This Week's Calendar | Galleries

festival: This year's Filbert Festival features family fun, fireworks and fine tunes for three days at Island Park in Springfield. Come get hooked at a fly-fishing casting demonstration, or wiggle your toes in a simulated beach complete with sea shells. Look hard enough and you might just find a chocolate-covered nut. With the festival offering food, art, children's activities and even a band called Backbeat, all you need is love. See Friday Calendar.

spiritual: In 1961, Richard Alpert (aka Ram Dass), collaborated with Timothy Leary in research of LSD-25 and other psychedelic chemicals in an exploration of human consciousness. Dass, author of Be Here Now, suffered a stroke in 1997. Now he uses this experience to explore the spiritual dimensions of suffering and the nature of the aging process. He speaks Aug. 4 at the Masonic Center. See Saturday Calendar.

3visual arts: Fifty-five individuals marked themselves with a "new life" tattoo in solidarity with Lisa Caldwell, a 19-year-old woman who died in 1997 of a rare cancer. Continuation, a collection of prints at White Lotus Gallery, the vision of photographer Kent Peterson, embraces Caldwell's life and death and the spirit that unites us all. See Art in the Galleries.
