This Week's Calendar | Galleries

arts/visual: Art and the Vineyard wraps its wine-drenched, smiling arms around Alton Baker Park for three days of melodious wanderings supported by a family atmosphere, musical exhalations of agreeable sounds, and a plethora of planned distractions. Said diversions range from storytellers and hands-on arts activities for the dear tots, to numerous stages bearing happy musicians brought from near and not-too-distant realms, to wordsmiths aplenty who explain their volumes of published books, to blood-sugar raising booths, both savory and sweet, and don't forget the labyrinth of art-works on exhibit and for sale. Twenty-seven total hours that one can ramble, roaming through the floating dandelion fluff from event to event, dragging 10 toes, two wheels, and maybe even an overladen belly through the riverside grass of the Willamette. Here's Wild Magnolias, outrageous New Orleans funksters, who play Saturday evening on the main stage. See Friday Calendar.

music: Rilling's the one. Everyone knows he's the one. Forget all of his wonderful achievements and just look at his picture; he's the epitome of a famous conductor, and Eugene is fortunate to have him nesting here again. Helmuth Rilling's practically synonymous with the Oregon Bach Festival, which winds itself up this weekend with a rapturous climax of Verdi Requiem on Sunday, July 8. This Requiem mass, composed by Giuseppe Verdi upon the expiration of his revered countryman poet Manzoni, is heralded to contain all the creative soul and power of this once-great Italian composer. This week features Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem, conducted by Rilling, and later in the week Robert Levin, who jigs his digits across the 88 zebra-keys during a passionate performance of Brahm's Eight Pieces for Piano, and more. See Thursday Calendar.

3music: Ani Difranco is a brilliant super-nova; lucky to exist in this shared universe, but well deserved to shine so brightly, as her hard-work and persistence attests. Having started up her own label, Righteous Babe Records, now Difranco may hold a high level of power over her own musical destiny as compared to the thousands of artists out there who don't sign as many contracts with … themselves. She's playing the Cuthbert Amphitheater this Monday, offering her marvelous giggles, giving her broad ruby smile, sending sincerity from the middle of her own expansive presence. See Monday Calendar.
