![]() This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Kids Calendar music:Chick Corea has been acknowledged as one of the greatest pianists in the history of jazz. In the 1960s his groundbreaking performances with Miles Davis created the earliest fusion of rock and jazz. Now his trio, including bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Jeff Ballard, continues to chart new territory with open-structured combinations of Latin and bebop. The three are promoting the album Past, Present & Futures, which was released this month. See Sunday Calendar. comedy:After a successful run on "Saturday Night Live" as anchor of the "fake news" and Bob Dole impersonator, comedian Norm MacDonald debuted on ABC as star of his own sitcom, "Norm." MacDonald has had featured roles in the films Man on the Moon, Billy Madison and Dirty Work. See Friday Calendar. music:Marin Alsop, Conductor Laureate of the Eugene Symphony, returns to direct 140 performers in a production inspired by the life and legend of Joan of Arc. Solo voices, the chorus and orchestra will perform Richard Einhorn's score made for Carl Dreyer's 1928 silent film, The Passion of Joan of Arc. Dreyer's film is considered a masterpiece. For years it was thought to have been destroyed in a warehouse fire until a perfect copy was discovered. In 1995 Einhorn released his score, Voices of Light, a combination of visions, fantasies and reflections drawn from the writings of medieval female mystics and letters dictated by Joan herself. The Eugene Symphony performs Voices of Light/The Passion of Joan of Arc at the Hult this weekend. See Friday Calendar. |
