dance: Philadanco (Philadelphia Dance Company) was founded 32 years ago by Joan Myers Brown with the dream of creating an ensemble that would ignite and popularize the art of black dance. Schooled in varied styles such as ballet, jazz, ethnic and modern dance, this technically superb company performs its Eugene debut at the Hult Center. See Monday Calendar.

music: Hey, ho! Maceo! Hey, ho! Maceo! After years of playing with James Brown and George Clinton, Maceo Parker is "the baddest sax player alive today" says the artist formerly known as Prince. Continually referred to as "legendary," the still very much existing Mr. Parker is the living, breathing, horn-blowing personification of everything and anything funky and soulful. At the McDonald Theatre. Good god! See Tuesday Calendar.

celebration: "Tragedy and Triumph: The Strengthening of America" is the title of the 2002 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. Featured at the Hult Center is keynote speaker Nathan McCall, author of Makes me Wanna Holler, and What's Going On, on Jan. 21. Continuing celebration events feature creative workshops Jan. 22, as well as a birthday cake reception and a "Unity" dinner and dance Jan. 23 at the UO. See Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Calendar.
