![]() This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Kids Calendar dance:Eugene's Phoenix Dance Company premieres Wolf Dances at the WOW Hall this weekend. Performed in four parts, Wolf Dances celebrates the historical, cultural and ecological importance of wolves. In 1973, wolves were given complete protection under the Endangered Species Act. However, as the wolf population has increased through reintroduction to places such as Yellowstone National Park, the much maligned and misunderstood wolf is losing protection and once again faces threat of the gun and the trap. With music by contemporary Native American artists Carlos Nakai and Bill Miller, haunting rhythms inform the movements of a fluid tale told by dance. Wolf Dances is a collaborative project by choreographer Nanci McChesney-Henry, with pieces by company members Wind Kim, Sarah Palmer and special guest Black Beaver of the Nez Perce tribe. See Friday Calendar. -- Debra Merskin literary
arts :Three artists working in collaboration for two years have created a magical book that opens like an accordion to reveal 10 feet of healing text and vivid imagery. Award-winning author Kim Stafford, son of William Stafford, wrote Oregon Pilgrimage in Green: A Forest Journal for My Brother to describe a journey Stafford and his brother took through the forests, rivers and mountains of Oregon. Portland artist Margot Voorhies Thompson engraved the artwork. Sandy Tilcock at The Knight Library Press printed and hand-bound the work, bringing it all together. The artists present their work next week at the Knight Library. See Monday Calendar. music:When Frank Black (known as Black Francis at the time) left the Pixies in 1992, he broke many a punk rocker's heart. Fortunately, Black and his fans have recovered. After some shaky solo time, Black formed his own band, Frank Black and The Catholics, in 1997. For a guy who's famous for his "Do I look like I care about my image?" image, Black has been working pretty hard. He and the band have been touring almost nonstop in support of their third album, Dog in the Sand, which The Onion calls The Catholics' best album yet. Scientific Experimentalist David Lovering opens. See Wednesday Calendar. |
