THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:
 |

Honey Tongue
Fronted by powerhouse vocalist Jen Ayers, whose pipes have landed her gigs singing
the National Anthem to sold-out crowds at NBA games, the Tounge takes a long lick
of the Emerald City. This band was named a "Top Ten Indie band of 2001"
by www.femmusic.com. Wednesday, Downtown
Lounge. |

Freedy Johnston
Freedy's new album, Right Between the Promises, lends his uncanny storytelling
skill to 10 new songs that range from upbeat rockers to breezy ballads to a melancholy
banjo tune, plus a '70s pop cover thrown in for good measure. Thursday, Sam Bond's Garage. |

Rubberneck
Since their inception, Oregon's Rubberneck has used their soulful Latin funk
(they call it "Lunk,") to become one of the Northwest's biggest draws.
The latest release, El Nina, is a steadily grooved party album that endures
repeated listening. Friday, Wild
Duck. |

OFAM digs up classic
scores.

The OFAM orchestra performs the
score to Citizen Kane...

Most movie soundtracks are subordinated to the visuals they were designed
to enhance; few hold up as independent musical statements. After all, if a soundtrack
calls so much attention to itself that it distracts from what's happening onscreen,
the composer has failed. Being caught up in the stories before our eyes, however,
we too often fail to recognize the beauty of the cinematic art aimed at our ears.
This weekend, the Oregon Festival of American Music offers
a chance to appreciate some of the rare film music that stands on its own merits.
OFAM often dredges up undeservedly obscure American art music that was ignored just
because it came from the New World. This time, music director James Paul and the
festival's newly dubbed American Symphonia rescue some worthy sounds heretofore eclipsed
by their accompanying images, as well as by the misguided condescension of those
who regard mere movie music as unworthy of concert performance.
During the golden age of film music of the 1930s and '40s, Hollywood
studios scoured the pre-World War II refugee community for European directors and
composers to lend publicity and credibility to their films. Because most of them
were products of European romanticism, many of their scores feature big, splashy
orchestrations that would come off as melodramatic, even intrusive in today's films.
Saturday night at the Hult Center, we'll hear scores by two of them, the Austrians
Max Steiner (Casablanca) and Erich Korngold (Anthony Adverse and The
Prince and the Pauper).
Also heard will be Aaron Copland's Music for Movies, drawn
from his soundtracks for The City, Our Town and Of Mice and Men.
Copland's film scores (including Oscar-winning The Heiress) provided a lithe,
melodious antidote to the grandiose bombast of most big Hollywood soundtracks of
the time. The finest celluloid work comes from Copland's magnificent 1948 score to
The Red Pony.
We'll hear the concert suite Copland drew from the movie, accompanied
by the Eugene Ballet in an original dance choreographed by Toni Pimble. Composed
not long after his great ballets, Copland's score shares the supple rhythms, memorable
melodies and "American" idiom of Appalachian Spring and Rodeo,
so seeing it danced should be a treat.
Among Copland's circle of friends in New York City was Bernard
Herrmann, perhaps the greatest of all film composers. Best known today for his terrific
scores to so many of Alfred Hitchcock's finest films, especially the pulse-pounding
Psycho, Herrmann earlier collaborated with Orson Welles on several movie scores.
He's represented Saturday by his very first film score, the rambunctious soundtrack
for another screen classic, Citizen Kane.
Sunday afternoon's chamber music concert at the UO's Beall Hall
is devoted to the first family of film music: the Newmans. If you watch old movies,
you've surely heard some of Alfred Newman's more than 250 ultra-lush scores, which
won him nine Oscars. The program features a suite from his 1953 score, The Robe,
as well as film music from two of his children, Maria and Thomas. The latter has
garnered multiple Grammy and Oscar nominations for his soundtracks, which includes
one of the finest scores of recent years, his atmospheric, percussion-driven music
for American Beauty.
But the most famous Newman is Alfred's nephew, Randy, he of creaky
voice, clever lyrics, "Short People" and "Political Science"
and so many other wry yet revealing songs since the 1970s. This great songwriter
has a parallel career in film music, including lovely work in Ragtime and
Awakenings. Sunday's show includes some of the music he wrote for the Toy
Story movies, along with selections from his ambitious 1995 pop opera, Faust.
Like the great film composers, Igor Stravinsky (who was one of
the European refugees who rebuffed Hollywood's blandishments) won his greatest acclaim
for music written to accompany another art form: dance. Next Thursday, the Eugene
Symphony devotes an entire concert to early Stravinsky. His breakthrough work
was 1910's radiant ballet score, The Firebird, one of those rare living masterpieces
that sounds simultaneously classic and modern. The program also features his rarely
heard first symphony and another of his ballet masterpieces, 1920's delightful Pulcinella,
which marked Stravinsky's turn toward neo-classicism. Here the quintessential modernist
looked backward, drawing on composers such as Pergolesi to craft a lively, glistening
pastiche of Baroque forms that nevertheless bristles with a gentle knowingness and
irony that places it squarely in the 20th century.

