They're warm blooded and rarely lay eggs. Once they did, and when it cracked,
the grandson of legendary Pete Seeger crawled out and yelled "mama!" Ruth
Ungar and Michael Merenda scooped him up and said, "no, mammal." Together
they play contemporary folk roots. Wednesday,
Sam Bond's Garage. |

Milagro Vargas...

Sometimes you just have to look beyond the label. For me, "Valentine's
Day" translates to Support the Greeting Card Industry through Prepackaged Expressions
of Sentimentality, and "Pops Concert" means treacly orchestral arrangements
of pop songs intended to bolster a symphony's bottom line by luring in listeners
beyond the usual classical demographic.
Yet the Eugene Symphony frequently manages to inject musical integrity
into its pops shows, and this Thursday's VD concert, showcasing the immensely talented
and tasteful guitarist Don Latarski, is no exception. The show features music of
Gershwin and Richard Rodgers (one of the century's most popular composers, through
his music for a good proportion of Broadway's finest musicals), Stevie Wonder, and
more.
Hopeless romantics who want a taste of desire's consequences (two-timing,
jealousy, revenge, immolation, wine) should head over to the UO's Willamette Hall
Feb. 23-24 when the University Opera Ensemble performs Handel's great Baroque opera/oratorio,
Semele. The revival of Baroque opera in general and Handel operas in particular
is one of the brightest developments to hit the genre in decades. This one abounds
with even more than Handel's usual complement of memorable tunes, and for this production,
UO Prof. Mark Kaczmarczyk has taken the original production's message to a ruler
(don't fool around with a young tart, as the King of England was doing at the time)
and applied it to contemporary events in Washington, D.C. This should be fun.
For another "opera" that transcends the term's negative
associations (e.g. overstuffed divas spewing overheated Romantic melodrama), head
up to Portland (be sure to wave at Pink Martini on their way down to the McDonald
Theatre) on Friday, Feb. 15 to catch the great Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla's
gripping little tango opera, Maria de Buenos Aires, at Reed College's Kaul
Auditorium. Eugene's own world-class mezzo-soprano Milagro Vargas is joined by Coco
Trivisonno (on the accordion-like bandoneon) and the always-excellent Third Angle
new music ensemble, conducted by the Oregon Symphony's Murry Sidlin.
The sold-out 2000 production of this surreal drama, with a sublime
performance by Vargas, was one of that year's highlights of Oregon music, so if you
missed it then, don't make that mistake this time.
The UO's Beall Hall showcases a number of attractive concerts.
On Saturday, Feb. 16, Celtic harpist Kim Robertson transcends another label (the
dreaded "New Age") in performances of traditional Irish and Scottish tunes
that are easy on the ears without dissolving into mush. She'll be joined by the UO
Harp Ensemble and UO faculty member and fellow harpist Laura Zaerr. On Sunday, Feb.
24, UO violinist Fritz Gearhart and pianist Victor Steinhardt play music of Schubert,
Mozart and two fine 20th-century American composers, William Grant Still (for whom
Gearhart has a special affinity) and Lukas Foss.
On Thursday Feb. 21, the acclaimed Vienna Piano Trio plays music
of Beethoven, Brahms, and 20th century Anglo-American Rebecca Clarke. Best of all,
on Tuesday, Feb. 26, the Oregon Festival of American Music brings to Beall one of
the world's greatest bassists, Edgar Meyer (who's worked with symphony orchestras,
bluegrass and country bands, soundtracks, and more), and superb mandolinist/guitarist
Mike Marshall, whose telepathic interplay with fiddler Darol Anger produced brilliant
sparks on the Beall stage last fall.
Marshall and Meyer joined Bela Fleck on a fine album a few years
back, and Meyer gained wider notice through Appalachia Waltz project with
Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor. This is also music that transcends labels: Styles might
range from Bach to blues to bluegrass to originals and improvisations by both composer/performers.
Call it new American chamber music if you must, but hear it. This is another in OFAM's
exciting new Now Hear This! series, one of the best things to happen to Eugene music
in a good while.
The UO's World Music Series is fast becoming the most compelling
recurring music adventure in town. A much younger audience than usual packed Beall
for last week's spectacular WMS concert, featuring phenomenal sitarist Kartik Seshadri
and tablawalla extraordinaire Sanju Sahai. I've experienced quite a few sublime moments
at Beall over the years, but for sheer intensity, improvisatory interplay, and sustained
musicianship at the very highest level, none have surpassed the second half of this
one. It was one of the most moving, extraordinary displays of musical virtuosity
I've ever encountered.

