Newest knockout Erin McKeown plays
Sam Bond's the 22nd.

Erin McKeown knocked me out with her current CD, last fall's Distillation,
and I expect she'll knock a few of you out when she plays Sam Bond's Garage the 22nd.
The first song on this, her first CD after two cassette-only releases, "Queen
of Quiet" grabs you with her considerable gifts. It starts with some of her
sharp acoustic guitar playing, and a big, up-front vocal, dry of studio effects like
she's there in your kitchen singing to you. A shaker and some smart backing harmonies
enter appropriately and then the whole thing is over in less than two punchy minutes.
But her skills keep unfolding, as in her dirty blue electric guitar
work on "Blackbirds," where her apple-cheeked kid-sister vocals manage
to successfully negotiate the edge of coyness.
It's on "Didn't They?" that her real focus, if she has
one, reveals a Tin Pan Alley approach to songwriting 4 her voice seems authentic
and right at home, with none of that Squirrel Nut Zippers schlock.
She writes well, plays guitar well and piano effectively. On washboard
there's little she can't do. Check out her folkie guitar intro to "Dirt Gardener"
or the thrash-to-a-whisper suite of "Love in 2 Parts." All this and a freshly
minted Brown degree in ethnomusicology, to boot, for this youngster. This is a big
hearty hello from a major new talent. Get in on the ground floor. Boston folker Peter
Mulvey shares the bill.
This Week: Portland's Higher Ground comes to Taylor's the
18th with a new live CD in tow, Sandstorm. Alan Glickenhaus has added two
new members to his popular jamgrass band, guitarist John Ostrom and drummer Jeremy
Kaplan. Look for thoughtfully arranged mandolin, banjo and fiddle-dominated tunes,
well suited to the elbow-pumping overalled. Boston folk stalwart Bill Staines,
a singer-songwriter who has been part of the scene since the early '60s, will be
at St. Mary's Episcopal Church the 18th. Staines is also a champion yodeler, so be
prepared. And speaking, as we were at one point, of new CDs, fusioneers LAZOO
have a new one out, Audio Geography, which they'll celebrate at the Wild
Duck the 19th. The band digs in especially on the cut "Saturday," helped
by a guest appearance from Captain Beefheart guitarist and Eugene music instructor
Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo), and on drummer Edwin Coleman III's affecting "Brown
Skin Sun." Also on the 19th, Michael Franti and Spearhead play a benefit
at the McDonald Theatre, preceded by a free lecture by Stephen Zunes on human rights
and arms control. The Paul deLay Band is at the Wild Duck the 20th. Their
latest CD is Heavy Rotation. Slack-key guitarist Keola Beamer is at
the WOW Hall the 20th. His wife, hula-ist Moanalani Beamer will join him.
Still more on the 20th, with folker Lucy Kaplansky playing Cafe Paradiso,
along with Alice Peacock. Kaplansky's latest work is the very enjoyable CD
Every Single Day. Allette Brooks, a singer-songwriter whose environmentalism
extends to the act of shipping her stuff in a section of re-used, inside-out FedEx
cardboard, is at Sam Bond's the 21st, along with Laura Kemp and Brian Cutean,
in a writers-in-the-round arrangement. A sample from her latest CD Swim With Me
contains the song "Rolling Blackout," wherein she castigates "energy
hogs." You might want to leave the SUV home this time. Also on the 21st, Los
Folkloristas, who play music from 15 different countries on more than 100 instruments
(but I don't think simultaneously) will give a tour of the sounds of Latin America
at the Hult Center.
