![]() This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Kids Calendar music:Ever wonder who the genius was behind the beer jingle, "This Bud's for You" and the theme song to "Mr. Belevedere"? You'll have a chance to thank the man behind the glasses, Leon Redbone, who brings his act to the WOW Hall this week. Over the course of his 25-year, 10-album career, Redbone's act has gravitated between vaudeville and performance art. His career took a big step forward when Redbone performed "Walkin' Stick" on "Saturday Night Live" in 1976. Since then, he's been a guest of Johnny Carson several times and has toured the globe playing college campuses and royal halls alike. Redbone says, "Without a doubt, critics first thought of me as a novelty act, but if you stick around long enough they actually take you seriously -- not that they want to, or ever intended to in the first place." arts:Poets, music, glass blowing and goodwill abound at this month's First Friday Art Walk. The tour starts off with a pre-Walk celebration in downtown. Peace in the Heart, Peace in the Home, a student art contest to raise awareness of National Prevention of Child Abuse Month, shows while Director Debbie Diedrich leads The Lorane Folk Choir in a performance. The Walk features glass blowing demonstrations by Eugene Glass School at ScanDesign and an exclusive poetry reading by poet/artist Austin Straus. Other shows opening this Friday include photography by Susie Morrill at PhotoZone Gallery. Shown here is Trine, taken in County Galway, Ireland. See Friday Calendar. lecture:He's been accused of being blunt, abrasive and even egotistical, but Spike Lee has also been praised as one of the best filmmakers of our time. Lee grew up in Brooklyn, the son of an accomplished jazz bassist and an art teacher, to become the maker of controversy-courting films with important messages such as Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever, Summer of Sam and Malcolm X. The UO Cultural Forum sponsors the Spike Lee Film Festival throughout the week featuring several of Lee's best films. The highlight of the festival is a live appearance by Lee who will discuss his experiences as a black filmmaker and the challenges he faced in making several of his films.
