This Week's Calendar | Galleries

festival: The Oregon Country Fair, July 13-15, features a dozen stages, eclectic music, international food booths, jugglers, clowns, speakers, singers, magicians, marionettes and so much more. Forest paths, areas, meadows, lawns, stages, tree houses, tents, towers and parks, all intertwining, invite kids and adults with a thousand entertaining sights around each crook. See Friday Calendar.

visual arts: Locally based photojournalist Eric Gran photographed clients and volunteers at a drug treatment and needle exchange clinic in the Fruitvale district of Oakland, California. He taped a black cloth to a stairwell lit from above by sunlight, so his subjects could speak for themselves beyond their immediate environment. Casa Segura, a show of his works, runs through July 31 at the Hilyard Allan Bros. Beanery. See Art in the Galleries.

3spoken word: Alix Olson is an internationally acclaimed spoken word poet, author and speaker. Lately she's been all over the mass media, including CNN. "Alix Olson is a red-hot, fire-bellied, feminismo-spewin' volcano," says Alison Bechdel, of Dykes to Watch Out For. Olson, promoting her debut CD Built Like That, will read from her new book and CD, Only the Starving Favor Peace, at 7 pm this Monday at Mother Kali's Bookstore. She plays the Country Fair at noon, Friday, at Blue Moon Stage; 1 pm Saturday at Chela Mela Meadow; and at 1:35 pm Sunday at Mainstage. See Monday Calendar.
