music: Nestled at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, the Dexter State Recreation Area sits alongside the spectacular Dexter Lake reservoir. This weekend, if instruments were to spray out color in addition to notes, overjoyed rainbows would be streaking across the water from shores of green. The Dexter Lake Music Festival would see to it. Along with music from start to finish of this weekend-long event, the grassy slopes will be decked with showcases, workshops, art exhibits, and some of the tenderest vittles this side of the Mississippi. Among the festival's many heralds of modern music, such as the drumless-yet-rhythmic Yonder Mountain String Band, and the furious fiddlin' of Darol Anger, the weekend features Kelly Joe Phelps doing some of the world's slipperiest slide guitar. See Saturday Calendar. Ben Fogelson

circus: When is the last time you saw a Globe of Death, much less someone on a motorcycle racing around in one? When have you seen a circus with a story unfolding before your eyes, told by a wizard who doubles as an artistic clown? When have you witnessed the ancient art of foot juggling, or four brave souls teeter atop the Wheel of Destiny? Never, that's when. But now is your chance. Circus Chimera, touring with its brand new spectacle, "Enchanted," boasts two hours of death-defying bravado, acts of ninja-like dexterity, and scenes of breathtaking beauty. Pooled from nine countries circling the globe, these magicians of movement have toured together for four years, honing their acts to razor-sharpness. Come, behold a teeterboarded human do a triple somersault to a four-man high pyramid. See July 4 On the Road. BF

3music: What seems to be a long, long time ago, my mother took me to the Hult Center to see a man who made music by beating on his chest, slapping his cheeks, and snapping his fingers. Overjoyed to see me enthusiastic about anything that didn't cost quarters, she bought me a cassette so that I could listen to the strange man make that fascinating music to my heart's content. Years later, when Bobby McFerrin came out with "Don't Worry, be Happy," I felt as if somehow someone had told a secret I thought only I was keeping. Still, that won't keep me from going to see McFerrin this weekend at the Oregon Bach Festival, where he's giving a vocal clinic to teachers and singers, in addition to a performance Saturday night. See Friday and Saturday Calendar. BF
