THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

LUTHER WRIGHT & THE WRONGS
They came through Eugene a while back and delivered all that they'd promised: soul-shakin' country western music woven all through with Pink Floyd's 1979 rock opus The Wall. It was a fairly crowded evening full of attentive looks, and one should expect that Luther won over a passle of those concert-goers. Look for a good-sized crowd at this quality repeat performance. Wednesday, Sam Bond's Garage. —BF

ETHIC, IN NORTHWEST LYRIC FEST 4
Here's the fourth installment of the largest showcase of local Eugene hip-hop talent, bringing together not only Oregon artists but also hip-hop from as far as Sacramento and Seattle. A portion of the proceeds go to the 4J School District's music programs, and the line-up is huge. See Balou the Sasquatch, Strange Folks, The Burn UNIT, Todd-G, 10,000 Fold Form, Nelec & Mente, Light Headed (featuring Braille,) Marv Ellis, Logic, Hanif & Fury, Shortround with Kenny Wilson and more. Get'cha hip on. Friday, WOW Hall. - BF

LAURA KEMP, ROY BREWER
If you haven't had the chance to catch Kemp and Brewer do that folk voodoo that they do do so well, set your scrawny hips down on one of those soft Luna chairs. Get somethin' fruffy to drink. Relax your eyes and listen to Kemp's soft, intimate voice lull you like waves lapping the seashore; the tellings of insightful tales, some singing of contemplative stories. Hear pluckin', strummin' and bowin' by the B-man; fiddle and mandolin are his friends. Thursday, Luna. - BF

ROGER WENDOVER, IAN SMITH
Have Wendover and Smith combined their songwriting and guitar skills to make what some call the "world's smallest trio?" Is Wendover a musical genius who ran himself over with his own car? Did he win 1st place in the 1997 Willamette Valley Folk Festival's Songwriter's Competition? Does Mr. Smith play the guitar like Jackie Gleason smoked a cigar? Are they talented folk rockers? Will they ever get out of the frame? To all these questions and more, the answers are yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and no. Wednesday, Cafe Paradiso.BF

Jazz Jams
JMP at WOW and smooth Kadderly at Sweetwaters.
BY VANESSA SALVIA

Thursday the 21st the WOW Hall welcomes one of the jazz scene's most innovative ensembles to Eugene. The mandolin, that ubiquitous instrument of folk music traditions, is not commonly associated with jazz. Jamie Masefield would like to change that. Mandolin player and composer Masefield leads Burlington, Vermont-based trio the Jazz Mandolin Project, a group dedicated to challenging the notions of what the humble eight-string instrument is capable of. In talented hands, stringed instruments can complement many kinds of music, so why not jazz?

THE JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT PLAYS WOW HALL THURSDAY, NOV. 21.

Masefield composes eclectic and bouyant jams, creating his own legacy along the way. Masefield formed the project in 1993 after graduating from college. With two previous CDs to his credit, the adventure continues with the release of the new CD, After Dinner Jams, a collection of improvisational segments stemming from several hours of jam sessions.

While Masefield may do most of the group's composing, he knows where to find talented players to make his vision a reality. Joining him on the CD are Danton Boller on electric and upright bass, drummer Ari Hoenig, pianist Gil Goldstein (collaborator with Pat Metheny), Chris Lovejoy of the Charlie Hunter Band) doing percussion, and Phish veteran Jon Fishman, also on piano.

Masefield's approach to keeping the experience interesting is to ask a revolving cast of musicians to join him on tour. Perennial tour-mate Fishman will join Masefield for this WOW Hall show. Masefield and crew decorate After Dinner Jams with two non-original songs, Miles Davis's "Milestones," and the traditional spiritual "Amazing Grace."

The other seven songs are culled from some real-life "after dinner jams." The band, along with some other musicians, spent several days in mid-January 2001 snuggled in an old barn while the snow outside piled up so high that most of the crew stayed put. Days were spent working on their scripted material, while after dinner the freeform jams would commence. This funky and upbeat CD is born from that collaborative and impromptu spirit. The music is totally accessible, and will please jazz aficionados as well as neophytes.

