THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:
 |
|
Don Latarski
The Don's got the roving fingers of a well-practiced, well-versed, well-read,
well-strummed, well-picked, well-tuned, well-plucked guitarist. Well well well. Friday
and Saturday, Oregon Electric Station. |
 |
|
Syrius Jones
Looking down at these fellows makes me feel like Gandalf surrounded by Frodo,
Sam, Merry and Pippin. But who's who? This white-walled four can bicker over their
own rock 'n rolls. Saturday, Wild Duck. |
 |
|
Clair Bard
This compassionate writer has a voice that fans describe as "comforting,"
"crystalline," and "rich as the finest chocolate." Bard focuses
on her own unique brand of country, folk, pop and blues. She plays along with Andrew
Calhoun, who is a fine fingerpicking guitarist with a strong background in in traditional
and contemporary folk. Sunday, Sam Bond's Garage. |

Tokyo String Quartet performs
at Beall Concert Hall Thursday, January 17..

An auld acquaintance is brought to mind -- and ears -- next weekend
when former Eugene Opera music director Frank Graffeo returns to town to conduct
two candlelight concerts by the Oregon Mozart Players at Central Presbyterian Church
(15th & Patterson). My relatives in Graffeo's new haunts, Knoxville, Tenn., tell
me Graffeo's doing great things there, and local opera lovers can get a taste of
this greatness when he returns to Eugene to conduct the OMP orchestra and two guest
stars, tenor David Gustafson and soprano Amy Hansen.
The concert will feature selections from Mozart's glorious The
Magic Flute, Mascagni's Cavaleria Rusticana, and Puccini's La Bohème,
as well as an aria by Donizetti and Tchaikovsky's orchestral suite, Mozartiana.
The Mozart Players' music director, Andrew Massey, returns for
their next show Feb. 9 and 10, conducting Mozart's great Symphony No. 35,
Milhaud's jazzy The Bull on the Roof; and Richard Strauss's The Bourgeois
Gentleman. Mozart's "Haffner" symphony is simply one of the most compelling
orchestral excursions ever composed, while Milhaud's breezy, Brazilian-flavored suite
(named after a bar) manages to be both instantly recognizable, thoroughly 20th century,
and quite a lot of fun.
Mozart is also on the program on Thursday, Jan. 17, when one of
the great classical music ensembles, the Tokyo String Quartet, performs at Beall
Concert Hall in the UO's Chamber Music Series. This award-winning group has released
30 CDs and won acclaim for concerts all over the world. The main work is Brahms'
Op. 67 quartet, but I find greater joy in two others on the program: Schubert's tuneful
little Quartettsatz, an unfinished, yet standalone piece; and Mozart's last
quartet, which sounds a lot more like Haydn. The concert also features a nod to modernism
with a Webern miniature.
Beall Hall hosts another good show on Sunday, Jan. 13, when the
UO's Faculty Artist Series presents bassoonist cellist Oreet Ranon and pianist-harpsichordist
Andrew Campbell in an unusual program of works by Böddecker, Maros, André
Previn, Kreutzer, and Jorge Mockert. And on Saturday, Jan. 19 the UO's Oregon Jazz
Celebration (a day of workshops, concerts and jams) culminates in a Beall Hall concert
featuring modern big-band composer/conductor, Maria Schneider, a Gil Evans protégé
who's won the Down Beat critics composer of the year award.
The most fascinating concerts of the new year so far are happening
in Portland. On Friday Jan. 11th, at Reed College's Kaul Auditorium, Third Angle
music ensemble hosts two of China's finest contemporary composers, Zhou Long and
Chen Yi (who was recently awarded the $250,000 Charles Ives prize in composition),
along with pipa virtuoso Min Xiao Fen. The show features Soul, for string quartet
and pipa; Su for harp and flute; the exquisite Song of the Ch'in for string quartet;
the octet Sparkle, Duo Ye for solo pipa; and Shuo for string quintet. Reed College
composer/professor David Schiff will host a pre-concert talk. Call 503-228-1353 for
ticket info.
Speaking of Portland, let me tip you off to a couple of terrific
shows coming up there next month. On Friday, Feb. 1, the Bang on a Can All Stars,
America's finest new music ensemble, appears in two shows at the Portland Institute
for Contemporary Art. Their repertoire ranges from Steve Reich and Brian Eno to jazzers
Ornette Coleman and Don Byron to their own striking compositions, especially those
of clarinetist/saxophonist Evan Ziporyn. And on Feb. 7-9, the riveting Rinde Eckert
performs his newest opus, "And God Created Great Whales," at the Newmark
Theatre. Eckert, a new music and theater icon, plays a composer who's descending
into madness as he attempts to complete his final work, an opera based on Moby
Dick. Expect intense, dark, and often comic moments from this amazing performer.

