visual arts: Disagree if you must, but for some of us Scooby Doo has always been a work of art. But UO's Department of Art has taken animation and multimedia design to a whole new level. Students from classes such as Motion Graphics, Multimedia Design and 3-D Animation show off their work this weekend in Animation Explosion in Lawrence Hall. UO has launched a new multimedia design program that already has 175 majors. The program melds the strengths of the visual design area with new ideas from the emerging digital communication industry. See Thursday, June 7 Calendar.

literary arts: Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club (made into a film by director David Fincher) recently published his latest novel, Choke, already on the New York Times' Best Seller List. Modest Thom Jones has said of the novel, "Even I can't write this well." The Portland author's second novel is about Victor Mancini, a dropout from medical school, who has devised a scam to pay for his mother's elder care: Pretend to be choking in a restaurant and the person who "saves you" will feel responsible. Multiply that a couple of hundred times and you generate a healthy flow of checks. Palahniuk reads from Choke at UO. See Thursday, June 14 Calendar and Books column.

3dance: The Dance Theatre of Oregon ends another successful season with Swine Dive #10. The popular Swine Dive Performance Series annually showcases choreographic work by local and regional dance artists. This year, the performance features everything from contact improvisation to Cuban-based social dance to contemporary ballet. Choreographers and performance artists on the bill include Zoe Hawkins-Wells, Wind Kim, Pamela Lehan-Siegel, Marc Siegel, Emily Fisk Russell and others. All Swine Dive artists stay on hand for a question and answer session following the show. See Friday Calendar.
