THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:
 |

Skye
EugeneÕs premier Celtic music quartet has been playing the WOW Hall on St. PatrickÕs
Day for the past ten years. Skye is known for gorgeous harmonies and rousing instrumentals,
and has two records out in case you want to take the show home with you. Saturday, WOW Hall. |
 |
|
Phillip
Walker
HeÕs the archetypal bluesman. Born the son of poor sharecroppers, Walker was raised
in the sticky heat of Louisiana and Texas. He made his first guitar out of a cigar
box and started sneaking into clubs to play the blues when he was 15. On the road
for the past 50 years, Walker plays zydeco, Texas blues, R&B and jazz, and is
a 2nd cousin to Clarence ÒGatemouthÓ Brown.
Tuesday, Hollywood Taxi . |

Hostile
Omish
Looking like a Lancaster County police line-up, the Hostile
Omish (yeah, thatÕs how they spell it) are billed as AmericaÕs genuine barn-core
band. You can expect a show of raucous, foul-mouthed punk rock and songs from their
new album, Olde Order of Omish. Saturday,
John HenryÕs. |

With all the big names coming through town, sometimes some
of our fine local music talents get lost in the shuffle. Case in point: Tuesday,
March 20, presents us an agonizing choice: David Lindley and the Big Easy's
Dirty Dozen Brass Band at WOW Hall? Scotland's fabulous folkies, the Battlefield
Band, at North Eugene High? You certainly can't go wrong with either.
But that same evening, the Oregon Mozart Players presents
its annual Chamber Music & Chocolate concert at First Christian Church (11th
and Oak). The show stars the Arrieu Wind Quintet, a group of Oregon State
University music faculty members who play in the Eugene Symphony, Mozart Players
and other aggregations.
They'll perform attractive works by the Argentine tango master
Astor Piazzolla, Francis Poulenc (his exuberant Sextet, one of the masterpieces
of 20th century chamber music), and more. Commendably, these intimate concerts feature
contemporary music -- often by composers from this region 4 that's both interesting
and extremely accessible.
This concert boasts a charming new piece composed and narrated
by UO grad student Rebecca Oswald, a setting of several of Aesop's fables that should
appeal to fans of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. Various wind instruments
(clarinet, oboe, bassoon, horn, flute) portray the tortoise and the hare, the ant
and the grasshopper, and other characters. Treats from Palace Bakery provide an encore.
Some other local luminaries join together this Friday at the Hult
Center's Soreng Theatre in "Music for the Globe," a benefit for In Harmony,
a Corvallis service agency that helps children make the transition from foster care
to adoptive homes. The concert is spearheaded by songwriter-guitarist Justin King
and also features estimable fretmaster Don Latarski and the colorful dance
group Chico Flamenco. The highlight will be Imbizo, a 10-member group
from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, whose Zulu dance and a cappella singing have drawn raves
around the world and may remind listeners of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Fans of guitar
and world music shouldn't miss this one.
If all this local talent isn't enough for you, check out a couple
of good shows happening in Portland. For those of you who loved the zany Quartetto
Gelato in their Bach Festival appearances and can't wait for the next one, you
can see them at Reed College on, appropriately, April Fool's Day, (503) 725-3307.
And on March 23, the northwest's premier new music ensemble, Third Angle,
presents John Adams' delightful "John's Book of Alleged Dances," written
for the Kronos Quartet, along with an atmospheric piece by the great Japanese composer
Somei Satoh (503/228-1353).
It's great to see live music, especially by local artists, in dance
performances 4 an all-too-rare occurrence these days. Curtis Salgado's live blues
amped up Toni Pimble's The Bluesman last week. And one of Oregon's finest
composers, Eugene's own Jeff Defty, composed and played (on cello and recorder) music
for LCC choreographer Bonnie Simoa's stunning dance-theater work, Amazing Grace
last month. Defty's score effectively captured the varying moods of the segments
it accompanied.
The performance also featured LCC faculty members Barbara Myrick
on piano and dancer Mary Seereiter -- both of whose struggles with breast cancer
play prominent roles in the work. Despite the intensely personal, even autobiographical
nature of the piece, it managed to avoid bathos or sentimentality, approaching a
deadly serious subject with humor and striking imagery, film, music and words. Not
every segment worked, but those that did -- especially the culminating "Artemis,"
featuring Defty's electronic score and imagery at once obvious and utterly right
-- added up to one of the most powerful collaborations among Eugene artists I've
yet encountered. Congrats to Simoa and her colleagues for an important statement,
and an often deeply moving experience.