To live on this Earth is to be subject to the inexorable march of
time. Hopefully we are happily entering this New Year. Although the nights are getting
shorter, there are still plenty of hours to enjoy evening music venues, to discover
a new local favorite or to catch a big name act you know and love. I hope your New
Year's resolutions include getting out for more local entertainment!
Remembering old friends both near and far, here's an old friend
who's leaving us. Dutch, former frantic frontman for local favorites Jack
Ass Willie, Dirtweed and others has joined the Navy! The music community and all
his friends will miss his warm smile and good humor. See him off Thursday, Jan. 3rd
at Sam Bond's. This no-cover event will feature the musical variety of Toad in
the Hole and The Jug Band, starting at 9:30 pm.
Here's an old friend returned to us. Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons
perform Friday at the Wild Duck. Joseph never fails to deliver on stage, and
his powerful backups -- drummer Brad Rosen (also a member of Joseph's former band
Little Women) and bassist Junior Ruppel -- tighten down interpretations of Joseph's
songs into stripped-down Americana rock. You've heard me say all this before, but
I'll say it again until you believe me: Joseph is really a great songwriter: intelligent,
poetic, and spiritual, and if you haven't been to church with the Jackmormons yet,
you should.
Accomplished fiddler, creative writer and poet Ken Waldman
visits Tsunami Books on the 4th from his home base in Anchorage. A resident of America's
"Last Frontier" for 16 years who has lived all over the state, Waldman
naturally infuses his songs, poems and prose with the Alaskan experience. His Appalachian-style
fiddling deftly accompanies his rustic storytelling and poetry. It's a unique treat
to hear Waldman's spoken bits about living with no modern amenities accompanying
his traditional fiddle tunes and original compositions. Waldman's recent CD, Burnt
Down House, features Andrea Cooper on banjo, flute and pennywhistle along with
several of Waldman's Alaskan musician friends on traditional instruments.
On Saturday, Syrius Jones and the Olem Alves Funk Band
perform at the Wild Duck. Olem Alves should be familiar to you all through his many
years of performing at the Country Fair, the Folk Festival and many other local venues
and events. Talented players all, Alves and Keyboardist Asher Fulero (The Habaneros,
Leila Chieko Trio, Ashleigh Flynn, Gabriel Blue, others) and bassist Zak Johnson
(Abakadubi, West Coast Rhythm Kings) and drummer Steve Weems have a tight and energetic
funk presentation.
Visit Sam Bond's Saturday for Middle Eastern music and dance by
Serpentina a la Nar and guests. Dance instructor Astryd de Michele choreographs
and performs. Her dance students will present their recital earlier in the evening.
Americana is the appeal of Sam Bond's guests Andrew Calhoun
and Claire Bard on Sunday. There's a bluegrass jam at the old garage on Tuesday
and the Jimmy Bennington Trio performs jazz on Wednesday.
The WOW Hall jumps back into the game next week after its end-of-year
break with two performances by the Young Women's Theater Collective and two
big hip-hop shows, Slick Rick and Medusa, so stay tuned for more info!

2Bucks Short Goes Long
Sprout City Studios, together with several other local
merchants, have teamed up to offer a sweet pot to a lucky local band! Sunday, Dec.
30 at Downtown Lounge was the final Battle of the Bands event, featuring five of
Eugene's best bands. Competition was friendly but fierce, with all five bands performing
in front of an appreciative crowd. Three anonymous judges watched every move the
bands made, rating them on professionalism, crowd interaction and musicianship. First
was Ennis Bee, who initially struck me as sounding like '60s pop with a harder
edge. They quickly warmed up, displaying intricate drumbeats, and melodic, buzzing
guitar work. 2Bucks Short impressed me with their fun skate punk sound. Razor-sharp
guitar and an emphasis on lyricism propel them forward with head-bobbing catchiness.
Cocaine Unicorn was a lot of fun too, reminiscent of Lou Reed as much as later
Replacements, not just for the drug references but also the stripped down rock rhythms.
Mosaic was impressive. Tight jams accentuated by an earthy conga reminded
me of Blind Melon, but with a harder edge. They really played their hearts out. Last
but not least, NW Royale. An innocent enough sounding name, until Deftones-ish
metal with bits of rap interspersed begins. Three vocalists contributing plus a drummer
and a keyboarder who also does double duty on drums provoke a heavy, almost punk-edged
metal attack. My only grouse about the evening was that with 22 musicians present,
none were female. All five bands deserved to win, but in the end, 2Bucks Short emerged
victorious. Prizes for them will include four hours free recording time at Sprout
City Studios. Mosaic and NW Royale, will split the runner-up prize, three hours each
of free rehearsal time at Sprout City Studios. Congratulations guys! -- Vanessa