Unavoidable
Valentines
Ah, the romance of Slayer

Pink Martini performs Friday at
the McDonald...
. |
|
Greetings everyone! Lovers and the loveless alike can seldom escape
the grasp of St. Valentine, though we may try. Satiny pink hearts and sundry sweets
are everywhere the eye gazes this time of year. For those souls planning anti-Valentine's
Day parties, sorry! The name "February" comes from the name of the Roman
goddess Februa, mother of Mars and matron saint of passionate love. So the whole
dang month might as well be 28 days of Valentine's celebrations! That gives you 27
more days and more ways to slather your lover with saccharine.
It's also the month of Mardi Gras, in case you needed a reason
to throw a party. Slayer at the McDonald Thursday might not be your ideal
way to celebrate a day of love, but it obviously is to many other people, as the
show is sold out. I realize it does little good to tell you all about a sold out
show if you don't have tickets, because you can't get tickets, but at least when
people start talking about the show you can't blame me for not telling you. I hope
Kerry King is wearing that cool wrist/forearm cuff with all the spikes sticking out
if it. If not, I think we who bought tickets should all demand some of our money
back!
The only unfortunate thing about the Slayer show is that it's on
the same night as the T.S.O.L. and Agnostic Front show at the WOW Hall,
with not enough time in between to see both. Go to one, miss the other. The agony.
Well, the hardcore punks will definitely be at the WOW Hall, and who can blame them?
T.S.O.L. are awesome old school So Cal punks, performing with the original line-up,
natch.
For 20 years, Agnostic Front has kicked socio-political punk-rock
ass all the way from New York City.
I've looked for and found the kind of diversity I was hoping for
in the McDonald Theatre. On Friday, Portland's lounge ensemble Pink Martini,
an act that couldn't be more polar opposite Slayer if they tried, performs. If you've
seen them before, you know they are professionals who deliver a rousing performance
of classic lounge tunes like "Brazil," "Que Sera Sera" or a reworking
of Ravel's "Bolero."
Sultry songs sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Greek, and of course,
English, will leave you swooning. Danceable rhythms will permeate the rarified air
and you will be drunk on your own pleasure with yourself for having purchased admission.
Martini is also rumored to be revealing new material.
Also on Friday, Spyglass appears at Sam Bond's with The
Visible Men and The Long Winters. Spyglass, from Seattle, says it best
themselves: "Thick, layered guitars culminate in orchestral soundscapes swirling
behind moody female vocals. Punctuated by occasional strings, organ and piano, Spyglass
delivers a haunting pop-laced cocktail that writers often compare to Portishead and
Lush." Haven't seen the Visible Men play yet, but I'm assured by insiders that
they're good.
Don't pass by Cafe Paradiso Saturday without stepping in to see
the Painting Daisies. This rad four-piece group of girls rocks out with fuzzy
guitar, snappy bass and a fresh perspective.
Diablo's and Downtown Lounge are hosting a Fat Tuesday celebration,
your last day to consume as much food, alcohol and sex as possible before the 40-day
spiritual penitence of Lent begins. Let Mood Area 52's "neuvo
tango" see you through to an unsullied beginning. Wednesday visit Sam Bond's
for The Mammals. The Mammals' CD is called Born Live. It's silly, but
it's really good old-timey string music, meaning fiddlin' folk. Ciao!
