THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

  Nicole Campbell
Acoustic pop songstress Nicole Campbell has been a staple of the Portland music scene for over a decade now. She's in town to celebrate the release of her newest record, Songs from the Red Room. FRIDAY, SAM BOND'S.

  Tony Trischka
Trischka's shows are a mix of bluegrass, old time, popular, classical and original music. Audience members may find themselves singing along with "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," imitating swamp creatures as an introduction to "Bullfrog Shuffle," or chosing a key for Trischka to improvise in. Trischka's 30 year career brings him to Eugene this week. SUNDAY, TAYLOR'S.

  Ashley Raines
Raines is originally from New York, but for the past three years he's been living on the road. His current layover in Eugene gives us a chance to check out his soulful acoustic music and dream about being a gypsy. WEDNESDAY, CAFE PARADISO.

Matt the Electrician lights up the Country Fair on Friday.

Another venue bites the dust, with the recent closing of Theo's Jazz Club, and we are all the poorer.

On the Country Fair front, which happens this weekend, I know this much: Matt the Electrician, a very talented guy who used to be based in Corvallis, but now works out of Austin, will be there solo the 13th. And among the OCF acts who'll be playing in-town gigs are Seattle's Circus Contraption, at John Henry's the 16th. The Circus sent along its CD, Our Latest Catalogue. Suitably circus-y with plenty of tuba and clarinet, some glockenspiel, and much creepy laughing, screaming and oddball sounds. The lyrics conjure up a leering Joel Grey in Cabaret, as they deal with subjects like witch roasting, etc. This will give you a good case of the willies, like you felt comfortable at the circus in the first place. And live, they promise "A six-foot Amazonian Dung Beetle," among other treats.

Chris Chandler & Anne Feeney: A Wandering Minstrel Show & Flying Poetry Circus will land at Sam Bond's Garage the 16th. Chandler's poetry, attacking the "fast food attitudes" of "the United States of Generica" has brought him into spheres as disparate as those of Allen Ginsberg and Ani DiFranco. Protest singer Feeney's music is featured in the Susan Sarandon-narrated film This Is What Democracy Looks Like, on the 1999 Seattle WTO protests, and performed by Peter, Paul & Mary.

Saturday Market continues this Saturday, with jazz at 1:30 pm, from The Michael Denny All Stars. Two shows coming up this week in the free Summer Concerts in the Parks series, both at 6:30 pm, are fusioneers Lazoo at Washington/Jefferson Park the 17th, and folk songstress Mare Wakefield at Westmoreland Community Center the 19th. No glass or alcohol. Thank you so much, picnickers.

This Week: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who go by BRMC, are at the Hollywood Taxi the 12th. The Virgin Records press person who called me about this show declared the band "So cool they should probably be on an indie label." Portland's Nicole Campbell will have a CD release for her new Songs from the Red Room at Sam Bond's the 13th. The former singer for Ivan's Wish has teamed with producer Tony Lash (Heatmiser, Dandy Warhols) here, and he gives her modern rock an ultracontemporary production. My favorite line from the promotional spiel accompanying the CD: "Campbell gives voice to the sentient cornerstones of life most of us leave taciturn." Um, huh?

The "cello-pop-rock" of San Francisco's The Fingers is at Cafe Paradiso the 14th. Banjo titan Tony Trischka, who Bela Fleck has credited as a major inspiration, will play a solo show of "newgrass" at Taylor's the 15th. Mome Raths, IQU and FCS North are at John Henry's the 15th.

The Madison, Wisconsin band Hum Machine takes to the tiny environs of the Tiny Tavern the 16th, but it promises to be a show worth wedging yourself into. The band's latest, fourth CD No Joy In Mudville is a varied collection of supple rock that just keeps getting better as you make your way through it. "10,000 More Times" (apparently being used in a Miller Genuine Draft commercial, alas) bristles with anger vocally, lyrically and in their playing. And they play well -- check out the interplay on "Single Hound." "Open Your Pie Hole," they command elsewhere, and it doesn't seem to be cobbler coming your way. Touchingly, the band even included a press clip from The Badger Herald. These guys rock.

Speaking of good bands in small places, Counting Crows will be at Portland's Schnitzer Hall the 17th, doing a Western mini-tour of "small" venues -- mostly a bunch of wineries -- while recording a new album. Listen for new material at these shows. Ashley Raines brings his finely crafted, powerful folk to Cafe Paradiso the 18th, as well as Out of the Fog on the 28th and Aug. 4th. His These Haunted Streets boasts nice guitar work and strong singing as well. The Motet is at the Wild Duck the 18th.
