CLUBS:

B-Side Players
Opening for the Wailers, B-Side is a band they say's like a young War
meeting Lenny Kravitz with a dose of Ben Harper. Sounds pretty good, don't it? Saturday, McDonald Theatre. |

Misty River
CD Release Party
Dana Abel, Chris Kokesh, Laura Quigley and her mamasan Carol Harley hold
a party to release their second album, Live at the Backgate Stage. Their voices are
like sugarcubes, and they handle guitars, fiddles, banjos, bass and accordion along
with percussion instruments to weave folk, country and bluegrass into Americana.
Friday, Sam Bond's Garage. |

The Motet
Live CD Recording
Long ago in Afro-Cuban American funky jazz sets, two folks were called
a duo. Three made a trio, four a quartet, five a quintet, and six were considered
"mo," as in "mo" than five. Or maybe that's a pile of horse honkey.
Nevertheless, a lively night. Friday, WOW Hall. |

Trio Slavej performs at Cafe Paradiso
Friday, March 22...
. |
|
Over the past year, the Eugene music scene has been revitalized by
new faces who are programming fascinating music. Since Randy Hamme took over bookings
at Café Paradiso, for example, a number of fine local acts and road shows
have appeared there, such as last Sunday's show with former Solas singer Karan Casey.
On Friday, March 22, the club hosts Trio Slavej performing
Balkan and Romani (Gypsy) folk music from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, and Romania.
The group consists of UO music Prof. Mark Levy (who's brought so many fine
international performers here as part of the school's acclaimed World Music Series),
singer and fellow UO Prof. Carol Silverman, and multi-instrumentalist Kalin
Kirilov (who recently moved here from Bulgaria), playing traditional instruments
including various flutes, bagpipe, lute, clarinet and accordion.
The Balkan area has for centuries been a crossroads of Western
and Eastern cultures, and its music draws on influences from throughout Asia and
Europe. Silverman and Levy have devoted decades to the study of these cultures and
this music, best known for its complex, danceable rhythms, haunting melodies, virtuosic
improvisation, and rapid-fire tempos. Should be exciting.
Other new faces are reinvigorating old spaces. I finally got to
take in a concert -- last month's suave show with Portland's Pink Martini -- at the
refurbished McDonald Theatre, and my hat's off to Kit Kesey & Co. for turning
it into an ideally sized site for many performers, including opening act Toca, an
offshoot of Rubberneck, which showcased its happy grooves before PM charmed the packed
house.
At the UO's Beall Hall, the Oregon Festival of American Music's
Erik Martin has started an exciting new series called Now Hear This! The latest installment
brought bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist/guitarist Mike Marshall, whose absolute
command of their instruments and deep musical knowledge produced much imaginative
interplay. Meyer did as much bowing as plucking, achieving a cello-like sound, and
both players offered delicious original compositions (based on blues, classical,
Appalachian, Brazilian, even Irish music), a warm stage manner, and a superb evening
of intimate chamber-folk music.
Another recent arrival, UO music Prof. Mark Kaczmarczyk, seems
determined to push the UO opera program beyond the usual suspects. Last month's brilliant
performance of Handel's Semele turned limitations -- the static nature of
Baroque opera, the Willamette Hall atrium's limitations as a performance space, the
plot's dramatic weaknesses -- into assets, with singers sometimes deployed in stairwells
and balconies. Sprinkled with sly humor, the production exploited some of the myth
similarities to recent national political events: Jupiter is a glad-handing, sax-playing
president; Semele, a beret- and (possibly stained) blue-dress-wearing young tart
eager to get close to him; a vengeful wife ... it was close, but there was no cigar.
At one point, the chorus sang while costumed as question-shouting reporters at a
presidential press conference. Soprano Kim Radatz (as the saucy Moni-, er, Semele)
and Melody Vogel (whose comic moves almost stole the show) were especially impressive.
Kudos to Kaczmarczyk (who devised the concept, played harpsichord and directed the
instrumental consort and chorus) for one of the most creative and accomplished UO
productions I've seen.
Another unusual opera graced the Hult Center last week when the
Eugene Opera performed Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, the first in a welcome new
series of American operas. Though, to me, Susannah's blend of Appalachian
language and accent ("you lyin' varmint") meshes uneasily with the music's
high operatic style, this production did it justice.
With all these new faces infusing Eugene with interesting new music,
don't forget the old sources of new sounds, such as the UO's Vanguard Series, which
brings the Charles Dowd Percussion Ensemble to Beall Hall on Sunday afternoon,
March 17 in a concert of percussion music of California composer William Kraft that
features a "duel" for trumpet and percussion, a piece that includes a narrator,
and a total of 200 percussion instruments.

