arts: These three claim to be Eugene's funniest writers/artists.
In doubt? Judge for yourself. Nationally syndicated cartoonist Jan Eliot has
just released a new book, Stone Soup the Comic Strip. The second Stone Soup
collection, You Can't Say Boobs on Sunday, was released last year. Humorist
Leigh Anne Jasheway writes columns for Readers' Digest New Choices,
Family Circle and Eugene's Comic News. Jasheway's latest book, Serious
Side Effects: The Best of Leigh Anne Jasheway from The Comic News, Vol. I features
"Don't Hate Me Because I'm Sober," "Fido Meet Plato" and "Roll
Over and Play President." Cartoonist Jesse Springer's book Only in
Eugene is a collection poking fun at our little town when it starts taking itself
too seriously. All three sign copies of their books at the Eugene Library. See Sunday Calendar. visual
arts: Eugene's used to an arty party on the First Friday
of each month. But this week The Lane Arts Council turns 25 and the party's going
to last all week. ArtsWeek will feature not one, but two ArtWalks, a Fifth
Street Arts Festival, art workshops at local galleries and a grand finale ArtsParty
on June 8. Shown here is fiberwork by Barbara Pickett showing at Robert Canaga Gallery.
See Friday Calendar. music:
Throughout the Cold War of the 1980s, America waited nervously
with fears of an invasion by the U.S.S.R. The Russians have finally landed and who
knew it would be this much fun? The Red Elvises from Siberia are now living
in the U.S. The colorful three-piece combines charisma, classical theatrical training
and a blend of Russian, ethnic, surf and rockabilly music. Since their last WOW Hall
show in November, the Elvises have released two CDs, Welcome to the Freak Show
and Bedroom Boogie. Welsh Rabbit, the local power pop band influenced by The
Beatles, Elvis Costello and Big Star among others, opens the show. See Sunday Calendar. |
