THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:

Particle
Do not adjust your eyeballs, this is really what the photo looks like. Particle,
jam band from LA, can't seem to stay still long enough to get their picture taken.
The group plays "slippery funk" this week at Taylor's. Sunday, Taylor's Bar & Grill. |

Nautical
Sauce Posse
Calling their sound a "progressive puree of funk, metal and fusion with pop
and jazz sensibilities, the Eugene sex-tet (that's six-piece for all you pervs) has
garnered comparisons to Mr. Bungle and Frank Zappa himself. Friday, Doc's Pad. |

Jon Auer
Posies frontman Auer is touring a solo album, 6 1/2"
a collection of covers from artists like Madonna and the Psychedelic Furs. Meanwhile,
the Posies can't decide if they're broken up or not and label the past three years
A.P.O.S.W.T. (After Posies, Or So We Thought). Sunday, John Henry's. |

Danny Barnes and
Thee Old Codgers do things right Friday at Sam Bond's.
. |
|
Get geared up for the busy week ahead by checking out the David
Nelson Band tonight (June 7) at the Wild Duck. The DNB has been hard at work
filling its treat bags with a hearty mix of improvisational country, blues and bluegrass.
In case you didn't know, Nelson was a founding member of New Riders of the Purple
Sage and an early architect of that "San Francisco Sound."
Let Here Comes Everybody be the soundtrack to your Friday
night at Café Paradiso. HCE's new CD, chock full of playfully realized popcraft,
will be available for a "sneak peak" at the show. The Underdogs
will appear also.
In its day, Austin's Bad Livers swung a wide lasso around the necks
of both punk and bluegrass, combining authenticity with audacity. The Livers toured
with the Butthole Surfers and could produce potently picked 'grass versions of any
punk tune on demand.
Alas, the legendary Bad Livers are no more, but lead Liver Danny
Barnes continues on. Ever prolific, his newest project has him playing along
with Thee Old Codgers (Zony Mash bassist Keith Lowe and violinist Jon Parry from
Goose Creek Symphony) on a CD entitled Things I Done Wrong. A central Texas
native, Barnes never leaves home without his vocal twang and hard luck stories.
As he gets older, Barnes seems less concerned about keeping his
idiosyncrasies hidden. There's no filter between what he thinks and what he writes.
This makes for heartfelt and sometimes hilarious lyrics that engage the listener
with a raw, rural sentiment. The Zeke shirt Barnes sports on the inside cover reveals
that bluegrass and punk songs aren't really that much of a departure from one another;
both generally adopt a disenfranchised aesthetic, and both frequently reach brisk
velocities. Catch his act Friday at Sam Bond's.
Friday's a big night in the city ... Catch Mickey and the Mojo
Hitmen at the River Road Grill. Who is Nautical Sauce Posse? Corvallis's
most mysteriously named band funks up the avant-jazzy jams a la Zappa or Mr. Bungle.
Find out more for yourself at Doc's. Floater begins the first of two nights
at the WOW Hall Friday with Portland's heavy melodic metal outfit DFive9,
and Saturday with King Black Acid, who will be debuting a new lineup and maybe
some brand new material.
Looking for something to do after Saturday Market? How about "Support
Your Local Musician?" This all-ages event takes place at the Bulb Ranch in Glenwood
beginning at 4 pm. The Ranch promises "too many local acts to list." Sounds
fun! I can't tell you who will be playing, but I can be sure that our own lovely
and talented Ms. Mare Wakefield will not be among the featured performers at the
Ranch, as she will have the Saturday stage all wrapped up at Sam Bond's.
Remember The Posies? They may or may not be defunct at this
point, but leadman Jon Auer is busy promoting his sweet solo efforts. His latest,
an E.P. of eclectic covers, is delightful pop, with just the right amount of toothiness.
The Posies perform Sunday at John Henry's. Opening act SushiRobo is fronted by another
former Posie, Rick Roberts.
Tuesday at The Duck is KKNU's Country Showdown, where local acts
will strut their stuff. Local swing and ska will prevail Wednesday, as Lounge
Derbies and Double-O-Seven take over the Duck stage.

Tom Bergeron (pictured)
and Whirled Jazz recently appeared at Theo's.

Whew. What's traditionally considered the music season has ended in
the usual flurry, leaving two major summer programs (Oregon Bach Festival and Oregon
Festival of American Music) and a host of smaller but still worthy performances until
the next season commences in September. We'll begin our Bach Festival coverage next
week, but this brief breather offers a chance to tell you about some appealing musical
events and venues generally attended by aficionados only -- but that ought to be
better known.
With a few notable and heroic exceptions, both the downtown mall
and the local jazz scene look pretty moribund. So it's great news that Theo's, the
mall's cozy coffeehouse, has been bringing some fine jazz downtown of late. It's
bad news that not enough people have showed up, so the venue is scheduled to close
at the end of July. But a good sized crowd (for such an intimate space) was there
when I caught Corvallis's terrific Whirled Jazz there on a recent Tuesday eve. The
group revels in the creative tension set up by the contrast among Keller Coker's
creamy, lyrical trombone, Tom Bergeron's agile alto sax, and the frisky yet unfussy
percolating rhythm section of bassist Page Hundemer and percussionist Dave Storrs.
Although these fine musicians possess enough chops to feed an offensive
line after a hunger strike, the music is less about virtuosity than texture, tunes,
and telepathy. The set touched on tango, calypso, steaming originals, even Eastern
European influences, and closed with a gentle ballad by Eugene's own Art Maddox.
If you want to fight the desolation that threatens the downtown mall and catch fine
music in a warm, intimate atmosphere, check out Theo's while you can.
The UO music school ends its season with a trio of cult favorites
-- shows that music scene veterans know usually provide a little oomph that goes
beyond just playing the notes. On Friday, June 8, jazz fans will flock to room 186
of the Music School for the Jazz Café, featuring various award-winning student
jazz combos. On Sunday afternoon, June 10, the University Percussion Ensemble presents
colorful contemporary modernist music by notable composer/percussionists William
Craft and Michael Colgrass. That evening, the University Gospel Ensemble, Gospel
Choir, and Gospel Singers will rock the UO's EMU Ballroom.
I caught a UO rising star, composer Elyzabeth Meade, in a wide-ranging
and well-attended concert of her music last week. As often happens, this recital
sought to demonstrate the composer's ability to write for a broad range of forces
-- choir, chamber ensemble, solo flute, etc. Most pieces boasted some lovely moments,
but also needed some editing, lasting longer than their attractive ideas could really
sustain. Nevertheless, Meade's vocal and choral works conjured evocative atmospheres
suitable to their text, while her delicious parody of operatic excess, a "Diva
Ditty," revealed that rarity among "classical" composers -- a sly
sense of humor. She's surely a composer with a bright future.
Like jazz buffs, chamber music fans constitute a rather marginal
audience these days. And they always drool in anticipation over the Oregon Mozart
Players Chamber Music and Chocolate Series, whose final installment of the season
takes places at 7:30 pm Tuesday, June 19 at First Christian Church, 1166 Oak. Although
this short, all-Mozart concert doesn't include the contemporary music featured in
some previous installments, it does boast two of Mozart's finest works for small
combos: his winsome Oboe Quartet and Piano Trio K. 502. Both teem with rich, unforgettable
tunes yet with a tinge of melancholy, sort of like the bittersweet chocolates served
to all after the show.