Bill Willie Blues is at Diablo's
Downtown Lounge on Saturday...
. |
|
On Thursday Eugene gears up to welcome the bar-room blues of George
Thorogood and The Destroyers to the McDonald. Another excellent way to
spend Thursday evening would be with Laura Veirs and Danny Barnes at
Sam Bond's. Veirs, a young and talented songwriter based in Seattle, and Barnes will
pair up for duets.
Guitarist and banjo-plucker Viers has released a very impressive
second CD, The Triumphs and Travails of Orphan Mae, that reveals new depths
at each listen. Part traditional bluegrass balladry and modern technical wizardry,
it travels the oftentimes mournful and exhilarating landscape of the great American
West. From the opening strains of "Jailhouse Fire," she sets up a mood
of anticipation, only assuaged by listening to Orphan Mae again and again.
I enjoy everything Barnes has recorded, from his groundbreaking punk/bluegrass with
Austin, Texas's Bad Livers, to his solo work, to his acoustic bluegrass trio Thee
Old Codgers. You can't lose on this one.
Los Angeles based band Still appears Thursday at the Buzz
coffeehouse in the EMU. Performers of a song you may have heard on the radio, "The
Distance," Still presents energetic guitar-based power-pop with a dash of rock
and a pinch of country.
Anybody into dancing to some wonderful Western swing had better
not miss Big Sandy at the Wild Duck Friday. Backed by his fabulous Fly-Rite
Boys, Big Sandy delivers a brawny, authentic sound perfect for dancing.
Gearing up for St. Patrick's Day, Celtic band Misty River
will appear at Sam Bond's Friday, along with Eugene's comedian-uber-alles Ty Connor.
Also Friday, the WOW welcomes The Motet. A six-piece exploring
African and Cuban rhythms melded with jazz and funk, The Motet calls Boulder, Colo.,
home.
St. Patty's weekend celebrations continue Saturday with Eugene
Weekly's Jolly Leprechaun Jam at Diablo's Downtown Lounge. Bill Willie
Blues, Papa's Soul Kitchen, The Jeffersons and Dr. Theopolis
entertain, door prizes and more. Frequent visitor to Eugene Jerry Joseph (usually
with The Jackmormons) will give an acoustic solo show Saturday at Sam Bond's.
Two worthy benefits Saturday will leave you perplexed as to which
of all these great shows to attend. First, Venezuelan singer and guitarist Irene
Farrera combines a release party for her fourth CD, Serenata, with a benefit
for CISCAP, the Community in Solidarity with Central American People. This particular
event will raise funds for the women's movement in El Salvador and increased Latino
outreach in Eugene's Whiteaker neighborhood. Serenata incorporates original
Farrera songs with native regional instrumentation and rhythms from Venezuela's coast.
The Okros Ensem-ble from Budapest, Hungary will perform
two concerts at Eugene's Central Lutheran Church, with the earlier 3:30 pm concert
benefiting EC Cares Autism Team. EC Cares supports families and children with a variety
of disabilities. The ensemble will perform traditional village music of Hungary and
Transylvania on authentic instruments.
I would be remiss if I didn't inform you that legendary reggae
artists The Wailers will be appearing Saturday at the McDonald, along with
openers B-Side Players.
Sunday, The Soreng Theater welcomes singers Cris Williamson
and Holly Near. Separately, the two musicians have long careers of activism
in the realms of Earth stewardship and women's issues embraced by their music. Together,
they merge their philosophies for a joint tour, the first time they've performed
together in 20 years.
John O'Henry's is the place to be for St. Patty's Day local punk
rock, featuring Blockhead, Shortround and Murdaholics. The Downtown
Lounge Sunday gets ready for another round of Sprout City Studios Battle of the Bands.
This time the battle is fought by Dave Davis, Hollowbody, Rhythm
Pimps, Betty Already and Sik9.
Everton Blender, with opener Cansaman will be at
the WOW Sunday. (Where's the plethora of Celtic bands that usually appears around
town this time of year?) Blender is one of Jamaica's best dancehall performers.
Performer John Trudell, a tirelessly motivating force for
environmental, social and Native American issues comes to town Tuesday at the WOW.
He will share with you words and music from his new collection of songs, Bone
Days. Actress Angelina Jolie might seem an unlikely name to associate with the
activist Trudell, but not so. Jolie has been appointed Goodwill Ambassador to the
U.N. High Commissioner of Refugees. Not only does she work for international humanitarian
efforts in this capacity, but she has founded the All Tribes Foundation, seeking
to support Native communities right here at home. Who else to serve as creative advisor
for this organization but Mr. Trudell? This no doubt assures a continued and revitalized
presence on the scene from Trudell, and many more words of wisdom and truth from
him.
