Susan McKeown performs at 8:30pm
Friday, Broadway Plaza Stage.

Ah, autumn. As the temperature begins to cool, the music scene heats
up to compensate. After the utter lameness of the music offerings at the Lane County
Fair, it's nice to see a couple of real winners coming to town for the Eugene Celebration.
Friday night features an essential concert for fans of Celtic music, women's music,
folk music, and everything in between.
We're lucky to have Susan McKeown with her band, the Chanting
House, appearing here so often -- she has family in the area. The Dublin-born, New
York-based Celtic chanteuse has enchanted audiences here several times, and she's
poised to break through to the big time, having recently signed to the premier Celtic
music label, Green Linnet. She's also appeared on PBS with Natalie Merchant and toured
with the great Scots fiddler Johnny Cunningham. Her rich, classically trained voice
caresses her own progressive Celtic songs as well as traditional material, so don't
pigeonhole McKeown as merely an Irish balladeer -- she's one of the finest singers
to emerge in the last decade.
It's hard for me to be objective about the Austin Lounge Lizards,
who slither into the Celebration on Saturday night; after all, they played my wedding.
(Come to think of it, though, they did eat more than their share of the barbecue.)
They're a perfect band for Eugene, as their song titles alone reveal: "Get A
Haircut, Dad," "Jesus Loves Me (But He Can't Stand You)" "Acid
Rain," "Highway Café of the Damned." (The latter is Sartre's
"No Exit" set in a diner -- "Waitress, waitress, bring me some Kafka
...")
There's also a song that somehow juxtaposes stock car racer Richard
Petty with avant-garde filmmaker Luis Buñuel. After two decades of sly, satirical
slams at the likes of Reagan and Quayle, their humorous touch has lightened even
as their bluegrass chops have strengthened; one thing that's often overlooked amid
the laughter at their twisted lyrics is just what accomplished musicians these guys
are. Their real reverence for genuine country music heroes (evident in paens to George
Jones and Hank Williams as well as barbs aimed at pretenders, such as "Put the
Oak Ridge Boys in the Slammer") somehow exists side by side with a bluegrass
version of Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage," ("The lunatic is on the grass/
-- doink doink d-doink doink doink --). My favorite Lizard vision is "He's Just
a Friend," the hilarious tale of a hapless cuckold who's just beginning to suspect
the truth about his wife and her, uh, buddy:
Our kids all call him Daddy; they refer to me as Sir
In all our family pictures he is standing next to her
For Christmas he bought her a pair of handcuffs and a whip
Sometimes I think it's put a strain on our relationship....
By the way, besides the big names on the stages, don't forget the
local heroes and buskers who'll be taking music to the streets during the Celebration.
In fact, at the Heron Building (6th & Olive), classical guitarist David Rogers
threatens to host an intermittent, Salon des Refusés-style gig by local players
not booked for the official lineup.
From the ridiculers to the sublime -- the Eugene Symphony
kicks off music director Miguel Harth-Bedoya's final season Thursday, Sept. 20 in
fine style with a rarely heard contemporary American piece, William Kraft's "Concerto
for Timpani and Orchestra," featuring UO percussion master Charles Dowd. Nice
to see first the Oregon Festival of American Music (in last month's "Ballet
Mecanique") and now the ESO taking advantage of Dowd's vast knowledge of the
percussion repertoire, which tends to be about as cutting edge as contemporary classical
music gets.
Kraft, the long-time percussionist and composer-in-residence with
the Los Angeles Philharmonic, writes colorful, 1970s-style modernist music. Now a
professor at UC-Santa Barbara, he studied with Henry Cowell, conducted music of Lou
Harrison and other great contemporary composers, recorded and performed in dozens
of world premieres and received commissions from the likes of the Kronos Quartet
as well as a slew of awards and honors for his compositions.
The concert also features the inevitable chestnut (this time it's
Tchaikovsky's lush Fifth Symphony) for traditionalists. Add Marquez's "Conga,"
and it should be a big-beat night at the symphony.
