Wesley Willis
Oooh, daddy. Wesley Willis. Now this may be a rumor, but I hear a head-butt's
actually a hand-shake to this guy. I'll remain up by the bar, where I can Enjoy
Wesley's absolutety original schizophrenic rock, while staying away from his forehead.
Monday, John Henry's. |

West Coast
Rhythm Kings
They're like old-school, dude. Have you seen this guy? He dresses in a full-on
zoot-suit, or something, and he comes out and throws down this big board and tapdances.
And he plays harmonica and sings. He's like ... old-school. At this price, the Kings
are sure to bring down the roof at one of Eugene's newest venues. Saturday, Luna. |

Orange
Made of members from the John Shipe band, Satin Love Orchestra, Carmizin and
Corduroy, this hard-to-rhyme original rock quartet squeezes out the freshest nectar.
Hey, isn't that the quart-swilling Genesis juice-punk? Get some socks. Thursday, Cafe Paradiso. |

The Paul Safar Consort performs
Saturday at Cafe Paradiso..

Greetings everyone! Get your week started off with a bang Thursday
at Samurai Duck. Traveling all the way up from San Jose, the band High on Fire
will perform. HOF will be recording their Relapse Records debut in a few months,
having acquired the help of acclaimed producer Billy Anderson, who also twisted dials
for the Melvins, Mr. Bungle, and Neurosis. He'll also do live sound at the show.
From the old school of heavy, HOF shows great promise as an up-and-coming metal band
and features former Sleep guitarist Matt Pike on vocals. Last year Spin Magazine
named HOF "one of five metal bands to watch for." You heard it folks, High
on Fire at the Samurai Duck.
Luna, the new jazz venue next to Adam's Place, features Deb
Cleveland and her baking band Friday. Put your boogie shoes on, 'cuz Deb will
make you move with a mix of funk, blues and R & B.
Sam Densmore's Silverhawk, a three-piece based in Coos Bay, (yep,
Coos Bay) has in recent months garnered a lot of media attention. CMJ Music Magazine
says Silverhawk's debut EP, Flowers in June, embodies "rhythmic propulsion
and chorus perfection." Densmore is usually a solo artist, and this show,
Friday at Sam Bond's, will feature Densmore on his own, handling vocals and guitar.
Already an underground favorite as a member of Portland's Frequency db, this just
gives audiences another reason to remember Densmore's name.
Also appearing at this show will be Seattle's Evangeline,
who craft beautiful and wistful countryish rock, the likes of which Linda Ronstadt
or Gram Parsons would have made, decades before the term "alt-country"
came to mean so little. Their CD Felt Like Home is a batch of 10 mid-tempo
ballads, pulling inspiration from the innocent country days of decades gone by, namely
the '70s. Primary vocalist Jennifer Potter's clear and cool vocals soar alongside
Kevin Suggs's pedal steel. Songs meander from last-call drunken ballads to lost hopes,
lost loves, and those got-to-move-on ramblin' blues.
Saturday, Eugene's West Coast Rhythm Kings will add some
excitement to Luna's stage. WCRK are an inspired sextet, harkening back to the golden
age of big band and swing. Steeped in the blues, they are also flavored with a little
jazz, a little swing and some old-time vaudevillian entertainment.
Eugene's Paul Safar Consort will entertain Saturday at Café
Paradiso. Flowing through folk, rock, blues and jazz, Safar's piano and guitar work
have earned him a reputation as a regional favorite.
John Henry's will host a very unique performer Monday, Wesley
Willis. Willis is a physically formidable Chicago-born man with sprouting dreadlocks
and unkempt clothing who was homeless for many years before a Chicago art dealer
"discovered" his pen and ink drawings of city streets. Willis is a diagnosed
schizophrenic whose creativity is not limited to artwork. He is a most prolific songwriter,
although his subject matter and profanities are oftentimes as shocking as they are
hilarious. This show is just the man himself and his keyboard, having parted ways
with his former backing band, The Fiasco. Willis's childlike perspective elicits
songs of adulation about the most unexpected things such as riding a bus, McDonald's,
people he's known and his favorite bands. His drawings are amazing for someone completely
untrained, and his music you just have to experience for yourself.
Tuesday save room for Medusa at the WOW, along with Abstract
Rude, 2 Mex, DJ Drez, Syndel and DJ Wicked. With her band Feline Science, the Queen
of Underground hip-hop commands the stage, "blending old school funk with lyrical
science."
