THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:
 |
|
Tony Furtado
Never to be seen out of doors without little dark oval sunglasses, Furtado tosses
funk, jazz, blues, Irish and American folk into a blender, sets it on high, and then
pours culturally rich and groovy musical smoothie into the ears of concert goers
around the nation. Wednesday, Wild Duck. |
 |
|
Jon Dee
Graham
Jon's one of those rare musicians who spells his first name with three letters
when the rest of the country mostly uses four. He compounds his assault on American
nomenclature by having a three letter middle name. His last title, however, is a
wonderful preschool snack. This Austin singer/guitarist's latest release features
musicians from the groups Cracker and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Opening for
Hot Club Sandwich. Saturday, Sam Bond's
Garage. |

Benefit
for the Green Party
Irene Farrera, Bindaas, Casey Neill, Walker T. Ryan and Barbara Healey toss in
their musical cents to raise money for the party of Greens. The lineup specializes
in Venezuelan, Middle Eastern, Celtic, American folk and blues music. A special discount
is available for folk toting stubs from the Nader speech. That's one smiling strummer.
Thursday, Cafe Paradiso. |

Le Tigre performs at WOW Hall

|
This week it's in the oodles, friends. Well, he's not really musical,
but Ralph Nader will be present at a benefit dinner at Cafe Paradiso the 7th. Afterwards,
there will be a benefit concert for the Lane County Pacific Greens Party, featuring
Irene Farerra, Barbara Healy, Bindaas, Walker T. Ryan,
Casey Neill and some surprise guests. You get a discount off your admission
if you bring your ticket stub from Nader's speech.
The 8th, up at the Coburg Grange Hall (and am I not always nattering
on about shows at the Granges?) you get bluegrass bigwigs in the form of guitarist
Jim Hurst, bassist Missy Raines, banjo player Bill Evans, and
mando man Steve Smith, as part of the IBMA Award Winners tour. Listen for
these cats live on KRVM at 5 pm. Hurst and Raines were named as 2001 Guitar Player
and Bass Player of the Year, respectively, by the International Bluegrass Music Association.
You might know Bill Evans from his work with Dry Branch Fire Squad. The Emerald
Valley Boys open.
THIS WEEK: The 7th brings the grindcore of Sacramento's 26 Weeks to
Samurai Duck, with Conception opening. Acoustic blues rules the evening of
March 8th, as Terry Robb, Bill Rhoades and Alan Hagar blue up
the WOW Hall. The elegant period jazz of Hot Club Sandwich is at Sam Bond's
Garage the 9th, with Jon Dee Graham opening. Also on the 9th, reggae from
More Time, Vibe Nation, Ichelle & the Circle of Light, and
The African Kings is at the WOW. This show is a Celebration of the Life of
Michael D, a prominent figure in Oregon reggae for many years, who passed away last
December.
The Cuban music of Son Milao is at Sam Bond's the 10th.
Those Zappa revivalists Project Object return to town the 10th, with Ike
Willis (you know, Joe, from Joe's Garage) and Napoleon Murphy Brock. The
heavy sounds of Stark Raving Naked resound within John Henry's the 10th, with
Wallace and Mosaic opening.
It's a night of "Feminist Rock" at the WOW the 12th,
in the form of Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed and Tami Hart. Le Tigre,
a trio featuring Bikini Kill-er Kathleen Hanna, lays down quirky, noisy, poppy
pop with some balls to it on their Feminist Sweepstakes CD. Listen to "On
Guard" it's a fairly thorough ass kicking.
Chicks on Speed's The Re-Releases of the Un-Releases is
full of art school shenanigans that evoke The Flying Lizards at their better moments,
maybe. Alpha Charlie is at the Downtown Lounge the 13th, with Uzbek Dog
opening.
