THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

  Bugs Henderson
Bugsy ripped these chords in the last days of the infamous Vet's Club. His last ride in the Taxi a hundred and eighty days ago, the audience was buzzed by a hundred and eighty minutes of non-stop shredding from blues to Kravitz. Thursday, Hollywood Taxi.

  TR Kelley
Helping to christen a reborn venue, TR Kelley takes the stage to deliver her soulful and sincere power acoustic art. Saturday, Cafe Paradiso.

  Yellow Man
Yellowman's reggae has evolved over the last 20 years fromtoughness to greater consciousness. He's dropped south from Washington performances at the World of Music and Dance Festival, and he should be warmed up and ready to toast some roots dancehall reggae. Monday,
Wild Duck
.

Brass and Bugs
Hot and cool rhythms spice up the week.
By Ben Fogelson

"Bring the Wagon Over Here!" The Pass Out Kings, Unscene Magazine benefit, Friday, John Henry's.
.

The Youngblood Brass Band's pulling up to Taylor's Bar and Grill this Friday. Some of the band's long-distance calls should put 'em in touch with Madison, Wis., where Blood evolved from the genre of brasshop into what some claim they are today, a conglomeration of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and New Orleans rhythms spiked with the attitude of rap. Nat McIntosh on sousaphone and Dave Skogen on snare lead the octet into a labyrinth of horns over hip-hop at the campus watering hole.

The same night 10 blocks closer to the sea, visit the grand re-opening celebration of Café Paradiso, where ol' Don Latarski and Rue de Blues put the club/café's new digs through its paces. Don "Guitarski" Latarski can be found at Jo Fed's most weeks, filing his gentle axe-jazz down to a non-offensive background buzz. Under a magnifying glass, one sees that The Don's guitaring hails from a skill set way above the common musical echelon, and the clarity of his strums, plucks and slides are convincing testimonials.

You hear the one about a punk band called The Pass Out Kings, a bar named John Henry's, and an Unscene alternative magazine benefit? The Big-lunged lead singer Reed Gilcrist orders a Sarsaparilla in a high, wispy tenor, but then clambers up on stage and roars like he's been giving voice lessons to the late Sam Kinneson. Two electric guitars fire with precision, and the dangly thing in the back of Reed's throat vibrates for all to see. Flanked by Rock 'n Roll Skue and The Secretions, the Pass Outs pound some hard punk late into Friday night at John Henry's.

The Wild Duck's been reggae-strong, first with Pulse and the reggae-god Toots, and now Yellowman, Jamaica's "Mr. Sexy." All respect to Yellow, who's played roots-influenced reggae for years, and whose Jamaican-style toasting is honest and inspired, but Jesus, "Mr. Sexy?" They call him that from the Indies to Indiana, and all I can say is if that if I ever go on tour, can Yellowman be my PR man? Yellowman gets brutal Monday night at the Duck.

At the WOW Hall, Tin Lizzie opens for Portland Judas Priest tribute band British Steel. In 1995, British Steel's head dude Brian Allen was opening at the Roseland with British, then called Father Mary. A second act turned up missing and instead of repeating a set, Father Mary rolled off the Priest album Electric Eye. The crowd supposedly went ape-shit, and the freshly birthed British Steel cried "ma-ma!" If you like Priest--blah, blah. British Steel plays Saturday at the WOW Hall.

Also this week is the Leila Chieko Trio, with Mark Alan and Ashleigh Flynn. Leila's a soft and feisty singer/songwriter, guitar strap tightened just right. In the past she's drummed it up while front-woman Flynn gets busy, but now Leila too uses the mic to woo the masses. The CD GarageproEP is scalding off the press, and celebrated at the show. That's Friday pm at Sam Bond's Garage.

Bugs Henderson returns after a six-month hiatus to give the Springfield music fans another six-string scathing. Bugger's a versatile guitar maestro; his sets range from blues to jazzabilly to swing to rock. Henderhoney's played alongside the best in the world, and he's picked up some pretty good tricks. Once I hear Clapton asked him if he might borrow a pick. The Bugger can be found performing what some have called, "the history of American guitar performed with love, balls and a lot of wacky humor," Thursday night at the Hollywood Taxi.