It's a Celtic jam
with The Nettles on Saturday at Sam
Bond's.

It's time to get out your "Kiss Me I'm Irish" T-shirts and
start getting your liver in shape for upcoming St. Patrick's Day festivities March
17. There's a bit of everything to choose from on the big day. If you want to get
started a little early, check out 3 Leg Torso at Sam Bond's on Friday. 3 Leg
Torso gracefully combines gypsy-flavored influence along with a "chamber aesthetic"
thanks to the beautiful cello and cool, sophisticated tangos. Torso's unconventional
instrumentals are playful yet haunting, and fans of Eugene's own Mood Area 52 will
find 3 Leg Torso equally impressive.
The Nettles energize the Sam Bond's stage Saturday. Its
vigorous Celtic jams "blend the power of traditional Irish and American music
with improvisational spices of rock, jazz and blues."
For those of you who have been here a while it won't be hard to
predict who's at the WOW Hall Saturday. That's right, for the 11th year in a row
it's Skye. This foursome offers a rousing and inspirational blend of traditionals
and original compositions. The show will feature songs from the band's upcoming CD.
Chico Schwall and Friends opens with multi-instrumental versions of traditional
Irish, English and Welsh songs.
Do the Amish celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Maybe they do if they're
Hostile Omish. This group's been churning out (no pun intended, more about
that later) "barncore" since 1988. Yes, they do crack lots of Amish jokes.
Yes, they do wear overalls. Can a butter churn be a musical accompaniment? Find out
for yourselves as the punk rock Omish buggy rolls on through at John Henry's Saturday.
Think of a more hardcore Dead Milkmen, and leave your politically correct sensibilities
at home. Also appearing will be locals Shortround and The Snukas.
If your Guinness goes down better with reggae, visit Taylor's Saturday
for a set by Norma Fraser. Now a Eugene resident, Ms. Fraser scored a big
early reggae hit with "The First Cut is the Deepest." She doesn't perform
very much these days, but her voice is just as magical now as it was then.
The Groove Merchants sell their "part Phish, part Dead,
all groovy" jam Saturday night at Rascal's.
On March 20, Scotland's Battlefield Band brings its diverse
repertoire of exuberant Celtic music to the North Eugene High School auditorium.
The Battlefield Band members have been pre-eminent Scottish folk music revivalists
for the last 30 years, and their enduring popularity is a testament to the vibrant
and warm mix of traditional and original tunes proudly reflecting their heritage.
The band enlivens its set with many traditional instruments, including cittern, bodhran
and of course, bagpipes. The latest release, Happy Daze, just came out Feb.
27.
Here's a quick run down of some acts appearing this week who deserve
far more space than I can give them: Singer/songwriter Chris DiCroce performs
March 15 at the Wild Duck. The Hot Town Jubilee brings its '30s New York jazz
sound" to Sam Bond's the 15th. Hard rocking Floater is at WOW Hall Friday
and Wild Duck Saturday. Jazz cellist Erik Friedlander appears at Sam Bond's
Tuesday. Eugene's premier funny-man Ty Connor performs at Sam Bond's Sunday,
while Latin Jazz pianist Ruben Gutierrez performs at WOW the same night. David
Lindley and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band heat up WOW Hall Tuesday. This
just in: Diablo's dance club is scheduled to reopen March 29!