Portland vocalist and songwriter Mary Kadderly will perform Saturday at Sweetwaters. Kadderly, also a trained pianist, has a big, gutsy voice that is perfectly suited to breezy jazz R&B and pop, as well as tender ballads. Her latest release, I Go Zoom, received the award for Best Jazz/Blues Album in the 1999 Northwest Music Awards event, which pitted her against nominees from British Columbia, Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Kadderly doesn't squander her vocal endowments covering jazz and pop standards on this CD. As good as some of those songs are, she's talented enough to write her own strong material. She composed the music for all nine of the CD's songs, and wrote the lyrics for four of those.

With the addition of songs written by some fellow songwriter friends, she has a CD of original material she can be proud of. I Go Zoom sways easily between lively songs like the title track and tender ballads like "Someday Sometime." One of the CD's most fun songs is "Sea of Love," which tells the story of an encounter with a man who "was dry as a bone but looked like he drowned," just another victim of the vicious sea of love that "never gives up her dead." As the favored topic of most popular songs, the songs on Zoom are about love: pure, simple, found, lost, and forgotten. Joining her on stage for this performance will be guitarist Dan Gildea and bassist Bill Athens. Kadderly and company will perform songs from Zoom as well as some of her favorite standards. She will also debut some material from her upcoming CD, Lucky Me.

Seasonal Variety
UO offers up smorgasbord of sounds.
BY BRETT CAMPBELL

This is the peak of the fall music season at the UO, which regularly offers the most adventurous and affordable programs of music - of many styles, periods and cultures - in Oregon. The prime pick, and a perfect introduction to the holiday season, is one of the first American period-instrument groups, the Aulos Ensemble with the dulcet-voiced soprano Julianne Baird, performing at the UO's Beall Concert Hall at 4:30 pm (that's right) on Sunday, Dec. 1.

Now reaching their third decade of performing, the members of Aulos have worked with some of the leading historically informed conductors and performers, and their Baroque Christmas concerts, a seasonal staple at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, present a lively variety of vocal and instrumental music by Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, and traditional carols. This is my top recommendation among several fine classical music offerings in town this holiday season.

The Aulos show exemplifies how the UO's Janet Stewart is gradually revitalizing the school's venerable Chamber Music Series, broadening its scope beyond the usual 19th century Germania. Last week, to augment the Prazak Quartet's performance of Dvorak's "Bagatelles," Stewart invited Eugene choreographer extraordinaire Toni Pimble to create a new piece.

Using a quartet of her Eugene Ballet dancers, Pimble responded with a lovely, classically inflected realization of the music's simple purity (much more satisfying than her similar attempt last year with Copland's music from The Red Pony). The dance enhanced an excellent show and drew a different audience from the usual chamber music crowd.

I'm not familiar with a single piece (or most of the composers) on the Nov. 21 Beall Hall program featuring four of the school's fine choral ensembles - and that's great, as the show gives listeners a chance to hear some rare gems from India, China, Hungary, Mexico and more - all in one five-dollar show!

On Saturday, Nov. 23, Future Music Oregon brings Florida electroacoustic composer James Paul Sain to perform two of his digital works. UO electronic music students will also showcase their work.

On Monday, Nov. 25, the Oregon Percussion Ensemble plays works on the timely themes of war and peace, including a piece featuring more than 100 classical and native percussion instruments that depicts Custer's Last Stand and the battle of Native Americans against the U.S. Army. The show includes a marimba quartet featuring UO grads who now play with the Eugene Symphony.

On Tuesday, Nov. 26, UO composition students will play their new music in a free concert of the Oregon Composers Forum. Other UO concerts featuring strong but seldom-heard repertoire include the Oregon Wind Ensemble on Sunday, Nov. 24 (Bach, Copland, Oregon composer Kevin M. Walczyk, and others) and the Campus Orchestra and Campus Band on the same day in a mostly 20th-century program.

And on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 3 pm on KWAX-FM, "Played in Oregon" presents a full program of original music by one of Oregon's finest composers, UO composition professor Robert Kyr, on the occasion of his 50th birthday.

Off campus, the Eugene Symphony performs Beethoven's third and eighth symphonies on Thursday, Nov. 21 at the Hult Center. New conductor Giancarlo Guerrero and new acoustics at the Silva Concert Hall both make the ESO sound great this year.

The new sound livens up the Hult, as does some innovative maneuverings by performance groups. Kudos to the fabulous young Celtic rock group Kila, who figured out a couple of weeks ago that one way to overcome the stifling atmosphere of the Hult - where the aisles must remain clear - is to invite the audience up on stage to dance, and a couple dozen of them did, making a powerful concert even more memorable.
