THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

  Gabriel Blue
Our hometown rockers have just released a "homegrown masterpiece" called Runaway Sun. The 15-cut album ranges from the comedic to the abstract to the ominous, and the four members all take part in the songwriting. The Messengers open.
Friday, WOW Hall.

  Crash Test Dummies
"Tarzan wasn't a ladies man," but how 'bout the baritone voice on that Crash Test Dummies lead singer Brad Roberts? Ooh la la. The Canadian roots rock band performs this week. Spooky fact: Roberts himself was in a car crash recently. Self-fulfilling prophecy? We're just glad he's okay.
Monday, Wild Duck.

  Don Latarski Trio
Jazz anyone? ThereÕs nothing finer than some hot jazz on a warm (almost) summer evening, and most Eugene jazz-heads would agree that Latarski is among the cream of the local crop. The trio performs two nights this weekend. Friday and Saturday, Oregon Electric Station.

Bad-ass Bassist
And Elvises, Gypsies and Dummies.
By Dave Gingold

Best of the bassists Wooten plays the Wild Duck Friday..
.

June 1st brings an evening with Victor Wooten to the Wild Duck. Superbassist Wooten is probably best known for his work in Bela Fleck's Flecktones, but also has three solo CDs to his credit, an instructional video with drummer Carter Beauford of the Dave Mathews Band, and plenty more, including running an annual bass and nature camp in Tennessee. He began playing bass at age 3, unbelievably, and has become shockingly proficient since. Wooten has been named Bass Player of the Year by Bass Player magazine three times, when no one else has won more than once. All you bottom-enders come and learn something at Victor's website (www.victorwooten.com), where he has compiled a bunch of words of wisdom, and offers some bass lessons as well.

Also on the 1st, the acoustic fusion trio Carmizin is at Cafe Paradiso, and modern rockers Gabriel Blue are at it at the WOW Hall, with The Messengers opening. June 2nd brings a benefit for Patterson Family School to Sam Bond's Garage, with The West Coast Rhythm Kings, Lennonite Choir, Chico Schwall and more. Peter Wilde has surrendered the booking at Chez Ray's and quickly turned up doing same at Sam Bond's Garage, where he put in almost three years of booking starting back in '95. Go forth and book fruitfully, Pete.

Them Red Elvises are back in town at the WOW Hall the 3rd, doing their fun live thing. These surf-infected Ruskie boys, now down to a trio, have put out two collections so far this year, Welcome to the Freakshow and Bedroom Boogie. Whoa, slow down, redmen. Yes, they're still goofballs, and with rather, um, earthy concerns, for the most part. Sometimes they venture spaceward, as in "Spacecowboy," where they float on out, apparently innocent of any knowledge of Steve Miller. The heavily accented English and sentiments like "Your life will be sweet like baklava" keep these boys in the left field of L.A. Welsh Rabbit opens the show.

Also on the 3rd, there will be a benefit for the Oregon Country Fair's Gypsy Caravan Stage, with plenty of dancing and music from the Bedouin Spice Orchestra at the Wild Duck.

June 4th brings our old friends The Crash Test Dummies to the Wild Duck, fronted by the gaping abyss-voiced Brad Roberts. Elise Coakley opens. Calexico will be at John Henry's the 5th. Powerful, atmospheric music that strongly evokes the band's name is to be found on "Sonic Wind" and throughout Even My Sure Things Fall Through, a collection of unreleased tracks, B-sides, remixes and CD ROM videos. This project centers around Tucson's Joey Burns and Jon Convertino, but it is a loose concept that involves many other musicians in their very southwestern (trumpets, vibes and vihuela)-feeling approach, which is a very good one. Some's a-singin', some's instrumental all good stuff that really gets under your skin.

Evren Göknar is at Sam Bond's the 6th. Göknar's latest CD is entitled Flux, and I actually went over and turned this one up. These are good rocking songs, strongly performed, and Göknar's production is skillful throughout, knowing just when a wheeze of organ will do the trick. Also on the 6th, the "Yallternative" of The Old 97s is at the WOW Hall.

Bumbershoot 2001, which will take place over Labor Day weekend in Seattle, has already lined up some fine acts, including Loretta Lynn, King Sunny Ade, The Black Crowes, and Malis Habib Koite.