Maceo
and More
Jazz to hip-hop, bluegrass
to punk.
By Vanessa
Salvia
There's so much going on this week! Here are some highlights. Thursday,
Jan. 17 Slick Rick rocks the WOW Hall. The rapper from the Bronx is still
going strong. The legendary hip-hopper appears along with DJ Fenix, DJ
Tekneek and others.
The Clumsy Lovers are still clumsy, with an enhanced double
CD to prove it. Still Clumsy After All These Years is jam-packed with a whole
slew of vibrant, hyped-up folky bluegrass. Hyped up is hardly sufficient. Go dancing
at a Clumsy Lovers show and you'll have your aerobic workout for the entire week!
Check 'em out the 17th at the Wild Duck.
Also on the 17th, Freedy Johnston and Ken Stringfellow
(formerly of The Posies) along with M Ward appear at Sam Bond's. The Posies
proudly funneled that British pop influence all the way to Seattle in the late '80s
and early '90s. Together with Johnston, a talented if melancholic songwriter, the
results are sure to be fabulous. M Ward's clear and cool guitar playing and singing
will enhance the evening.
Rubberneck funks up the Wild Duck with a deep down Latin
groove on Friday. The Bella Fayes, coming down from Portland, will be at Sam
Bond's that same night. I don't know much about this band yet, but I do know that
at least one member used to be in Drive, so that pretty much assures me they'll be
good.
Saturday, Americana rocker Ian Moore will be at Sam Bond's.
The WOW Hall hosts some of Eugene's (and Portland's) favorite rockers on Saturday.
Courtesy Clerks plays cool and catchy guitar-oriented punk that will definitely
get your head bobbin'! Shortround always delivers with well-crafted punk/hardcore.
Intricate breaks and changes boost their rocket-powered melodic but punchy punk.
And The Danged cannot be forgotten. They are right in your face with a homemade
potion concocted right in their own sonic still. They always bang out some sexy,
souped-up punk, rockabilly and stripped-down garagey blues. You have to see this
band! Lazoo adds some worldly jazz grooves to Luna's menu, also on Saturday.
Angela Le Compte will perform her songs, accompanying herself
on piano, at Sam Bond's. Passionflowers is an apt name for the fresh-faced
young lady's CD. The songs show an exuberant, romantic personality in the budding
stages of youth. She has an expressive, lilting voice, and songs about discovering
love and the ensuing heartbreak. A few more years and experiences will no doubt add
a more versatile depth to her lyrical approach.
Sam Bond's offers up The Belle Furies Monday. Straight outta
Austin, this trio boasts some hillbilly rock and soul, conjuring up Big Sandy as
well as Sam Cooke. The slappin' bass, rockin' guitar and crooning vocals will surely
get your attention.
I would be remiss if I didn't remind you all that the great
Maceo Parker is at the McDonald Tuesday. A legendary bad-ass sax player, having
played with both James Brown and George Clinton for years, Parker defines funk for
generations of people. His latest, Dial Maceo, is fresh and funky but still
classic Maceo. It even features a collaboration with another, very different James,
James Taylor.
Wednesday the Downtown Lounge features Seattle's Honey Tongue.
Milwaukee native Jen Ayers fronts the band, with a powerful, throaty vocal style
that seems too big to come from her 5' 3" frame. There's some solid rock happening
here. Along with some piano-driven tunes, and keyboard, Honey Tongue has found its
own niche.
That same night at Sam Bond's, The Dolly Ranchers and Cocaine
Unicorn take the stage. The four girls in the Dolly Ranchers take their inspiration
from the traveling troubadours of days gone by, claiming the great land of American
folk, bluegrass, and old-fashioned country as their own. Cocaine Unicorn I've seen
once and I can't wait to see them again. I'd like another gander at their New York-filtered
retro pop. See you there!
