Karl Denson, the
"jazz kid on a groove trip," plays the EMU Wednesday.
. |
|
Calling all jazz-heads, groove mongers and anyone else who
wants to shake their booty: Karl Denson's Tiny Universe is coming to town
to play material from the new album, Dance Lesson #2.
Denson, who plays saxophone and flute, recorded and toured with
pop star Lenny Kravitz for much of the early '90s, and then went on to form the funk/jazz/fusion
band The Greyboy Allstars, which disbanded in 1998.
From there Denson formed the Tiny Universe and has been keeping
the funky jazz grooves rolling out ever since. Denson grew up listening to John Coltrane
and Fathead Newman. "I've always worked on developing a jazz hybrid with soul
and funk influences, not a rock hybrid that uses jazz influences. That's a big difference.
I'm definitely a jazz kid on a groove trip," he says.
The new album is testament to that. Sounding like a hybrid of James
Brown and Medeski, Martin and Wood, Dance Lesson #2 is sure to turn even the
squarest of listeners into a gyrating, sweaty, dancing fool. DJ Logic appears on
the album, as does Chris Wood from the aforementioned MMW. (Although neither are
currently on tour with Denson, Wood will be making a special guest appearance at
the EMU show).
Dance Lesson is a great listen, but it won't be available
at the show. Its release date is May 8, so you'll have to wait. But if you'd like
to hear a preview, or if you'd just like to get a little funky, check out the show
at 7:30 pm, Wednesday, April 11 at the EMU Ballroom. $21 general public, $18 UO students.
If something mellower is closer to your cup of tea, check out Over
the Rhine, performing tonight, April 5, at Gutenberg College. After listening
to the album, it seems a misnomer to call the group a songwriting duo as its press
material claims. The material is so edgy it takes you beyond singer/songwriter land
and drops you off somewhere in the angsty, female-lead rock of Concrete Blonde or
Tori Amos.
Over the Rhine is led by a husband and wife team from Ohio who
have been at the business of making music for more than a decade. They've recently
enjoyed some moderate success touring with the Cowboy Junkies (vocalist Karin Bergquist
is oft compared to the Cowboy Junkies lead vocalist Margo Timmons).
In addition to Bergquist, OTR is Linford Detweiler, who plays bass
and keyboards and wrote the lyrics and music for most of the songs on the recently
released Films For Radio. The live show will also include a back-up band.
Gutenberg College, a venue I've never heard of before, is a small
liberal arts college located at 1883 University Street with a current student body
of 12. The school recently began sponsoring concerts, and offers a "house-concert
atmosphere" with room for about 80 people. The show starts at 7:30 pm. $12 adv.,
$15 dos. 543-8447.
Other noteworthy music this week includes Holly Figueroa,
a Seattle-based singer-songwriter who is also the founder of Indiegrrl, the rapidly
growing collective that helps independent female artists with booking, touring and
promotion. Figueroa plays a Jonatha Brooke-ish mixture of intricate guitar and flowing
lyrics that's got some gutsy blues thrown in for good measure. My favorite press
quote from her website is "... Bonnie Raitt had Dave Matthews' baby, and Robert
Johnson slapped her on the ass." Figueroa plays tonight, April 5, at Café
Paradiso in the round w/ fellow indiegrrls Eileen Hemphill-Haley and yours truly.
Show starts at 8:30 pm, $3 at the door.
And speaking of Jonatha Brooke, she's performing with
Elise Coakley on Friday at WOW Hall. The accomplished singer-songwriter usually
plays to a sell-out crowd, so call today for tix. $18 adv., $20 dos.
