THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

  Vanessa Trein
Originally from New York, Trein now resides in Boston (are we seeing a trend develop here?). The singer-songwriter was selected from hundreds of applicants to perform with folk legend Tom Rush at a special October 2000 performance of "emerging singer/songwriters" at Harvard's Sanders Theatre, and is also a performing member of the nationwide collective, Indiegrrl. Thursday,
Cafe Paradiso.

  The Mary Janes
Fronted by ex-Vulgar Boatmen member, Janas Hoyt, The Mary Janes call Bloomington, Indiana home. In addition to touring with her duo, Hoyt can also be found all over fellow Indianan (is that a word?) John Mellencamp's latest album, Rough Harvest. Friday,
Sam Bond's.

  The Clumsy Lovers
This Canadian five-piece jumps for joy at the thought of getting to play their Òraging, Celtic-bluegrass-rockÓ for all of you. (Hey, they're the ones in the air.) Catch them this week at Taylors... get it? Catch them? Friday, Taylor's Bar and Grill.

More Than Folk
Annual fest offers eclectic lineup this year.
By Dave Gingold

Li'l Lynne and the Smokin' Souls brings blues to the Folk Fest on Saturday..
.

The big news this week is the Willamette Valley Folk Festival on the UO campus. Among its offerings will be Ian Moore, Epiphany Road, Li'l Lynne and the Smokin' Soles and Four Shillings Short. Received the Ian Moore Action Company Via Satellite CD, a collection of Texas guitarist/singer Moore and electric band live in Houston, and it is surprisingly grandiose '70s-esque guitar rock. I understand that Moore will be solo and acoustic in his festival set Friday, so this is of little help to you, I know.

Epiphany Road has recorded an Oregon song cycle written by Chip Kiger, entitled Santiam Sun Umpqua Moon. From the gorgeous CD liner photos of punchbowl falls, rocky sea coves, misty tarns and arid mesas, it's hard not to feel your chest swell with appreciation for our truly blessed state -- as they sing in "We've Come So Far," "like the best dream I've ever had." The lovely production and playing here fits the subject well, which ranges over the people of Oregon, as well as the landscape. They play Saturday on the Amphitheater stage.

Later on Saturday come ex-Eugeneans Li'l Lynne & the Smokin' Soles, doing their brand of the blues. If you haven't heard Soles guitarist Suburban Slim, you haven't heard the rippinest player in Oregon. Period.

The wife-and-husband duo of Aodh Og OTuama and Christy Martin, known as Four Shillings Short, generally run to British Isles music, but dig around in India and America too, with an angled approach to John Prines "Paradise," for instance on their latest CD, Dodging Lodging. They play the Festival Sunday.

The trio outta Hollywood known as Tamaras will be at Sam Bond's Garage the 17th, delivering "aggressive acoustic" music from their new CD Simple Is So Hard. They've been through town a couple of times, including Chez Ray's in February. The Mary Janes are at Sam Bond's the 18th, coming out from their home base of Bloomington, Ind. Indianapolan Janas Hoyt is the woman who writes and sings 'em here, delivering a vaguely Americana-style pop on the groups CD Flame. Hoyt appears on fellow Indianan John Mellencamp's latest CD Rough Harvest. Lost At Last is at the Wild Duck the 19th. They say they broke the on-site CD sales record at the Country Fair last year, taking the cup from String Cheese Incident.

You've heard me rave time and again about Martin Sexton, and, dammit, I'm not going to get myself all worked up again about him. Suffice it to say that if you miss his show the 22nd at the WOW Hall, you're an idiot.

Fernell Lopez has been bringing Latin music to this area for a number of years, through the groups Caliente and Sandunga and the sextet Lo Nuestro. Lo Nuestro has a new CD collection Andando Y Bailando, some of which was recorded live at the WOW Hall a few years ago. This is quite an impressive sampler, ranging from Andean pan flute to music from Venezuela, Cuba and Mexico. A very well played and driving group of songs. The sextet plays the evening of the 18th at LCC's Performance Hall, in a benefit for LCC's Latino Student Union and Arts In Education.

Fans of the Cowboy Junkies should take note and gas up, as the Junkies will be making a free in-store appearance at the Music Millenium in northwest Portland on the 24th. They'll be promoting their new CD Open. Go, and enjoy.

Danged and Dee Dee
Few but worthwhile loud shows this week.
By Chris Wriston

Dee Dee Ramone headlines the KWVA B-Day Bash at Hollywood Taxi Thursday the 17th.
.

Quality, not quantity is the watchword for the loud music lover this week, with a temporary lull in the number of shows heading our way. But that's not to say that you should warm up those VCRs and flop down on that recliner just yet. And hey you, YEAH YOU, quit putting along the Disinformation Stuporhighway and go outside! Remember outside? It's that big place with all the other people, and it doesn't smell like dirty clothes quite so much.

This Thursday the 17th, Dee Dee Ramone is at the Hollywood Taxi (Main Street, Springfield), along with the Wristrockets, local evildoers the Snukas, and the City Girls' Boys. Dee Dee is best known for being the original bass player and co-songwriter for The Ramones. He played on 14 of their albums, but has also recorded with the Dead Boys, Johnny Thunders, Furious George, and has a somewhat infamous rap album as Dee Dee King in addition to several rock solo albums. The Wristrockets' singer/guitar guy Scott VonRockets' unswerving dedication to The Ramones as the greatest band of all time makes this band an appropriate opener.

Another local band, four-member The Snukas, was named for the great Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, a notorious wrestler in the '70s and a true madman who required eight policemen to drag him off to prison after a shooting incident. The band likewise rocks. The City Girls' Boys, described by one shadowy insider as "glam-punk," is touring with Dee Dee and will be rounding out the show, which celebrates 88.1 FM, KWVA's 8th birthday.

The Danged will be performing every Tuesday night at The Downtown Lounge (959 Pearl St.). Expect a nasty, untamed blast of beer and booze-soaked bluesrock from these fellas: John Pankl (ex-Asthma Hounds) slinging the strings and busting a lung, David Clark (Los Mex Pistols) holding down the bass side of things with panache, and man of mystery Derrik Trost punishing the skins like they've done him wrong one too many times. The Danged careens from great originals to stripped-down versions of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan tunes, and watching John rock out is a whole education in showmanship each time.
