Women composers have always had it tough in the male-dominated music
biz, notwithstanding the few exceptions (e.g. Hildegard of Bingen, Fanny Mendelssohn)
who had the connections to bust the lace ceilings of their times. In 1920s Paris,
Germaine Tailleferre found a place among Les Six, the group of young populist/radical
composers who were shaking up the German-dominated music of the time.
Alas, she was overshadowed by her male colleagues Poulenc, Milhaud,
Auric, and Honegger. But her intentionally simple, harmonically conservative music,
ranging from playful to wistful to more potent, is charming. I've never heard her
Piano Concerto #2, which is about to make its recording debut courtesy of
the acclaimed pianist Walter Prossnitz.
Prossnitz impressed many local listeners last year when he performed
with the Oregon Mozart Players. He's returned to open the OMP's new season next weekend
(Oct. 6 and 7) and will treat us to a live performance of Tailleferre's concerto,
a 20th century rarity. It's another coup for the Players, who keep showing how it's
possible to combine a classical orientation with more recent yet worthy music.
Prossnitz will also play one of Bach's great harpsichord concertos
on a modern piano, which, unfortunately, usually deprives Bach's orchestral music
of the clarity and texture of the original instruments. The program also includes
Sibelius's "Valse Triste," Mozart's tasty Symphony No. 34 and "Le
Tombeau de Couperin," Ravel's lilting, melancholy tribute to both the French
Baroque and his fallen friends in World War I.
Another fine virtuoso making a welcome return engagement is Shira
Kammen, the veteran early music performer who appeared here in 1999's Roman de
Silence. She returns Tuesday, Oct. 9 to the UO's Gerlinger Alumni Lounge with
singer Mary Anne Azéma in a program of music in praise of the Virgin Mary
called Étoile du Nord -- Marvels and Miracles in Medieval France.
Kammen's mastery of period instruments such as harp, vielle, and
rebec complement Azéma's passionate (though authentic -- no 19th century prima
donna stylings here) vocals. They've made dozens of critically acclaimed recordings
with many of the all-star bands of early music: Sequentia, Hesperion XX, the Boston
Camerata, the King's Noyse and more.
The dance season opens on Friday, Sept. 28, when New York choreographer/dancer
Bryan Hayes presents his latest work-in-progress, set to Steve Reich's shimmering
"Sextet" and featuring dancers Jennifer Knight Dills, Pollyanna Lind and
Rebecca Le Duc from The Performance Project, the new dance collective in town. Hayes
also will present excerpts of his dance and videographic fusions in a semi-formal
theater setting in the Dougherty Dance Theater, UO.
In last week's season overview, I inadvertently managed to delete
my praise of the Eugene Opera's decision to initiate a new series of American operas,
commencing with Carlisle Floyd's Appalachian epic, Susannah, next March. And
speaking of American music, congrats to the Eugene Symphony for a, uh, striking start
to the music season with William Kraft's Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra.
The virtuoso showcase piece boasted some thrilling moments as well as a couple of
tedious patches, and percussionist Charles Dowd really nailed the solos, showing
especial sensitivity and nuance in the melancholy, otherworldly second movement.
It's commendable to see the ESO programming a contemporary work
by an American composer, and heartening to hear so much applause following it. In
fact, almost every time our local music institutions have played unfamiliar, even
challenging works (such as OFAM's electric presentation of George Antheil's Ballet
Mecanique last summer), Eugene audiences respond positively -- a sign of our
listeners' openness to new musical vistas. I treasure the classics that the ESO,
OMP and our other fine ensembles offer this community. But it sure is refreshing
every once in a while to walk into a concert hall not knowing what you're going to
hear -- and to be pleasantly surprised when it's so exciting.

Send the kids packing before 10
pm show of the ever popular Bindlestiffs. Thursday the 27th, WOW Hall.
. |
|
Let the weekend begin on Thursday! The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus returns
for the fifth time to the WOW Hall Thursday, Sept. 27 with not one but two riotous
performances. An early show at 7:30 pm is suitable for the whole family, while the
10 pm show is, seriously, for adults only. Voted "Best Non-Musical Performance"
by WOW audiences, the Cirkus is not exactly Barnum and Bailey. There are no regular
performers each year, save for the brother and sister duo Keith and Stephanie who
began performing together as fire dancers.
This year's events include sword swallower Mr. Pennygaff, Lady
Philomena wielding the precision bullwhip, and aerial acts of death-defying bravery.
Also, live music, ribald humor and much more. Past events at the children's show
have included a shadow puppet story, dancing, singing and other sensational sideshows.
Another feature attraction of the Cirkus is the Autonomadic Bookmobile, which proffers
a wide selection of "subversive and perversive" titles. This year the Bookmobile
has upgraded from a table and will be operating from a real motor vehicle!
Don't forget '80s vinyl! Spinning every Thursday, only at John
Henry's. Friday at John Henry's includes Corvallis's Nautical Sauce Posse.
I know, you're thinking Nautical wha--? Just like I did the first time I heard it,
but the name actually makes sense, if you're schooled in Posse speak. Thusly: Nautical,
for their "fluid, and ever changing" style of music. Sauce, as in adding
some flavor, er, flava. And Posse, because they are a determined group. There, now
don't you feel better? NSP just might be the closest thing we have to a prog-rocker's
dream come true ... think catchy metal, funk and jazz melded with iconoclastic rock
such as Zappa or King Crimson. Boise's Bovalexia are an energetic power trio
offering up garage-y feedback, grungy guitar, intense vocals and a lot of rock and
roll. Eugene's Point Blank Rangers will kick start your heart this evening.
Saturday evening you can visit the grand McDonald Theatre and witness
Pink Floyd's epic The Wall performed in its entirety by area musicians. Over
at the Wild Duck catch a "Return From Legitimacy Reunion Concert" by Eugene's
Dopplegang, along with Spirit Farm. Members Patric Miller (guitar,
mandolin, vocals), Brian Price (electric fiddle), Brad Rosen (drums), Peter Bach
(guitar vocals), Jeremy Gibbons (bass) and Frank Sprouse (lead guitar) are well remembered
for their rollicking, roots rock and extended jams. Dopplegang was once a much-loved
fixture of the local jam rock scene, with members culled from some of the region's
best bands, including Little Women and The Jackmormons (Rosen), Nine Days Wonder,
Boogie Patrol Express (Gibbons) and Old and in the Way (Price). Price also plays
fiddle with Spirit Farm.
If there's any among you who don't get excited by a big brass jazz
and funk band then don't go to Taylor's Sunday! New Orleans born and bred ReBirth
Brass Band has a definite effect on your backside ... it makes it want to move!
Big brass rhythms just percolate right into your heart and soul. New Orleans has,
of course, a long tradition of brass bands, and ReBirth is keeping that tradition
alive, albeit with a contemporary vocabulary. Rebirth is here to party!
Forget the name Lolly. Now it's all about Man of The Year.
As a Portland pop-rock quartet, MOTY pull elements of glam, Brit-rock, synth-pop
and radio-friendly '60s and '70s pop for a polished performance at John Henry's Sunday.
Also at John Henry's, prepare for an 8 pm early show Oct. 4 with Pedro the Lion,
Starflyer 59 and Seldom.
