CLUBS:

Carlos Washington's
Giant People
C's soul combines hip-hop, jazz and world music. With a former member of the
Cuban Army Band on guitar, an octopus on drums and Carlos's trumpy hooked up to special
effects, the Giant People get epic on your jiggling booty. Thursday, Taylor's. |

TR Kelley
Years of performing experience have given TR the ability to use her powerhouse
vocals and acoustic guitar until the stage, club and audience are nicely beguiled
into her back pocket. Her original songs of love, lust, rage, death, & subversion
are intermixed with carefully chosen covers, audacious commentary, unplanned comedy
bits and jaw-dropping instrumentals. Friday,
Cafe Paradiso. |

Bill Willie
Blues
For years people wondered. Whispers traded secrets in the wind. No one knew just
why old Bill Willie had vanished. Then, one stormy night, Willie's hearbreaking blues
were heard slithering from beneath a secretive nightspot's door, and the world could
get back to normal. Friday and Saturday, Bliss
Steak Ranch. |

Kitka sings at WOW Hall on Sunday.
. |
|
Like pumpkin pie, turkey and cranberries, traditional carols seem
to be required entrées in mid-winter musical banquets. Yet this week, the
WOW Hall offers a splendid opportunity to simultaneously satisfy the craving for
stirring seasonal sounds as well as those music lovers whose hunger for new and unusual
music hasn't gone into hibernation. On Sunday, Dec. 9, the Bay Area-based women's
a capella nonet Kitka reprises their Wintersongs holiday concert, featuring
seasonal music from Eastern Europe and beyond.
To most of us, these songs will be unfamiliar, but in past concerts, Kitka has proved
its ability to charm even novice ears with the piquant harmonies and fascinating
rhythms of Balkan and Slavic countries such as Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, and Bosnia.
The group has researched seasonal songs from those areas and beyond, including Hebrew
Chanukah music, Eastern Orthodox sacred choral works, even Afghani tunes.
Kitka's also commissioned contemporary composers such as David
Lang and Chen Yi to write for them, so expect some original music on a winter theme
as well as some gorgeous sounds from outside the Western European tradition. Kitka's
precise harmonies and lush vocal textures enchant even listeners unfamiliar with
the music of this part of the world, and they really appeal to those who seek sounds
both unfamiliar and beautiful. This looks to be the best holiday concert this year.
If you can't get enough a capella singing, check out the Bobs,
who deck the WOW Hall on Dec. 13 with their skewed a capella renditions of unexpected
numbers like "Helter Skelter" and some wry originals. Their holiday-themed
antics have brought smiles to the WOW on previous cold midwinter evenings, so this
should be a fun one. Everyone should see the Bobs at least once, if only for proof
that strong musical skills and a sense of fun can comfortably coexist.
The WOW Hall continues to earn its reputation as the pole star
of Eugene music in December by hosting the esteemed fiddler Kevin Burke on
Friday, Dec. 7. Burke is the common element among several of my favorite Celtic music
groups: the legendary 1970s Bothy Band (which spawned a slew of notable soloists
and ensembles), Patrick Street (still going strong, and featuring recent Eugene visitor
Andy Irvine), and Open House, the group Burke formed with American musicians.
A stalwart of the leading Celtic record label, Green Linnet, Burke
is simply one of the finest and most respected folk fiddlers alive, and has worked
with musicians as diverse as Christy Moore, Kate Bush and Arlo Guthrie as well as
many of the other leading British folk and traditional musicians.
The Eugene Symphony's annual Holiday Pops Concert
hasn't generally been a font of groundbreaking music, but this year's show (on Dec.
7 at the Hult) features, in addition to the usual faves, the striking "Suite
for Violin and Orchestra" by the great African American composer, William Grant
Still. Soloist Fritz Gearhart, the UO music prof, has turned in memorable performances
of Still's accessible 20th century music in concerts at the Oregon Festival of American
music, so this is one holiday show that transcends its season.
Finally, here's a holiday gift for those who treasure two important
but underachieving institutions: our downtown mall and live music scene. A new club
called Luna opens this month next door to Adams Place on the mall and features jazz,
world, swing, and other music several nights a week. Too many downtown live music
venues have bit the mud here lately; here's hoping this moon will often be full.

Dan Bern plays Taylor's on Monday.
. |
|
Welcome back everyone! I hope you had a great holiday! Taylor's on
campus has an eclectic line-up this week. Check out Giant People Thursday. Led by
former Karl Denson's Tiny Universe player Carlos Washington, the collective offers
innovative new soul and jazz sounds. The core group thickens its sound with vocals,
percussion, dancers and multimedia.
Also at Taylor's, on Monday, will be Dan Bern. Bern tackles head on what it
means to be an American. Images and icons of the past and present, such as Marilyn
Monroe, baseball, siblings, God, love, hate -- just about anything finds a humorously
wry outlet in Bern. His iconoclastic observations and five-piece rock band backing
him up on his CD, New American Language, make him much more than just a folk
singer, while his lust for exploring all that is American roots him firmly in the
tradition of Dylanesque anthems.
Friday at the WOW fiddle master Kevin Burke performs. As
a member of influential group The Bothy Band from 1976 to 1979 among many other accomplishments,
Burke has earned a reputation as one of the greatest fiddle players ever. He appears
in support of his first solo recording in 15 years, In Concert. On Sunday,
welcome Kitka to the WOW. The women's vocal ensemble will be performing a
holiday concert of Eastern European choral music.
It's a big week for the WOW! Man or Astroman? brings their
out of this world surf rock back to town. Alas, The Astromen lost one of their comrades
in a phase shift. They now appear as a three-piece. MOAM's new CD, A Spectrum
of Infinite Scale, is a lot less sci-fi camp than past MOAM releases. Approaching
surf rock with a Devo-like intensity, whacked out whammy bars and reverb, impressive
outerspace-y sound effects and garage rock rambunctiousness has made MOAM the crowned
kings of surf for years. Tracks "Within One Universe There Are Millions"
and "Obligatory Part 2 of Song In Which There Is No Presently Existing Part
1, Nor the Plans To Make One" (!?) had even my normally staid boyfriend swaying
with the surf beat. Of course, the new one does feature prodigious knob twiddling
and sound wave tweaking. All in all, it's prime MOAM, and they always rock live,
with cool, pseudo-technological stage sets and hilarious antics, so you should definitely
go.
McDonald Theatre-goers will have a hard time deciding which night
to attend, so go to both! John Hiatt appears Sunday in support of his latest,
The Tiki Bar is Open. In a career spanning a quarter of a century, Hiatt has
produced numerous rootsy rock and blues recordings. Tiki hones in on his talented
takes on humanity and all its flaws.
Robert Cray appears Friday. Cray got his start as a young'n
in Eugene in the '70s. The three-time Grammy winner continues to inspire blues aficionados
everywhere.
That night over at John Henry's, Eugene Iowa warms up the
stage for Portland's Pinehurst Kids, along with our own Ennis Bee.
The inscrutably named Havre, Montana quartet delivers "a hybrid sound of beautiful
melodies, aggressive distortion...with influences such as The Pixies, Bob Mould,
X, and Sonic Youth." Sounds good to me!
The Pinehurst Kids have fully grown into their forlorn and ragged
punk-influenced dynamic. Their latest, Viewmaster, is an array of infectious,
unpretentious pop, dodging sappiness with a healthy amount of anger.
