THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:
  Keller Williams
Some consider Keller a musical genius, and his sound is very playful. He admits to playing for himself as much as for the audience. "Keeping myself happy is the first priority. That's just the way it is," admits Keller. Nevertheless, his sounds, playful as they are, have a way of inviting the audience along.
Thursday, Wild Duck.

  Brian Cutean
Cutean celebrates the Vernal Equinox with folky tunes full of wordplay. Willamette Week said he's got a "Gandalf-esque appearance," with a "penchant for convoluted puns, and socially and psychically conscious songs..."
Saturday, Cafe Paradiso.

  The Meditations
This old-school Jamiacan vocal trio is one of the MUST-see reggae groups who fortunately find their way to Eugene. Praise Jah for the I-5 corridor and trustafarians. The Meditations are among the rootsiest and most beautifully resonating reggae groups among this planet's six billion inhabitants.
Sunday, WOW Hall.

Space Rock & Hip Hop
Punk and jump-blues, too.
By Dave Gingold

Drums and Tuba plays the Wild Duck on Friday...
.

Samurai Duck hosts The Warlocks Thursday, that cool eight-piece from Los Angeles. Rise and Fall, the band's year-old, six-song, 40-minute debut CD, is a worthy "space rock" concept album of sonic proportions akin to Spacemen 3. "Jam of the Witches" begins with a smoldering display underlaid with a hypnotic bass line, propelling everything forward to an inevitable climax that fades to gray right before taking your breath away. Guitarist and vocalist Bobby Hecksher spent time in Brian Jonestown Massacre before colliding with those who formed the Warlocks.

The music conjures up a fuzzed out and LSD-laced Spiritualized, equally capable of leading you into a substance-induced dream as trading drum and guitar barbs. The vocals and lyricism keep you rooted, saving you from entirely floating away.

Friday, check out Drums and Tuba at the Wild Duck. Since 1995, D.A.T. has been making its own unique way in the world. Tony Nozero (drums) and Brian Wolff (tuba) started out as Just Drums and Tuba, but quickly realized that more was needed. Neal McKeeby rounds out the sound on guitar, playing music much more versatile than might be expected. The trio plays a rhythmic mix of many modern styles, funk, punk, rock, electronica, etc. Live sampling of each other's playing augments the design.

The WOW hosts The Summit Friday. Local hip-hop galore, featuring Raging Family, Eugene's turntablist trip hoppers. Also on the bill are The Burn Unit, Third World, DJ Billy, Mary Ellis, Aaron Noble, DJ Jeff Ray and DJ C4.

I've talked about Deathray before. I've told you that two of the guys used to be in Cake and were the ones who wrote Cake's chart-topping songs. I promise this is the last time I'll mention that they used to be in Cake. It's time for you to discover how good Deathray is on its own merits. Trust me, pop fans.

Deathray's new five-tune E.P., White Sleeves, was released Feb. 23. www.deathraymusic.com is under construction right now, but promises to be super cool. Deathray is playing with Knievel and Cocaine Unicorn at Downtown Lounge Friday.

Saturday, visit The Downtown Lounge for High Violets, The Scooters and Heavenly Oceans. The High Violets are four people made up of former members of such illustrious Portland bands as The Bella Low, Echoplex and Kaitlyn ni Donovan. The band's website featured much critical acclaim, all of it using high-brow adjectives such as this blurb, "A glowing haze of gossamer guitars, cottony vocal clouds and entrancing rhythms."

From Cardiff, Wales, The Scooters just may hold the future of pop music in their smudgy little hands. One L.A. journalist raves: "A dirtier, scruffier version of The Beatles." The band turns more and more heads wherever it goes, and now the group has a new stateside release called I Can See Your House From Here, available in U.S. stores since February.

Sin In Space touches down Monday at the Downtown Lounge. From Santa Cruz, one of the members, Brendan Thompson on bass, also plays with Slow Gherkin. The CD Asteroid Band places this group in the upper echelons of indie rock and pop. Male/female vocals and an explosive guitar edge highlight the sweet and snappy forays.

Harry Connick Jr. graces the Hult Center stage Tuesday. He has a large body of work, most recently augmented by the simultaneous release of 30 and Songs I Heard. An accomplished actor as well as musician, Connick is a consummate showman professional and attentive to the audience. Songs I Heard allows Connick to craft new approaches to songs from classic movie and TV shows. 30, which is the age at which Connick recorded the CD, displays his considerable talents on jump blues numbers, popular numbers and jazz standards, and even features Wynton Marsalis on piano and trumpet.
