Badenya
Les Freres Coulibaly
"Griot," pronounced in the back of the throat sans
the "t," is performed by this troupe of oral historians from Burkina Faso,
Africa. They drum, dance, sing and play a variety of instruments from djembe and
balafon to sabar and the doumdoum. Throw in the modern guitar, bass and keyboards,
and you've got rockin' djembe music.Tuesday,
the WOW Hall. |

John Hammond
This bluesman's new album, Wicked Grin, produced
by Tom Waits, is a tribute to that musician's experimental blues approach. Hammond
lays his Mississippi Delta stylings over Waits' songs with an equal amount of eccentric
uniqueness. Monday, Wild Duck. |

Samite plays WOW Hall
Sunday, Aug. 26.

|
African music absolutely invades town this week, as a host of acts
on their way to or from Portland State University's Homowo Festival of African Arts
stop for appearances here. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Samite
brings his music to the WOW Hall the evening of the 26th. On his CD Silina
Musango, Samite delivers a very tranquil and engaging sound. Samite comes from
Uganda and came up during the Idi Amin years, when he had a brother taken away and
eventually had to flee for his own life.
Though Samite was already an established musician finding popularity
playing Western covers, it wasn't until he settled in Kenya that he began to explore
his own African musical heritage. He'd learned to play flute and kalimba, and soon
added the seven-stringed Kenyan harp, the litungu. Samite has lived in the U.S. for
the past 15 years and considers himself an ambassador for the sounds of Africa, which
he enjoys spreading among new audiences.
The 25th brings the West African drum and dance of Foli Kan
to the Wild Duck. On the 28th, it's Badenya Les Freres Coulibay at the WOW
Hall. This family band bases its music on the traditional Bwaba sounds of homeland
Burkina Faso, with a percussion-rich djembe-centered sound on the CD Seniwe.
Their griot music promotes sharing and communal feeling, emphasizing the African
proverb "You can't pick up the flour with one finger."
This week: Tonight, the 23rd, Visible Men and the talented
Matt the Electrician are at Sam Bond's. Somewhat psycho bluegrass from our
old Midwestern friends Split Lip Rayfield is at John Henry's the 24th. Also
on the 24th, Paul Safar and Lori Deskin are at Cafe Paradiso. Paul
Safar and the Consort, which features Deskin on harmony vocals, have a new CD out,
This Little City. Surf guitarist Jack Johnson is at the Wild Duck the
25th, with Ben Lee opening. The all-female rock of Edmonton, Alberta's Painting
Daisies is at Cafe Paradiso, also the 25th.
Still more on the 25th, with the funk, gospel and R&B of NYC's
The Holmes Brothers at the Cuthbert. The Brothers spent years as downtown
stars, and have lately been getting bigger and bigger. Their current CD, Speaking
in Tongues, was produced by Joan Osborne. Their take on Ben Harper's "Homeless
Child" features a badass guitar hook from brother Wendell that won't let up.
On the 26th, singer-songwriters Thais Perkins and Arin
Simonian share the bill at Sam Bond's Garage. Perkins is a Lousianian by way
of Corvallis, and Simonian hails from the Bay Area, where she also plays guitar and
sings in the funk band Jawbone. Simonian sent along a CD single of her song "I
Wanna Grow Old" (and some of us envy her that future tense), where her vocals
slither about quite saucily.
The 27th brings bluesman John Hammond to the Wild Duck.
Hammond's latest CD, Wicked Grin, features Tom Waits songs for 12 of its 13
cuts, and Waits produced the record, to boot. The Plaehn and Hino Blues Band
opens. Barbara Manning and the Go-Luckys are a power trio built on Manning's
cranky compositions, which she sings fairly deadpan against some old-school punk
backing on the band's latest You Should Know By Now. They play the
27th at Sam Bond's.
Shanti Groove, yet another bluegrassin' acoustic jam outfit
from Colorado, lays its tidy mandolin and guitar work on Taylor's the 28th. The
Moody Blues performs the 28th at the Cuthbert. The 30th delivers a fine evening
of Hawaiian slack key guitar, with Led Ka'apana and Cyril Pahinui playing
the WOW Hall. Kaapana's latest, Black Sand, spills over with this lush and
lovely gentle style and just a smidge of Kaapana's mellow vocal work. Pahinui's Night
Moon likewise continues the rich tradition of ki ho alu Hawaiian guitar.
