That same night at Sam Bond's, Dromedary and ARC Libre
appear for a night of improvisational folk, world, and jazz. ARC Libre, composed
of three musicians who collectively explore "free jazz, new music, popular music,
and traditional folkloric." Dromedary hails from that musically profuse college
town, Athens, Georgia. The duo pulls influences from all over the world, weaving
a universal thread throughout its original compositions and improvised pieces.
On Saturday, Cocaine Unicorn, The Grand Letdown and
Ladykiller will rock out John Henry's. There are only a few more shows 'til
the crew finds a new place to pull up its bar stools. Having seen uncountable fantastic
shows at John Henry's, I am sorry to see it close its doors, as it must do pretty
soon, and I hope it finds a new place. Word is the owners are looking into a "top
secret location" that should be announced soon.
The Wild Duck hosts another Sprout City Studios Battle of the
Bands contest. This time the battlers are Pellet Gun, Conception,
Eve's Second Sin, Betty Already and Sik 9.
Remember Limp (San Fran)? Sure you do. The band is playing
Saturday at the WOW Hall, along with Whippersnapper (So. Cal.), Inspection
12 (Jacksonville) and Some Cheap Christ (Eugene). Alternative radio airplay
has fueled Limp's success, along with the three albums it's recorded for Honest Don's
Records.
The Buzz Coffeehouse in the EMU hosts Deborah Bartley Saturday.
The Seattle-based Bartley has been compared to Beth Orton, while her lyrics are intuitively
sharp and bare-boned.
Tret Fure performs Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist
Church in Eugene. A pioneer in getting the music industry to pay attention to female
musicians, Fure has had a busy year. She has a new CD entitled Back Home,
has released a cookbook featuring her own recipes, and created her own line of clothing
called Tomboy Girl and opened a retail store. Whew!
Cheryl Wheeler, a New Englander since 1976, will perform
at the WOW Sunday along with our own Debbie Diedrich. Wheeler's performances are
not those of the typical folkie -- she sings songs, tells stories and discusses issues
that will leave you laughing through tears.
