THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

  Dave Van Ronk
A regular in the Greenwich Village scene throughout the '60s, Van Ronk has showed a depth of creativity allowing him to traipse through the changing music genres of time. Friday, Cafe Paradiso.

  Culture
Joseph Hill is the frontman of this classic Jamaican trio, and considered by some to be a prophet. His lyrics are passionate, historical, and irie. Though some of the longest-standing reggae groups match Culture in depth of roots, few surpass them. Monday, McDonald Theatre.

  Jerry Joseph
He's played a bunch with the Jackmormons, but this week he jams with Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets. Thursday, Sam Bond's Garage.

Blues & Urban Cowboys
Too much to pick from this week.

Dave Van Ronk is a living legend of NYC's early '60s folk scene. He began his recording career with Folkways more than 40 years ago, buddied with and even roomed with Dylan, and gained renown as a preservationist and archivist of the blues, blending his jazz and folk leanings into a musical entity that remains vibrant today. He is at Cafe Paradiso the 5th, with Walker T. Ryan opening. Van Ronk was a merchant seaman when he was advised to take his music pro by Odetta. He still lives in Greenwich Village and teaches guitar when he isn't touring and performing.

Cult favorite Chris Whitley, who plays the WOW Hall the 10th, just might make it out of the shadows with his latest, seventh CD, Rocket House. This luminous work, graced by guests including DJ Logic, Bruce Hornsby, Dave Matthews and Badal Roy, is awash in Indian textures and funky grooves, such as the urban cowboy lope of "Say Goodbye." Space cowboy Whitley insinuates electronic bleeps into the heavily dobrod "Serve You" and a seasoning of tabla into "Little Torch," leaving Rocket House with a delicious unstuck in time, or space, for that matter, feeling. The CD artwork is based on photographs of monolithic glass skyscrapers, with an unsettling import that couldn't have been imagined when it was designed.

This Week: The 4th brings former Meat Puppet Curt Kirkwood to Sam Bond's Garage, along with Jerry Joseph. Dave Matthews buddy Tim Reynolds does the singer-songwriter thing at the WOW Hall the 5th. The Photon Band of Girdwood, Alaska, bring their "cosmic bluegrass funk" to Rascal's the 6th. Now that's a long drive. Bill Kreutzman's band House of Spirits recently opened for the Photons at a benefit concert on Kauai, during an Hawaiian tour.

Norma Fraser holds a CD release for her latest reggae offering C'mon Baby the 6th at Taylor's. Also on the 6th, Beastie Boys DJ Mixmaster Mike is at the WOW Hall, with Swollen Members opening.

The 7th finds an Indiegrrl Records Showcase at Sam Bond's, with Holly Figueroa, Erika Luckett, Kellee Bradley, Stacey Board and Liz Queler. These women are all on the recently formed cooperative label founded by Figueroa. She started playing guitar in mid-1999, and has already been at such folk bastions as NYC's Bitter End, Boston's Club Passim and featured on "All Things Considered." Luckett spent nine years in the fusion group Wild Mango, and has scored for film, including the Oscar-nominated documentary Untold Stories. Queler's Indiegrrl CD No Small Wonder features guest appearances from Cliff Eberhardt, Lucy Kaplansky and many others. Bradley has opened for Jo Dee Messina, Christopher Cross, John Mellencamp and more, playing before 20,000 at the Gorge and 45,000 singing the national anthem before a Mariners game. I think were dealing with heavyweights here.

Old Bobby Dylan is at OSU's Gill Coliseum the 7th, touring on his new, well-received Love and Theft. The insurgent country, and I've waited years to use that term, of the Old 97's is at the WOW Hall the 9th, with Mini Bar opening. Bay Area guitarist and composer Will Bernard is at Taylor's the 11th. Bernard has been active in the jazz, hip hop and world music scenes, gaining some prominence in the band T.J. Kirk, along with Charlie Hunter. Bernard's 4-tet and 5-tet have played the North Sea, Monterey and Montreal Jazz Festivals and opened for Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Medeski, Martin & Wood and others. His current band, Motherbug, is heavy on the B-3 propelled R&B.

Claiming Victory
Pass Out Kings triumph with a CD release party.
By Ben Fogelson

Dave Macrorie, Ken Holst, ScottK, Reed Gilchrist and Jivan are Pass Out Kings.
.

The phone rang and it was Reed Gilchrist, the Fu Man Chu'ed lead singer of Eugene's punk band, Pass Out Kings. I jerked to attention, spilling music mags from my bedspread.

I'd imagined the frontman of a deafening punk band would have a cannonball voice, but it was more Jerry than Tom.

"We did it, man. The CD is out," he squeaked. I rubbed my eyes, wondering at this.

Then came the sound of a comatose sea lion crashing into a pile of empty beer cans. Someone grabbed the phone on the way down, guitarist SkottK, and the story began --

At 10 pm Oct. 6 at John Henry's, the Pass Out Kings will emerge with We Claim Victory, a CD release designed to catapult; a musical amalgamation destined to lift punk eyebrows on a nationwide brow.

Sick and tired of not getting paid
But I've still got plenty to say. No
One's kickin' down the door to
Sign us, guess we'll do it our way.

-- We Claim Victory

And they do it their own way. Their mojo's a combination of past practices and present predilections. POK's double-guitar onslaught was created by ScottK and Ken Holst while playing together for years in a punk band called Dogwater. Drummer Jivan's sticks have polished plenty of drum-skins over the years playing with Thresher, Kpants and Peter Wilde, and bass master Dave Macrorie's skills were sired by many moons of low-pitched plucking for Eugene's own blues/jazz group, Boogie Chillin'. Reed Gilchrist himself goes way back to San Fran where he played with Circle One among the 1980s punk greats. But it's Reed's current vision of POK that's a necessary social epoxy for an already tight group of friends pressing their musical stamp on a region.

"This is the best band I've been with in my life," says Reed. "Others may have been more famous, but not as good. No way."

After coming out with a self-released, self-titled CD in '99, the POKs have played alongside punk biggies like Bad Brains, Suicidal Tendencies and Poison Idea, but it never kept them from performing on more diverse local bills, including high school bands and other up-and-comers, proving their love for Eugene and their desire to keep its music scene growing.

"We love Eugene," ScottK says. "Our lives are here. Other bands move away as stepping stones and become unhappy." All of the POKs are raising families and working in Eugene, determined to stay together until they make their mark from home.

"I'd rather make this the cool town," says Gilchrist.

And looking at the steps they've taken so far, they are making it.

Every single cent of proceeds from their first CD stayed in a drawer until it could go into the making of We Claim Victory. It's become the essence of POK's five diligent years together creating working man's punk. New songs espousing passion for their uncompromised music, highlighting their disgust with hypocrisy, and a humorous cry concerning expected fatherhood grace the silvery doughnut. All the tracks are fast and don't pull any punches.

"Our music's about anger and issues, things that make us laugh," says Reed, "Punk has to be brave. You've got to lay it on the line, to mean it. There needs to be danger."

We Claim Victory will be the available highlight of an evening full of familiar junts and hidden surprises. POK aren't asking for recognition, but they're going to get it. Soon the punk nation will find itself looking in the direction of Eugene's loyal Kings.
