THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:

J. Mascis
& the Fog
J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. fame brings his band The Fog to the WOW Hall in support
of their new album More Light. The Fog is an all-star lineup featuring bassist Mike
Watt from the Minutemen and fIREHOSE, ex-Stooges guitarist/bassist Ron Ashton, and
George Berz of Dinosaur Jr. on drums. Love as Laughter opens the show. Tuesday, WOW Hall. |
 |
|
Nina Hynes
Dublin-born Nina Hynes started her career by dropping out of Trinity College and
moving to a weather-torn and remote part of Northern Ireland for two years. Nothin'
like solitude for inspiration. Now she's earning comparisons to Mazzy Star and The
Sundays. Saturday, Cafe Paradiso. |

Porterhouse
This Portland four-piece was started by keyboardist Joey
Porter from Rubberneck and Five Fingers of Funk. Porter and his buds play tunes that
are "funky enough for dancers and cerebral enough for jazz enthusiasts."

Minimalism
Evolves
Steve Reich in Portland;
Darol Anger, Chick Corea in Eugene.
By Brett
Campbell
New York composer Steve Reich made his reputation in the 1960s
as a co-creator of so-called minimalism -- the use of repeated, slowly varied musical
patterns. He subsequently incorporated techniques of medieval, Balinese, Hebrew and
African music, explored new ways of combining audio and video recordings with concert
music, and found a popular audience for his pulsating, path-breaking music. On Sunday,
May 6, Reich, the world's most important active composer, comes to Portland's Center
for the Performing Arts to introduce a concert of his works by the acclaimed new
music ensemble, Third Angle.
The show opens with Proverb, a lovely piece for voices,
keyboards and percussion that should appeal to early music fans. Next comes the Grammy-winning
Different Trains, an innovative integration of tape loops (including voices
of Holocaust survivors) and string quartet that remains one of the most fascinating
and moving combinations of words and music ever devised. The concert climaxes with
perhaps Reich's greatest composition, Music for 18 Musicians.
I saw Reich and his ensemble weave this spell-binding tapestry
of melody in San Francisco last summer, and it remains one of the transcendent musical
experiences of my life. Seeing, as well as hearing, the patterns performed adds a
dimension to one of the absolute landmarks of 20th century music.
On Friday, April 27, the WOW Hall finds vivacious violinist Darol
Anger (of Turtle Island String Quartet, Montreux, et al) appearing with longtime
collaborator Mike Marshall in their genre-bending blend of jazz, bluegrass
and other American music. The same evening, Marin Alsop returns to conduct
the Eugene Symphony in Richard Einhorn's contemporary score to the silent
film classic, The Passion of Joan of Arc.
That's only one of several attractive classical music shows coming
up. The following evening, the Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble presents a fascinating
program at Central Presbyterian Church. It features Renaissance madrigals by Monteverdi,
Morley and others, as well as contemporary works by Portland native Morton Lauridson,
including Gyorgi Ligeti's magnificent "Lux Aeterna" (used in 2001: A
Space Odyssey).
On April 29, Chick Corea brings his trio to the WOW Hall.
Miles Davis, one of music's sharpest talent spotters, recognized Corea's talent and
brought him into his band in the late 1960s -- despite the presence of other keyboard
legends (Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Keith Jarrett) during his tenure. After leaving
Davis to form the free-jazz Circle, the fusoid Return to Forever and his Elektric
and Akoustic bands, Corea wallowed in years of mannered noodling; but now seems to
be finding his way back to playing substantial jazz.
On Friday, May 4, James Miller, who founded the Eugene Chamber
Singers in 1979, steps out of retirement to conduct the group in a concert of
European and American folk songs at Central Lutheran Church. And on May 5 and 6,
the Oregon Mozart Players bring to the Soreng Theater and Beall Hall a stirring
Haydn symphony that's neither sturm nor drang, London nor Paris, as well as Beethoven's
second (actually first) piano concerto. OMP will also perform a serenely beautiful
piece that, because of its unusual instrumental lineup (harp, flute, clarinet and
string quartet), we get to hear too seldom: Ravel's enchanting "Introduction
and Allegro." Music director Andrew Massey showed his ability to capture Ravel's
magic in the composer's Mother Goose suite a couple of years ago, so this should
be a good one.

Brian and Chris.
. |
|
This Thursday why not visit Cafe Paradiso for an unplugged
performance by Jamie Rust and Ed Cole? Rust is a talented songwriter
and he lives up to his CD's name, Chameleon, exhibiting an easy shift between
many different styles of playing. Rust's performances are all acoustic, and in my
opinion, that's where his impassioned delivery is best used. Ed Cole is one third
of Eugene's ever-popular Naysayers, and together they should be fab.
Tuesday's WOW Hall show features indie-rock legend J. Mascis
leading his band, The Fog. Mascis's previous band, Dinosaur Jr., introduced
guitar solos to the indie-rock world, defining guitar-driven slacker rock for a new
generation. Performing with Mascis will be Minuteman and fIREHOSE bassist
MikeWatt, Dinosaur Jr. drummer George Berz and ex-Stooges guitarist/bassist Ron Asheton.
Opening will be Love As Laughter.
John Henry's promises a little something for everyone on Saturday.
Opening is San Francisco's Brian and Chris. Starting out as a duo who
was asked to score a friend's movie, Brian Fraser and Chris Palmatier later joined
up with two other musicians to take their project on the road.
Brian and Chris has managed to extract the best of the "Chicago
sound" aesthetic in a way that doesn't come across as earnest as some established
acts. The 11 tracks on their mostly instrumental self-titled debut CD comprise a
sweeping, yet not grandiose, vision. While the CD does at times beg comparison to
Tortoise or Gastr del Sol, the similarities never feel forced or hackneyed. The pair
explores divergent landscapes throughout, with the presence of electric guitars on
each track being perhaps the only common thread. The CD surges through guitar-driven
otherworldliness, a minor saxophone frenzy, buzzing guitars and cool electronic noises
(but not too many). Brightening the mix are adventurous percussive qualities and
gamelan-inspired percolations. Throughout are trippy loops and samples that never
grow cold or hurried.

Rock and Roll Soldiers.
. |
|
Occupying the middle slot will be Spark Plug San Jay. Without
having any press material to go with the CD, I can only say the band is from New
Jersey and appears to be a three-piece. The rock reminds me of the late band Jejune.
The guitars sparkle and drift. The drums are equally soft and propulsive. It's less
intimate than Built to Spill, and not quite as melodic, but not as edgy as some of
the new breed of indie-rock bands, such as Adelaide.
Closing out the night's festivities will be local act Rock and
Roll Soldiers. How many 17-year-old kids do you know these days that know about
the MC5? How about Radio Birdman? And not just know, but are thoroughly familiar
with the Stooges? This band is, and the foursome has made it a mission to spread
its gospel. Although Soldiers calls what it does "just rock and roll,"
one gander at the group's amazingly energetic and enthusiastic stage presence will
assure you that it's rock and roll and then some. These guys started with such garage
band touchstones as Teengenerate and The Devil Dogs, which set them on the inevitable
path toward a big, aggressive Detroit sound that overflows in their music.
